The New York Giants are hoping Malik Nabers is ready for Week 1, but his recovery from last season’s injury remains one of the biggest storylines heading into training camp. While everyone wants to see him back on the field as soon as possible, it’s fair to ask an important question: Can the New York Giants win without Malik Nabers if he misses the start of the season?

That was the topic of discussion on a recent Bleed Big Blue Podcast, where we debated whether the Giants have enough talent at wide receiver to remain competitive if their biggest offensive weapon isn’t available.

The Giants Are Better Equipped Than They Were Last Year

Last season, when Nabers went down with his injury, the Giants simply didn’t have enough proven playmakers at wide receiver. The offense struggled to replace his production, and the team was already dealing with a difficult season.

This offseason, however, the front office made improving the supporting cast a priority.

The current wide receiver room includes:

• Odell Beckham Jr.
• Darnell Mooney
• Darius Slayton
• Calvin Austin
• Malachi Fields

No one player can replace what Malik Nabers brings to the offense. He’s the receiver opposing defenses game plan around and the player capable of changing a game with one touch.

What this group does provide, though, is significantly more depth than the Giants had a year ago.

Who Needs to Step Up?

If Nabers misses time, everyone in the receiving room becomes more important.

Veterans like Odell Beckham Jr., Darnell Mooney, and Darius Slayton have all proven they can make plays in the NFL. Calvin Austin adds game-breaking speed, while rookie Malachi Fields has an opportunity to carve out a role early in his career if he’s ready.

The Giants don’t need one receiver to become Malik Nabers.

They need several players to elevate their games and make meaningful contributions until their star receiver returns.

Winning Without Nabers Will Take a Team Effort

Wide receiver depth is only part of the equation.

If Malik Nabers isn’t on the field, the Giants will likely lean even more on their running game to keep the offense balanced. Sustaining drives, protecting the football, and playing complementary football become even more important.

The offense won’t be asked to replace Nabers with one player. Instead, it will require contributions from the entire roster, including the receivers, running backs, tight ends, offensive line, and quarterback.

That’s where the improved depth could make all the difference.

The Bottom Line

The New York Giants are unquestionably a better football team with Malik Nabers on the field. He’s one of the NFL’s most dynamic young playmakers and the focal point of the passing attack.

But if his recovery causes him to miss games early in the season, this roster is better prepared than it was a year ago. The additions of Odell Beckham Jr., Darnell Mooney, along with the continued development of Darius Slayton, Calvin Austin, and rookie Malachi Fields, give the Giants more legitimate options than they had last season.

Can the New York Giants win without Malik Nabers?

While much of the attention will be on Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and first-round rookie Arvell Reese, Alexander’s development in his second NFL season may determine just how high this defense can climb.

The Giants don’t need Alexander to become a Pro Bowler overnight. The first step is earning an every-game starting role. If he can establish himself as a reliable starter and consistently stop the run, everything else becomes a bonus. Any interior pass rush or sacks he adds would simply make an already talented defensive front even more dangerous.

The First Step Is Becoming a Full-Time Starter

The Giants know what they’re getting from veterans DJ Reader and Shelby Harris. Both are proven run defenders who bring experience, toughness, and leadership to the defensive line.

Darius Alexander is the player with the most room to grow.

His first objective isn’t piling up sacks. It’s becoming an every-game starter who can consistently hold the point of attack, occupy blockers, and help shut down the run. If he accomplishes that, the Giants will have another dependable piece in the middle of their defense.

Anything he provides as an interior pass rusher would be icing on the cake.

A Strong Interior Helps Everyone

One reason the Giants are excited about this defense is the talent they’ve assembled at every level.

On the edge, Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, and Kayvon Thibodeaux have the ability to consistently pressure quarterbacks. Behind them, first-round rookie Arvell Reese brings speed, athleticism, and the potential to become an impact player early in his career.

But none of those players can reach their full potential if the defensive line struggles against the run.

If Alexander develops into a dependable run-stuffing defensive tackle, he’ll keep offensive linemen from climbing to the second level, allowing Reese and the rest of the linebackers to play fast and attack the football. At the same time, a stronger interior presence can create cleaner pass-rushing opportunities for Burns, Carter, and Thibodeaux on the outside.

