When the New York Giants selected Jalin Hyatt in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, many fans believed they had found the deep threat the offense desperately needed. Hyatt arrived in New York with blazing speed and plenty of upside after an explosive college career at Tennessee.

Fast forward to today, and the conversation has changed dramatically. With reports from Dan Duggan suggesting Hyatt could be fighting for his roster spot, it feels like the Giants are approaching a crossroads with one of their most intriguing draft picks in recent years.

A Player Who Never Found His Role

The expectation was never that Hyatt would develop into the Giants’ No. 1 receiver. Instead, he was drafted to stretch defenses, create explosive plays, and force opposing secondaries to respect his speed. On paper, it seemed like a perfect fit for an offense searching for more explosiveness.

Unfortunately, that vision never became reality. Despite possessing elite speed, Hyatt struggled to earn consistent playing time, even when injuries decimated the Giants’ receiving corps. Week after week, other receivers were called upon while Hyatt remained on the sideline, raising questions about how the coaching staff viewed his development.

More Than Just Speed

Speed can get a player drafted, but it doesn’t guarantee snaps on Sundays. To earn a consistent role, receivers must understand the playbook, run precise routes, block when asked, and build trust with their quarterbacks and coaches.

Reports have suggested Hyatt struggled in some of those areas, particularly with mastering the offense. Whether those reports are entirely fair or not, the reality is that the coaching staff never seemed comfortable expanding his role beyond being a situational deep threat. Even then, those opportunities became increasingly rare.

A Tougher Road to the Roster

The timing couldn’t be worse for Hyatt. The Giants enter training camp with significantly more competition at wide receiver than they’ve had in recent seasons, leaving very little room for players who haven’t established themselves.

Malik Nabers remains the centerpiece of the passing game, while veterans such as Odell Beckham Jr., Darnell Mooney, and Darius Slayton bring proven NFL production. Calvin Austin adds another speed element, and rookie Malachi Fields offers intriguing size and upside. Hyatt is no longer competing on potential alone—he has to prove he belongs.

Let Training Camp Decide

If the Giants ultimately decide to move on from Hyatt, it should happen after training camp and not before. Every player deserves the opportunity to compete, especially someone with Hyatt’s athletic ability and draft pedigree.

Training camp gives him one final chance to show he’s improved, earned the coaches’ trust, and deserves a place on the roster. If he takes advantage of that opportunity, he could still carve out a meaningful role. If not, it may simply confirm that the fit between Hyatt and the Giants never worked the way either side had hoped.

Sometimes, a fresh start benefits everyone involved.

Final Thoughts

Jalin Hyatt entered the league with plenty of promise, but three seasons later, the production has never matched the expectations. His speed remains intriguing, yet the Giants need receivers they can trust in every situation—not just on the occasional deep route.

Training camp could very well determine Hyatt’s future in New York. Whether he earns another opportunity or the Giants decide it’s time to move on, the next few weeks may define the next chapter of his NFL career.

The Giants Finally Have a Clear Leader

One of the biggest takeaways from the Giants’ offseason has been the feeling that John Harbaugh is firmly in control. Successful NFL organizations usually have a head coach who establishes the culture, sets expectations, and makes it clear who is responsible for the direction of the team.

That already appears to be the case with Harbaugh. He projects confidence without creating unnecessary drama, and he appears comfortable making difficult decisions without wavering when criticism arrives.

Most importantly, there doesn’t seem to be any confusion about who is running the New York Giants.

For several seasons, the franchise often felt reactive instead of proactive. Decisions appeared to be made only after problems became impossible to ignore, and fans were regularly left wondering whether the head coach, the general manager, or ownership was setting the direction.

Harbaugh has quickly brought a different feeling to the building. He looks and sounds like the CEO of the football team, which is exactly what the Giants have been missing.

Brian Daboll Was a Talented Offensive Coach, But Leadership Became a Concern

Brian Daboll deserves credit for helping turn the Giants around early in his tenure. He was viewed as one of the NFL’s brightest offensive minds, and his first season gave fans hope that the franchise had finally found the right head coach.

As time went on, however, questions about his leadership became harder to ignore. There were coaching conflicts, staff changes, disappointing performances, and too many moments when the team appeared unprepared or undisciplined.

Following Daboll’s departure, reports surfaced about lighter practices, limited contact periods, and a player-friendly environment that may not have provided enough accountability. Fans didn’t necessarily see all of those issues while Daboll was still coaching, but they helped explain some of the problems that became visible on the field.

Daboll may still be an excellent offensive coordinator, but being a successful head coach requires more than designing plays. It requires managing the locker room, handling the media, controlling the message, and making difficult decisions before problems spiral out of control.

Harbaugh Understands the New York Media Market

The New York media keeps receipts. A poorly worded answer, conflicting message, or avoidable controversy can quickly become a week-long story that follows the team into its next game.

That was another area where Daboll sometimes struggled. There were moments when his answers created more questions, especially when the public message didn’t match what happened behind the scenes.

Harbaugh’s experience has already been noticeable in the way he handles those situations. He speaks directly, protects his players, and avoids allowing minor issues to become major distractions.

One example came during this year’s NFL Draft when Malik Nabers appeared on a live podcast and seemed skeptical of some of the Giants’ draft picks. His comments quickly generated discussion among fans and the media, with some wondering whether there was frustration behind his remarks.

Rather than allowing the story to grow, Harbaugh addressed it head-on. He explained that he had spoken with Nabers privately and wanted the young receiver to be authentic and honest. At the same time, he made it clear that as long as a player’s heart was in the right place, those conversations wouldn’t become distractions for the team.

It was a calm, measured response that quickly took the oxygen out of what could have become a much bigger story. That’s the kind of leadership and communication successful head coaches consistently bring, especially in a market like New York.

The most interesting part of the John Harbaugh era is that none of this has been tested during the regular season yet. The Giants still need to prove that the leadership changes, roster moves, and offseason optimism can lead to victories.

Harbaugh has already brought structure and credibility to a franchise that desperately needed both. His track record gives him authority, but his communication style and decisiveness are what have created such a strong early impression.

There is now a sense that the Giants have a plan instead of simply reacting to the latest problem.

John Harbaugh Has Given Giants Fans a Reason to Believe

No one should declare the John Harbaugh era a success before he coaches his first game. The final judgment will always come down to wins, losses, playoff appearances, and whether the Giants can become a consistent contender again.

Still, it is fair to acknowledge that the franchise already feels different. The messaging is clearer, the expectations appear higher, and the head coach seems comfortable leading every part of the football operation.
