Giants Vs Patriots Week 10 Preview

I’m not going to sugar coat it, this is not going to be in an easy win for the Giants. The New England Patriots are playing some excellent ball right now. With that being said the Giants can keep up with any team. For this weeks preview we asked patriotsgab.com (twitter.com – PatriotsGab) to help break down this match up.

For The Pats

A Different Tom Brady.

Remember when Ryan Clark said Tom Brady sees Ghosts in the pocket? No team made Brady see more ghosts than the New York Giants did the past three games which is why they won. Tom Brady no longer sees ghosts in the pocket at the ripe age of 38. He can move around in the pocket much better now than he did when he was younger and he’s more accurate throwing on the run than he ever has been. You can hit him, you can pressure him, and even get five sacks in one half against him, but you won’t rock him anymore.

The Giants are one-dimensional.

The Giants, who beaten the Patriots three times in a row could run the ball, but not the 2015 Giants. They’ve struggled to run the ball this season and if they can’t get that going against the Patriots on Sunday, they could be in a world of trouble. That will allow the Patriots to focus solely on stopping the pass and pressuring Eli Manning. Expect to see a good mix of blitzes from the Patriots on Sunday because without an effective running game to back the defense off, they will pin their ears back. Of course, the Pats still have to get pressure on Eli because if they don’t, they will be vulnerable in the secondary. This Giants team can pass the ball, and they have many weapons for the defense to stop, which means they have to pressure and get home more times than not or this could be a shootout. The Giants have a top 15 passing offense and the Patriots have a top 15 passing defense, so this matchup should be fun, but still a one-dimensional offense favors the Patriots defense.

The Patriots offense is loaded.

The Patriots have no shortage of weapons on the offensive side of the ball. Edelman, Gronk, Amendola, and LaFell are all lethal, and the Pats have a run game in LeGarrette Blount and a capable pass-catcher in RB Brandon Bolden. This group will be going against one of the worst ranked passing defenses, and a 19th rank rush defense. The numbers on paper don’t favor the Giants defense at all, even though the game isn’t on paper, the eye test doesn’t look much better for the Giants against the Patriots offense either. If they can’t get to Tom Brady all four quarters, they won’t stop the offense and the Patriots will win.

For The G-Men

The New JPP D-Line

For the bulk of this season we have had minimal pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Last week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers we saw what life would be like with JPP back in the lineup. While his stat line did not look good, he was important because he made Jamies Winston feel uncomfortable in the pocket. The Patriots are shuffling the offensive lineup to help protect Tom Brady as they have given up 18 sacks this year. If the Giants plans to upset one way is to get to Tom Brady. Keep an eye up for JPP and Robert Ayers to cause some confusion.

Time of position

Numbers can be deceiving, looking at the Giants running statistics they are in the bottom half of the NFL. I would argue a nice portion of the Giants passing plays are quick passes to Shane Vereen and Rashad Jennings in the backfeild where they extended the play. While the Giants do not possess the “Bell Cow” running back they do have 4 fresh legged backs who share the work load. Using the four backs will keep the ball in our hands and out of Tom Brady’s.

No backing down.

The majority of the time the Patroits win the game even before it starts. Other teams may play scared or timid, not the Giants. This is not the case with Eli Manning and Tom Coughlin leading the charge. Now I can’t say or guarantee that we will win, but I know that we will bring a fight.

The post Giants Vs Patriots Week 10 Preview first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

Breaking Down The Saints vs Giants.

Each passing week seems to bring a new set of challenges for our New York Giants. This week we hope they could increase the lead in the NFC East or at least hold onto it. With the New Orleans Saints game on the horizon we asked Tee Word from Canal Street Chronicles to help us break down this weeks matchup.

For the Saints

The Saints defense has improved.
The Saints defense was in big trouble just a few weeks ago due to injury and a reliance on very young defensive starters. Naturally, the unit experienced growing pains including penalties and the inability to execute the scheme that was in place. As the rookies have had time to learn their assignments and gather in-game experience, they’ve learned to (mostly) clean up their mistakes and make plays when needed. Since facing the Dallas Cowboys, the defense has shown the improvement that is necessary to create pressure and cover the opposition’s primary threat. While far from perfect, the young pups and vets have found a way to generate pressure and force turnovers to help the offense get extra possessions and more opportunities to operate on schedule. The Giants have been squeaking by teams with suspect offensive units by keeping them out of the end-zone. Against the Saints, they’ll have to contribute substantially on offense to win, something that hasn’t been required in a few weeks for the Giants. This unit is hungry and talented, combine that with the light finally coming on and it spells trouble Eli Manning.