That’s why Alexander’s development could have a ripple effect throughout the entire defense.

Why Darius Alexander Is the X-Factor

The expectations for Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, and Kayvon Thibodeaux are already well established. The Giants know those players are expected to create pressure and make game-changing plays.

The bigger question is whether Darius Alexander can make the leap from a promising young defensive tackle into a dependable every-game starter.

If he does, the Giants become much tougher to run against while creating more opportunities for the stars around him. That’s the type of impact that doesn’t always show up in the stat sheet, but it wins football games.

The Giants don’t need Alexander to replace anyone or become the face of the defense. They simply need him to take the next step in his development and become a reliable presence on the interior.

Why This Matters for the Giants Defense

Championship-caliber defenses are built from the inside out.

The Giants appear to have the edge rushers to consistently pressure opposing quarterbacks. They have athletic linebackers, led by Arvell Reese, who can fly to the football. They also have experienced veterans like DJ Reader and Shelby Harris to help stabilize the defensive line.

Now they need a young player like Darius Alexander to emerge.

If he establishes himself as a quality starter and becomes a force against the run, the entire defense benefits. Offensive linemen stay occupied, linebackers stay clean, and edge rushers get more one-on-one opportunities.

Those are the types of contributions that often go unnoticed, but they’re exactly what can elevate a good defense into one of the better units in the NFC.

Final Thoughts

Darius Alexander doesn’t need a double-digit sack season to justify the confidence the Giants have in him.

His path to becoming one of the team’s most valuable defenders starts with earning a full-time starting role and becoming a consistent run defender. If he accomplishes that, he’ll make life easier for Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Arvell Reese, and the rest of the defense.

There’s No Replacing Dexter Lawrence for the New York Giants, and the front office knows it. After trading one of the NFL’s premier defensive tackles to the Cincinnati Bengals for the No. 10 overall pick, which became offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa, the Giants didn’t chase another superstar. Instead, they built a deeper defensive line, hoping a combination of veterans and young talent can collectively replace what Lawrence brought to the defense.

Nobody Can Replace What Dexter Lawrence Brought

Let’s be honest, players like Dexter Lawrence don’t become available every offseason. His ability to dominate against the run while collapsing the pocket made him one of the league’s most complete defensive tackles. Expecting one player to replace that level of production simply isn’t realistic.

That’s why I don’t view the signing of DJ Reader as an attempt to replace Lawrence. Reader is a different type of player, one who has built his reputation as one of the NFL’s better run-stuffing nose tackles. His job is to anchor the middle, occupy blockers, and allow the rest of the defense to make plays.

The Giants Showed Patience in Free Agency

One thing that impressed me this offseason was the Giants’ patience. Rather than forcing a move early in free agency, they addressed several other needs before waiting for the defensive tackle market to come to them. That patience allowed them to sign DJ Reader, giving them an experienced veteran without sacrificing resources needed to improve other areas of the roster.

Sometimes the best move isn’t the biggest move.

Training Camp Will Feature an Interesting Battle

The Giants appear set to rely on a rotation rather than one dominant defensive tackle. Veterans DJ Reader and Shelby Harris are the two most accomplished players in the room and will likely compete for starting snaps heading into training camp.

The biggest wildcard is second-year defensive tackle Darius Alexander. His rookie season wasn’t what many Giants fans hoped to see, although it’s fair to wonder how much last year’s coaching staff played a role in his slow development. Under new defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson, the Giants are hoping Alexander takes a significant step forward in Year 2. If he can become a disruptive interior defender, it would go a long way toward strengthening this defensive line.

Behind them, Leki Fotu, Zacch Pickens, Josh Tupou, and C.J. Ravenell will battle for rotational roles and roster spots. That depth should create healthy competition throughout training camp while giving Wilson plenty of options along the defensive front.

A Committee Could Be the Right Formula

Replacing an All-Pro isn’t about finding another All-Pro. It’s about building a group that complements one another.

Reader brings size and physicality against the run. Harris offers veteran leadership and versatility. Alexander provides upside if he develops under the new coaching staff. The remaining depth pieces give the Giants flexibility to rotate fresh bodies throughout the game.

