That’s where Carter’s rookie season becomes much more encouraging. Even when he wasn’t finishing plays with sacks, Carter showed an ability to win his matchups and create problems in the backfield. Those are exactly the traits you want to see from a young edge defender because converting those pressures into finished plays is something that can improve with experience.

There were moments when Carter looked every bit like the explosive defensive weapon the New York Giants expected. Now the challenge is turning more of those moments into finished plays and becoming a consistent threat off the edge.

The Rookie Mistakes Still Matter

None of this means Carter should get a pass for everything that happened during his first season. Questions about meetings, preparation, and reportedly falling asleep during meetings understandably frustrated Giants fans. When you’re a highly drafted player making millions of dollars, being prepared and handling yourself like a professional are reasonable expectations.

The important question is what happens next. Young players make mistakes, especially during their first season in the NFL, but what matters is whether they learn from them. Carter received a quick introduction to the expectations that come with playing professional football in New York.

If those experiences changed his approach entering his second season, some of those rookie concerns could eventually become little more than growing pains. If the mental side of his game catches up with his physical ability, the Giants could have something special developing on their defense.

That’s what makes Carter one of the most intriguing players on the New York Giants roster heading into the 2026 season. The physical talent isn’t really the question. He’s explosive, athletic, can create pressure, and we’ve already seen him beat NFL offensive linemen.

The next step is consistency. Carter needs to finish more of those pass-rush wins, turn pressures into sacks, and become the type of defender opposing offensive coordinators have to account for every week.

After experiencing an entire NFL season, Carter should also have a much better understanding of what works against professional tackles, how offenses are trying to neutralize him, and what it takes to prepare every week. That’s why a significant Year 2 jump shouldn’t be surprising. The Giants could be looking at a completely different monster in 2026.

Brian Burns Shows Why Pass-Rush Numbers Need Context

Our conversation about Carter on the Bleed Big Blue Podcast also led us into Brian Burns and a perfect example of why defensive statistics sometimes need a little context,  and occasionally a fact-check.

A claim was made during the podcast that Burns had ranked much lower in pass-rush win rate than you would expect from a player who recorded 17 sacks. There was just one problem: the stat was wrong. After checking the numbers during the show, Burns was actually ranked 11th in the category we were discussing.

So, yeah, we were only off by about 30 spots. Not exactly our finest statistical analysis, but the mistake actually reinforced the larger point. Pass-rush statistics can tell us a lot about a defensive player, but no single number should define how someone performed.

Sacks matter, pressures matter, win rates matter, and quarterback hits matter. Looking at everything together provides a much better evaluation of how disruptive a pass rusher actually was.

Abdul Carter is a Major Piece of the Giants Defense

The New York Giants don’t need Carter to simply be better in 2026. They need him to begin developing into one of the impact players on their defense. Carter also doesn’t need Giants fans to forget about the mistakes from his rookie season; he needs to make them irrelevant with what he does next.

If he handles his preparation better, continues developing as a pass rusher, and starts converting more of his opportunities into sacks, the conversation surrounding Carter could change very quickly. Instead of talking about meetings and rookie mistakes, Giants fans could soon be talking about one of the NFL’s emerging young defensive players.

The underlying ability was already visible during his rookie season. Now it’s about putting everything together and taking that next step.