The Saints offensive line has come together as a unit.
Center Max Unger was brought in to provide relief to an ailing interior line in New Orleans. In camp and pre-season, Unger received rave reviews (to an extent), then the season started and the offensive line as a whole performed poorly. The main source of concern was Zach Strief and the rapidly aging Jahri Evans. The first three weeks of Saints football in 2015 was rough to say the least. Then the Cowboys came to town and the O-Line was able to provide protection to Drew Brees and open holes for the running-backs. After an 0-3 start, the Saints are 3-1 over the last four games, based in large part on solid line play by Unger, left tackle Terron Armstead, and left guard Tim Lelito. Reserve left tackle Tony Hills performed admirably in relief duty when Armstead couldn’t suit up and his replacement, 1st Round pick Andrus Peat, went down with an injury. In the face of adversity, the pieces have rallied to lead the way for an offense that seems to be finding its groove. The O-Line will play well enough to hold off the Giants rush and allow Brees enough time to carve up the secondary.

Drew Brees is still good at football!
The Giants defense hasn’t seen a high-caliber quarterback since week 2 when they faced Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons. Since then, they’ve faced Kirk Cousins, Tyrod Taylor, Colin Kaepernick, Sam Bradford, and Matt Cassel, not exactly world beaters.

Cousins threw for 316 yards, Taylor – 274, Kaepernick – 262, and Bradford – 280. Even Cassel put up 200+ on Sunday. This leads me to believe that Brees will have a good game, even if he avoids Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie completely. Reasons two and three give me even more confidence in reason number one because I believe that a strong defensive effort against Eli and solid blocking by the Saints O-Line will give Brees the opportunities and vehicle to shred the Giants defense. I’d go as far as speculating that Brees will pass for 300+ and 2 TDs in a close Saints victory. Based on the Saints team who showed to Indianapolis on Sunday, Sean Payton seems to be hitting his stride as well and the combination of Payton and Brees can be deadly when they’re on! I truly believe these reasons will lead to the demise of the New York Giants in the Mercedes-Benz SuperDome.

For The Giants

Control the crowd.
I was there in person last time the Giants flew down to the Super Bowl to face the New Orleans saints I can tell you firsthand that the crowd is deafening. I was able to get awesome last-minute tickets we were in the second row by the end zone and I couldn’t hear what anybody was saying directly next to me. Expect the G-Men to take the crowd out of the game. They are going to try to score early and maintain a strong lead to keep that place quiet. I could see them trying to hit Odell Beckham Jr. up for a couple long patterns in hopes for a quick score.

Bend but do not break.
Linebacker the Devon Kennard returned from his injury last week and played against the Dallas Cowboys well. He played almost half of the Giants defense of snaps and his presence on the field definitely showed some impact. We think that he will be able to play a complete game and see some more snaps this week against the Saints. While initially the Giants run defense was top two in the league it has fallen back somewhat. The defense has been able to force some turnovers between strips and interceptions helping the Giants to 4-3 record. It will be interesting to see how they fare against Drew Brees this week considering they haven’t played a top-level quarterback since week two against Matt Ryan of the Falcons.

OLine still holds strong.
Marshall Newhouse returns to form and rebounds from his past poor play against the Philadelphia Eagles. Rookie left tackle Ereck Flowers also proved his value last week against the Dallas Cowboys holding Greg Hardy to only one sack, w minimal pressure. The Saints defense this year with defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is improved, but definitely inconsistent at best. I think the Giants offense will be able to get the best of Rob Ryan and the Saints. In prior years I always have a feared The Giants going down to New Orleans for a tough matchup. That is not the case this year.

I think we’re going to see motivated Odell Beckham Jr in his professional debut in Louisiana. You can ask any Saints or LSU fan they know that Odell is a game breaker. I think the Giants get the win and go to 5/3, with a bunch of Eli and bunch of Odell.

Giants vs. 49ers Preview San Francisco is coming into town this Sunday…

Giants vs. 49ers Preview

San Francisco is coming into town this Sunday for another prime time event. This game will certainly show us what type of team the Giants are. Will this be a classic trap game or will the Giants continue to defeat opponents that they are expected to. Helping us break down this matchup is Peter Panacy, he is the co-editor of NinerNoise.com his opinion is that the Niners might squeak away with a win.