That committee approach may not produce another Dexter Lawrence, but it could produce a more balanced and sustainable defensive tackle rotation.

Final Thoughts

There was never going to be a one-for-one replacement for Dexter Lawrence. The Giants understood that from the moment they made the trade.

Instead of searching for the next Dexter Lawrence, they invested in depth, experience, and competition. DJ Reader, Shelby Harris, and Darius Alexander now headline a defensive tackle room that will be counted on to stop the run, free up the linebackers, and generate enough production by committee.

No one player can replace what Lawrence meant to the Giants’ defense. But if this group plays to its potential under Dennard Wilson, they may prove that replacing one superstar with several complementary pieces was the right decision all along.

Why Najee Harris Makes Sense for the New York Giants in 2026 was one of the topics we discussed on a recent episode of the Bleed Big Blue Podcast. While there have been no reports linking the veteran running back to New York, his name came up because of how well his playing style fits what John Harbaugh has historically wanted from his backfield.

This isn’t a prediction or a rumor. It’s simply a football discussion about a veteran free agent who could make sense if he proves he’s healthy and the Giants decide they want to add another physical presence to their running back room before or during the 2026 season.

John Harbaugh Has Always Believed in a Deep Running Back Room

Throughout his coaching career, Harbaugh has consistently built offenses around a physical running game. Whether it was rotating multiple running backs in Baltimore or leaning on a featured power runner like Derrick Henry, his teams have always been committed to wearing defenses down.

Rather than relying on one player to carry the load, Harbaugh has frequently used a running back by committee approach to keep everyone fresh throughout the season.

That philosophy could fit perfectly with the Giants’ current roster.

The Giants Already Have Talent in the Backfield

The Giants have assembled an intriguing group of running backs heading into the 2026 season.

Tyrone Tracy provides explosiveness and versatility, Cam Skattebo brings toughness and downhill power, while Devin Singletary offers veteran experience and reliability. It’s a well-rounded group, but adding another experienced power back isn’t completely out of the question if the opportunity presents itself.

That’s where Najee Harris becomes an interesting name to discuss.

Why Najee Harris Makes Sense

At 28 years old, Harris still offers a complete three-down skill set. Throughout his career, he’s shown he can run between the tackles, contribute as a receiver out of the backfield, and hold up in pass protection.

Perhaps just as importantly, Harbaugh and his coaching staff know exactly what Harris brings to the table. During Harbaugh’s years coaching the Baltimore Ravens, his defense faced Harris twice every season while Harris was with the Pittsburgh Steelers. That familiarity could make him an attractive option if the Giants ever decided to explore adding another veteran runner.

The Biggest Question Is His Health

The biggest obstacle isn’t Harris’ talent. It’s whether he’ll return to full strength.

Unfortunately, Harris suffered a torn Achilles after just three games with the Los Angeles Chargers during the 2025 season. Achilles injuries are among the toughest for running backs to overcome, which likely explains why teams have taken a patient approach.

There has been some encouraging news, however. In March, Harris’ agent, Doug Hendrickson, shared a video on social media showing Harris running on a treadmill, a positive sign that his rehabilitation is progressing. While it’s still unknown when he’ll be back to 100 percent, the update suggests he’s moving in the right direction.

If Harris can return close to the player he was before the injury, he could become one of the more intriguing veteran free agents available during the 2026 season.

Could the Giants Make a Move?

Right now, there’s no indication the Giants are actively pursuing Najee Harris, and this shouldn’t be viewed as a report. It simply started as an interesting conversation on the Bleed Big Blue Podcast.

When you look at John Harbaugh’s history of building physical rushing attacks and utilizing multiple running backs, it’s easy to understand why Harris came up during our discussion. If injuries occur, or if the Giants decide they want another experienced, physical runner later this summer or during the season, Harris could be a logical player to monitor.

Whether it’s Najee Harris or another veteran, don’t be surprised if the Giants continue evaluating ways to strengthen their backfield as they prepare for the 2026 season.

As the New York Giants prepare for training camp, most of the attention surrounding the backfield has centered on Cam Skattebo. The back has generated plenty of excitement with his physical running style and the identity he seems to fit under head coach John Harbaugh. But don’t sleep on New York Giants running back Tyrone Tracy. During a recent episode of the Bleed Big Blue Podcast, Tim and I discussed why Tracy could quietly become one of the most important pieces of the Giants’ offense this season.

Tyrone Tracy Already Proved He Can Produce

Before Skattebo arrived, many expected Tracy to enter the season as the favorite to lead the Giants’ backfield. Whenever he had opportunities last year, he flashed the athleticism and explosiveness that made him such an intriguing prospect coming out of college. He showed he could create big plays, contribute in the passing game, and make defenders miss in space.

What makes Tracy especially valuable is his versatility. He isn’t limited to being an early-down runner, and that gives the coaching staff flexibility when designing the offense. Whether it’s lining up in the backfield, catching passes out of the backfield, or creating mismatches against linebackers, Tracy has the skill set to impact games in multiple ways.

Cam Skattebo Deserves the Hype

There’s no question why Giants fans are excited about Cam Skattebo. His downhill running style, toughness, and relentless effort fit exactly what John Harbaugh wants this football team to become. If he plays the way he did before the injury, he’s going to have an important role in this offense.

At the same time, it’s fair to acknowledge that Skattebo is coming off an injury and plays an incredibly physical brand of football. Running through defenders is part of what makes him special, but it’s also the kind of style that takes a toll over the course of a long NFL season. That doesn’t mean he won’t succeed. It simply means the Giants could benefit from having multiple running backs who can share the workload.

Devin Singletary Still Has a Role

Veteran Devin Singletary shouldn’t be forgotten either. He was willing to take a pay cut to remain with the Giants, which says a lot about both his commitment to the organization and the coaching staff’s confidence in him.

Singletary brings experience, reliability, and pass protection to the offense. While he may not receive the same number of carries as he has in previous seasons, his presence gives the Giants another dependable option in what could become one of the deepest running back rooms they’ve had in years.

The Giants Could Have a Three-Man Rotation

Rather than featuring one workhorse running back, the Giants may lean on a committee approach. Tracy, Skattebo, and Singletary each bring something different to the offense, and that’s a luxury many teams don’t have.

Skattebo can provide the physical, tone-setting runs. Singletary offers veteran consistency. Tracy, meanwhile, may be the player capable of doing a little bit of everything. His versatility could allow him to stay on the field in a variety of situations, making him an important part of the offensive game plan each week.

My Take

It’s easy to understand why so much of the conversation has revolved around Cam Skattebo, but I think Giants fans should be careful not to overlook Tyrone Tracy.

If Tracy continues to build on what he showed last season, he has every opportunity to earn a significant role in this offense. He may not dominate headlines entering training camp, but he has the talent to become one of the Giants’ most productive offensive players over the course of the season.

The Giants’ running back competition should be one of the most interesting storylines to watch this summer. While Skattebo and Singletary will certainly have roles, don’t be surprised if Tyrone Tracy ends up reminding everyone just how valuable he can be in New York’s offense.

During a recent episode of the Bleed Big Blue Podcast, we discussed several Giants players generating offseason hype, including Deonte Banks, Evan Neal, and Jaylin Hyatt. Out of the three, Banks is the one player I’m actually buying into because we’ve already seen him prove he can play at a high level in the NFL.

Why Deonte Banks Is the One Training Camp Story We Believe

The New York Giants have heard plenty of positive reports coming out of offseason workouts. The difference with Deonte Banks is we’ve already seen him play at a high level, making his resurgence much easier to believe than the rest of the offseason hype.

As a rookie, Banks showed exactly why the Giants selected him in the first round. He played with confidence, embraced physical man coverage, and displayed the size and speed needed to match up against opposing receivers. The talent has never been the question.

What changed over the past two seasons wasn’t necessarily his ability. It was his consistency.

I still believe coaching played a role in that. Banks looked much more comfortable in Wink Martindale’s aggressive defensive scheme, where his strengths were emphasized instead of hidden. As the defense evolved, his confidence seemed to disappear, and his play suffered because of it.

That’s why I’m willing to believe the reports coming out of East Rutherford this summer.