For the Niners.

If the 49ers Defense Replicates Its Week 4 Effort.
Holding quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers to 17 points is no easy feat. San Francisco’s defense did a solid job of creating pressure, and a lot of that came from second-year linebacker Aaron Lynch. The 49ers’ questionable secondary did well in limiting Rodgers’ receivers as well. The coverage was pretty good all around. The Giants run a similar West Coast offense, as pointed out by safety Eric Reid on KNBR 680, so the 49ers defense should have some continuity here in its efforts to limit quarterback Eli Manning, wide receiver Odell Beckham and a dangerous New York offense.

If the 49ers Win the Battle Up Front.

San Francisco’s offensive line has been atrocious this season, and especially along the right side. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick is on pace to surpass the 52 sacks taken in 2014. New York’s run defense is No. 1 in the league, so the 49ers might not have the best shot to establish a strong running attack. But the Giants pass rush isn’t exactly stellar, so the 49ers O-line may get a little breathing room when it comes to protecting its quarterback. On the flip side, the 49ers defensive front will need to impose its will against a Giants O-line currently doing a great job of protecting Manning.

If Colin Kaepernick Can Take Advantage of New York’s Pass Defense.

The Giants are dead last in the league in total yards allowed through the air with 1,265 yards allowed. Kaepernick’s 2015 efforts have been abysmal. And the 49ers quarterback could be losing his receiver corps. But a permeable secondary, combined with a questionable Giants pass rush, presents the opportunity for Kaepernick and the aerial attack to post some big numbers. The Giants do clamp down in the red zone though, so a big X-factor will be whether or not the 49ers can find paydirt within the 20-yard line.

For the Giants
Defensive stops & improving play.
Under defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, the Giants have steadily improved over the first four games. Essential to this improvement has been their focus on stopping the run. Currently the Gmen hold the No. 1 rushing defense (69.8 yards allowed per game), including some clutch goal line stances.

The Giants will look to bottle up San Francisco’s running game and prevent Colin Kaepernick from making big runs outside the pocket.

Running Back Mix.

Distributing the carries between Rashad Jennings, Shane Vereen, and Andre Williams has proven to be a good strategy. The Giants running backs have remained fresh with the split workload. Against the bills the Giants rushed for 92 yards in 28 attempts. Both Jennings and Vereen have proved pivotal in the passing attack as witnessed by Jennings 50 yard catch and run for a score last Sunday. The Giants will look to dial up both inside and outside running plays just to keep the wounded Niners defense honest.

O-Line Protecting Eli & Creating Lanes.

What was once seen as a weakness has proven many doubters wrong. The O-Line has played as a cohesive unit with multiple players pitching in. Eli Manning has dropped back 150 times this year and only saw pressure on 32 plays. Left Tackle & 1st Round pick Ereck Flowers looks ready to go for Sunday night.

Giants will search for help sealing the edge now that TE Dainel Fells was placed on the IR with an ankle infection. Fells primarily played on running downs, but the Giants expect the same effort from the remaining players to help the O-Line.

Summary
Even though the their record reflects 2-2 the Gmen have shown up to every game and play hard. Minus the two fourth quarter miscues The Giants have been in the driver seat of all their games. Let’s hope we get a loud MetLife stadium, & a big blue win.

The post Giants Vs. 49ers Preview first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

Giants Vs Bills Breakdown Much is written about the New York Giants…

Giants Vs Bills Breakdown

Much is written about the New York Giants this year. This team could easily be 3-0, but in reality this team could also be 0-3. I’ve asked our friends at billsdaily (@billsdaily) to help dissect this team match up in the season.

For the Giants

1. O-Line holds together

The Giants o-line shows signs of gluing together. The recent youth movement is gaining confidence and experience as multiple players have stepped up their game. Justin Pugh continues to play multiple positions well. His versatility was noticed stepping into left tackle last week in Ereck Flowers absence. Flowers should be ready to return this week only helping the Giants run game support.

2. Eli Manning playing smart and quick.

Head coach Tom Coughlin is well aware of the Rex Ryan’s defense they will face the Sunday.

“They’re good, they’re physical, they’ve got good size, they can rush the passer, they can defend the run, the linebacker corps has done an outstanding job, the middle ‘backer had two interceptions the other day, one for a touchdown. That’s a pretty good day’s work,” Coughlin said.