The Coaching Staff Could Make the Difference

One thing that stands out about John Harbaugh’s coaching staff is the amount of experience it brings to player development.

New defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson has built a reputation for developing defensive backs throughout his coaching career. The Giants also assembled one of the league’s deepest coaching staffs, giving players more individual attention than they’ve received in recent years.

Sometimes first-round picks don’t suddenly lose their talent. Sometimes they need better coaching, clearer roles, and renewed confidence.

If Banks is willing to put in the work, this staff appears capable of helping him reach the ceiling many expected when he entered the league.

Why I’m Skeptical of the Other Hype

Not every offseason storyline deserves the same level of optimism.

Jaylin Hyatt seems to generate positive headlines every summer, but we’ve yet to see that translate into meaningful production on Sundays. Last season, when the Giants desperately needed wide receivers to step up, Hyatt still struggled to earn consistent playing time. Until that changes during the regular season, I’m not buying into the hype.

Evan Neal is a little different.

Like Banks, Neal was a first-round pick because of his physical gifts. I actually respect the fact that he returned to compete instead of looking for a fresh start somewhere else. That tells me he still believes he can turn things around, and it also suggests Harbaugh sees something worth developing.

If Neal ultimately settles in at guard instead of tackle, there’s still a chance he can revive his career.

But unlike Banks, we haven’t consistently seen that level of NFL success yet, so I’m waiting until the pads come on before making any predictions.

A Bounce Back Would Transform the Secondary

The good news for Banks is he doesn’t have to be the Giants’ top cornerback this season.

With veterans like Greg Newsome expected to play a significant role and improved depth throughout the secondary, Banks simply needs to become a dependable contributor.

If he plays the way he did as a rookie, the Giants suddenly have quality depth at one of the most important positions on the field. Injuries become less damaging, defensive flexibility improves, and opposing offenses have far fewer weaknesses to attack.

That’s why his development matters so much.

A successful season from Banks wouldn’t just help one player rebuild his reputation. It could elevate the entire defense.

Final Thoughts

Every offseason brings stories about players who look faster, stronger, and more confident. Most of those headlines fade away once the regular season begins.

Deonte Banks feels different.

We’ve already seen the talent. We’ve already seen the flashes of first-round ability. Now he has a coaching staff that appears committed to developing players and putting them in positions to succeed.

If everything comes together, Deonte Banks could become one of the biggest bounce-back stories on the New York Giants this season. More importantly, his resurgence could be exactly what this defense needs to take another step forward under John Harbaugh.

Following a productive OTA period, Dennard Wilson is already establishing a culture built on accountability and discipline. If that mindset carries into training camp and the regular season, it could help reshape the identity of the New York Giants defense.

As the New York Giants head into training camp following an encouraging offseason program, one thing has stood out to me about new defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson. From everything we’ve seen during OTAs, Dennard Wilson’s Coaching Style Is Exactly What the New York Giants Need after watching the defense struggle with consistency a season ago. Whether it’s the way he communicates, holds players accountable, or sets expectations, it feels like the Giants are building a different culture on the defensive side of the ball.

There have been plenty of quotes and graphics circulating on social media about Wilson throughout OTAs. Some have been legitimate, while others appear to have been watered down, rewritten, or generated without any clear source. Before I share anything, I always try to track down where it actually came from. Even when I can’t verify every quote, the overall philosophy being attributed to Wilson is something I can get behind.

A Coach Isn’t Supposed to Be Your Friend

One quote that’s been making the rounds is the idea that Wilson isn’t there to be anyone’s friend. Whether he actually said those exact words or not, I hope that’s the mentality he’s bringing to the Giants defense.

NFL coaches aren’t hired to win popularity contests. They’re hired to develop players, demand accountability, and get the most out of the roster.

There’s nothing wrong with building relationships inside the locker room, but those relationships have to be built on respect and accountability first. Players don’t always enjoy being coached hard in the moment, but many look back years later and appreciate the coaches who pushed them to become better professionals.

A Fresh Start After Shane Bowen

I also think this is a welcome change from where the Giants were last season.

Former defensive coordinator Shane Bowen simply didn’t get the results. The defense underperformed far too often, and looking back, it felt like the Giants hired him too quickly without fully considering whether he was the right fit for the roster. At times, the job looked like it may have been bigger than what he was ready for.

Dennard Wilson walks into a much different situation. He inherits a talented defense featuring Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Abdul Carter, and exciting rookie Arvell Reese. The talent is there, but talent alone doesn’t win football games. Those players need structure, accountability, and a coach who’s willing to challenge them every single day.

From everything we’ve heard since Wilson arrived, that appears to be exactly the environment he’s trying to create.

It’s About Building the Right Culture

The Giants don’t need a defensive coordinator who’s trying to be everyone’s friend. They need someone who demands discipline, challenges players to improve, and creates an identity that carries over onto the field every Sunday.

We’ll find out soon enough whether that translates into wins once training camp begins and the regular season gets underway. But coming out of OTAs, I like what I’ve heard from Dennard Wilson, and I believe his coaching style could be exactly what this defense has been missing.

The New York Giants may not be making headlines with their kicker competition, but it’s a battle worth keeping an eye on as training camp approaches. After what I saw during OTAs, I believe Dominic Zvada Could Win the New York Giants Kicker Job, and right now I’d consider him the front-runner heading into camp.

With OTAs now complete, the Giants have wrapped up their spring practices and will soon report for training camp. While nothing has been officially decided, I think Zvada has put himself in a great position to win the job.

The Giants Have Narrowed the Competition

Earlier this offseason, the Giants made the decision to release Jason Sanders, trimming the competition down to Ben Sauls and rookie Dominic Zvada. That’s when I really started paying attention to this battle.

It’s easy to overlook the kicker position during the offseason, but every year we see games decided by one kick. If the Giants expect to compete this season, they’ll need confidence in whoever earns the job. At this point, I think Zvada has earned that opportunity.

A Different Approach Under John Harbaugh

One thing that has stood out to me is how differently the Giants have handled the position compared to last season.

Under Brian Daboll, it felt like the team was constantly reacting to injuries. Graham Gano battled multiple injuries, kickers were shuffled on and off the roster, and there never seemed to be much stability.

This offseason has felt much more organized. I don’t know if that’s entirely because of John Harbaugh, but I have to believe his background in special teams has played a role. Harbaugh built his coaching career on paying attention to every phase of the game, and special teams has never felt like an afterthought for his teams.

To me, that’s one of the biggest differences between last season and this offseason.

Why This Competition Matters

Some fans won’t think much about the kicker competition until someone misses a game-winning field goal.

Good football teams pay attention to the little things, and having a reliable kicker can be the difference between making the playoffs and watching from home. If the Giants are going to play the physical, disciplined brand of football John Harbaugh wants, they need stability on special teams. That’s why this competition is worth following throughout training camp and the preseason.

My Take

As we wait for training camp to begin, I think Dominic Zvada is the favorite to win the kicking job. Of course, nothing is guaranteed. One bad preseason game or a hot streak from Ben Sauls could change the conversation quickly. Still, if I had to make my prediction today, I’d expect Dominic Zvada to be kicking for the New York Giants when they open the regular season.

While that became the biggest headline, a series of reports and offseason moments caused some fans to question whether the rookie was putting too much attention on everything outside of football before proving himself on the field.

During a recent episode of the Bleed Big Blue Podcast, my co-host made the point that Abdul Carter needed to “relax” a little, and I found myself agreeing with him. Some Giants fans pushed back on that take, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized the criticism was never about Carter’s talent. It was about how some of his early actions, and the perception surrounding them, rubbed portions of the fan base the wrong way.

The truth is, I was excited when the Giants drafted Abdul Carter.

If you’ve followed Bleed Big Blue for any length of time, you know I’ve always gravitated toward defensive players. Growing up as a Giants fan, defense was the identity of the franchise. From Lawrence Taylor to Michael Strahan, Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora, and so many others, that’s the brand of football I grew up loving.

That’s why I was thrilled when the Giants selected Carter. He has all the physical tools to become a cornerstone of this defense for years to come.