Expect Eli to get the ball out of his hands quickly with short receiving routes. Mixing it up between Odell Beckham and Shane Vereen should keep Bills defense off-balance and open up longer shots down the field.

3. Force Tyrod Taylor to make tough decisions.

Taylor has played well his first three games shown the ability to throw the deep ball and create plays outside of the pocket. Losing both Sammy Watkins and LaShawn McCoy (both listed as doubtful) Will make Taylor lean on less reliable options. The Giants defense has done well, causing some key turnovers. Mid game changes in coverage and schemes could confuse Taylor into being less careless with the ball.

For The Bills

The Bills are coming off a confidence building road win against division rival Miami and they feel they can play with any team in the league. Even though they only play the Giants once every four years they have not fared well against them. The game is in Orchard Park where the Bills have a significant homefield advantage. If they do these three things that will help them get their second straight victory.

1. If Tyrod Taylor continues to play like he has so far this season.

Tyrod Taylor has far exceeded expectations so far in his first three career starts. He is the only NFL QB to rank in the top five in completion percentage (74.4%), yards per attempt (9.15) and touchdown passes with 7. They are the third ranked scoring offense and lead the league in big plays with 17 20+ yard plays. If they have similar success against a Giants defense that ranks dead last in pass defense they can build a lead and allow the defense to do what it does best and tee off on Eli Manning.

2. If they make Manning uncomfortable

Eli Manning is tough to sack so they may not bring him down that often but they need to get pressure and make him uncomfortable in the pocket. If the offense continues to hum along than the defense will be able to be aggressive and tee of. They need to confuse Manning with the unbalanced blitzes coming from all angles. That can pressure him into making mistakes that can give the Bills the advantage in this game.

3. If they get out to an early lead.

That will allow the crowd to stay very loud which will make communication tough for Manning. That along with pressure will diffuse the impact the Giants talented receiving corps will have on the game especially with the possibility of Victor Cruz coming back to the lineup.

Closing

This is going to be considered a tough game for the G-Men. Vegas placed us a six point underdogs. We usually thrive in the underdog roll. Don’t be surprised if the Giants pull the win for 2-2. Please leave your comment below and don’t be afraid to share the post!

The post Giants Vs Bills Breakdown first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

The Giants Look To Rebound Against Washington

It’s week three and yes it’s a must win for the Giants. While many are close to giving up on the season not all hope is lost. Today we will bring both sides of this rivalry. Covering the Redskins is Steve Shoup of Fanspeak.com (take a look at the amazing NFL Draft Simulator they put together).

For The Redskins

1. Redskins rushing attack gives them an edge:

With the addition of Bill Callahan as the new offensive line coach this offseason the Redskins rushing attack has taken off this season and through two games they lead the NFL in rushing with 343 yards. They are averaging 171.5 yards a game, which is up considerably from last season. While that 171 number might not be sustainable, the Redskins clearly want to run the football and have found success versus two talented front sevens this season.

The Giants have done a great job limiting the run so far this season allowing just 135 yards and a 3.0 yard per carry average. They face a tough test though with the two-headed monster of Alfred Morris and rookie Matt Jones running behind Callahan’s play calling and a revamped offensive line.

This will be the key battle of the game, and it’s likely whoever wins this battle will come away with the victory this week.

2. Fully intact Redskins cornerback depth chart:

In their first two games the Redskins were missing one of their top corners due to suspension. Second year pro Bashaud Breeland missed week one and free agent pick-up Chris Culliver was out week two. Now both are back and join DeAngelo Hall to give the Redskins a pretty solid CB trio.

They of course have their hands full with Odell Beckham Jr. who is among the elite receivers in the league. While none of Breeland, Culliver or Hall can match-up 1-on-1 and slow down Beckham, the corner depth means that the Redskins can trust their other corners to do their job to double-team Beckham more often.

Even if Beckham has a good day, if the Redskins shut down the rest of the Giants passing targets, they could do enough to secure the victory.

3. Redskins pass rush vs the Giants offensive line:

The Redskins pass rush has only produced 4 sacks in two games, but they’ve been more effective than just their raw sack numbers. Washington has generated consistent pressure and has forced a number of poor throws by opposing quarterbacks.