My Perspective

As someone who has watched the Giants for decades, I understand that today’s NFL is different. Players build their personal brands and connect with fans in ways previous generations never did. I don’t have a problem with that. My concern has always been about making sure the focus stays on football first, especially when you’re trying to establish yourself with one of the league’s most storied franchises.

That’s one of the reasons I was so excited when John Harbaugh arrived. One of the first things he talked about was accountability, and after the way the previous regime ended, I think that’s exactly what this football team needed.

It Was Never About Abdul Carter’s Ability

My issue has never been with Abdul Carter as a football player. I think he has the talent to become one of the best edge rushers in the NFL. What rubbed me the wrong way was how quickly the conversation turned to Lawrence Taylor’s legendary No. 56 jersey before Carter had even played a regular-season snap for the Giants.

To me, it just felt premature.

Lawrence Taylor isn’t simply another Giants legend. He’s arguably the greatest defensive player in NFL history and someone who helped define what Giants football means. When you’re talking about that kind of legacy, I believe you earn the right to be mentioned alongside it by what you accomplish on the field.

That’s why I agreed with Tim’s point that Carter needed to slow things down and let his play speak for itself.

It Wasn’t Just About the Number

Looking back, I don’t think the jersey conversation was the only thing that bothered some Giants fans.

Early in the year, reports circulated that Carter had fallen asleep during a team walk-through and missed meetings while Brian Daboll was still the head coach. Carter strongly denied those reports, and after Daboll was fired, it appeared there may have been more context surrounding the situation than was initially reported.

Later in the season, however, additional reporting suggested that being late to team meetings had become a recurring issue. According to The Athletic, Carter was repeatedly late to meetings during his rookie season. The report stated that while Daboll often let those incidents slide, the coaching staff under interim head coach Mike Kafka began holding players more accountable. Carter was reportedly disciplined for repeated violations and was even benched to start multiple games.

Whether every report was entirely accurate or not, the perception among some Giants fans had already started to change. Fair or unfair, those stories contributed to the belief that Carter needed to mature as a professional.

The Offseason Noise Didn’t Help

The other thing that stood out to me was seeing Carter making media appearances, including appearing on Micah Parsons’ podcast. Again, there’s nothing wrong with building your brand. Malik Nabers has done the same thing this offseason, and plenty of NFL players appear on podcasts or create content away from football.

For me, it comes down to timing. The Giants were coming off another disappointing season and trying to establish a new culture. Fans wanted to see players locked in and focused on winning football games.

That’s where my frustration came from.

Why It Frustrated Me

When you put everything together, you can understand why some fans became frustrated.

First, there was the conversation about Lawrence Taylor’s number. Then came the media appearances. After that came reports about meetings and accountability. Individually, none of those things are a major issue.

Combined, however, they created the perception that Carter was doing a little too much before proving himself on the field. That’s why I agreed with my co-host’s point that Carter needed to relax a little and let his play do the talking. It was never because I questioned his talent. Quite the opposite.

I think Abdul Carter has the potential to become one of the faces of this franchise.

Winning Changes Everything

The funny thing about the NFL is that winning changes everything.

If Carter comes out this season, records double-digit sacks, forces turnovers, and helps lead the Giants back to the playoffs, nobody is going to care about offseason storylines.

Fans forgive almost everything when players perform on Sundays.

That’s why I’ve never been worried about whether Carter can talk the talk. I’m interested in whether he can back it up.

My Take

At the end of the day, I don’t dislike Abdul Carter. I’m actually rooting for him because I think he can become a special player. My criticism has always come from a place of wanting to see the Giants get back to playing disciplined, physical football. Under John Harbaugh, accountability is expected, and I think that’s exactly what this team has been missing.

As Giants fans, we’ve been spoiled by watching legends lead dominant defenses. Those players earned the respect they received by producing on the field.

I hope Abdul Carter does the same.

Because if he does, this entire conversation becomes nothing more than an interesting footnote at the beginning of what could be a tremendous career. And believe me, nothing would make me happier than looking back at this conversation a few years from now and saying we were worried early, but Abdul Carter proved us wrong.

At the end of the day, that’s all any Giants fan should want. If Abdul Carter develops into the dominant pass rusher many believe he can become, this entire discussion will be forgotten.

And honestly, I hope that’s exactly what happens.