The Redskins will look to do the same thing this week as Eli Manning historically doesn’t take a lot of sacks, but he has been known to make some poor decisions when under pressure. The Giants offensive line was a trouble spot heading into this season and with first round pick OT Ereck Flowers banged up, they could be down one of their key players (or at the very least have him at less than 100%).

The Redskins are in a position to capitalize if the Giants line is less than 100% as they bolstered their pass rush this offseason. In addition to returning star OLB Ryan Kerrigan and DL Jason Hatcher, the Redskins added DL Stephen Paea and 2nd rd pick OLB Preston Smith. Paea like Hatcher generates a lot of interior pressure, while Kerrigan and Smith attack from the edges.

Kerrigan is of course the star of the pass rush, but Hatcher has looked great this season as he’s fully healthy (he was on the injury report as a DNP, but it appears to be just a rest day). Smith has also been impressive in his pass rushing snaps and he offers legitimate talent off the edge.

For The Giants

1. The time is now.
Stats for teams that are 0-2 and looking to get into the playoffs are very bleak. ESPN dug up some damaging information, since 1990 teams that started 0-2 only have a 12% chance for a playoff berth. That is the bad news.

The good news is that the NFC East is wide open. The Dallas Cowboys are suffering through major injuries to Tony Romo and Dez Bryant. The Redskins are respectably 1-1 and show a solid run attack. Both the Eagles and the Giants share and 0-2 record and with just one win they are thrown back into the mix.

Since 1990, NFL teams that started — 2-0 made playoffs 63% of time 1-1 made playoffs 41% of time 0-2 made playoffs 12% of time — ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) September 21, 2015

Don’t let the 0-2 start fool you, both games were close. One less penalty, fumble, drop, or meltdown and the GMen could be 2-0.

2. The return of Jon Beason
Giants vet middle linebacker Jon Beason will make his season debut in coach Steve Spagnuolo’s defense. Benson who looked sharp in pre season was missed on some key plays over the past two games. His leadership and communication should help the Giants defense get off the field. The Giants have held up well defending the run with an average of 68 yards per game (3rd best in the NFL). Branson clogging up the middle will also close up some cheap dump off routes. The Redskins are bringing a stout running game but Giants are up for the task.

3. Eli and Odell put together a full game.Count on Eli Manning hooking up with Odell Beckham Jr. early and often. Minus the fumble and minus the meltdown Eli Manning has put together a solid play. He has yet to thrown an interception and is completing 61.8% of his passes.

Manning is looking for another target to open himself up in the passing game. After being slowed down by knee tendinitis Rueben Randle is eager to get involved.

“We’ve got to do a good job of getting Rueben involved some more, get him some catches,” Manning said Monday. “He’s got to be a weapon for us.”

Randle feels getting out there and getting into a groove is key to improved play.

“It’s just about me getting out there and playing fast,” Randle said. “That’s what I want to do. Hopefully this Thursday, I can get back into the groove and make some plays.”

The Giants will look to fire on all cylinders and take out the Redskins early. Hopefully they can hold on to the lead and enjoy the victory.

The post The Giants Look To Rebound Against Washington first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

The New York Giants Take On Atlanta

We one gain asked Matt from TheFalcoholic.com to give us three reasons why he thinks the Falcons will grab a victory at metlife stadium this weekend.

For Atlanta:
Another year, another battle against the New York Giants. Short of a rare game or two, the Giants have had Atlanta’s number since the Mike Vick era, and I usually chalk up the game as a loss in preseason. We are only one week into the season, so it is a little difficult to measure what each team brings to the table this year. The Giants are of course coming off of last week’s deflating loss, and the Falcons finished off with an emotional victory over the Eagles.

Why will the Falcons win this week? I am worried about the Giants bouncing back after last week, and the Falcons losing focus on a short week on the road. The Falcons should win if they do everything I thought they needed to do last year. The only difference in 2015 is that the Falcons have so far succeeded with these three key aspects.1. The offensive line keeps pressure away from Matt Ryan.
Atlanta has struggled to keep pressure off of Matt Ryan, and things did not work out well. They blew up the old offensive line, and are only starting one lineman from their game one lineup in 2014. The current group includes a bunch of sendoffs from other teams, undrafted free agents, and players switching positions. The results? One sack allowed against an impressive Eagles front seven. If they can keep this up, and allow Matt Ryan enough time to pass, the Falcons should have no problem putting up 30+ points.

2. The offense gets the football to explosive play makers outside of Julio Jones.
I think it is just assumed that Julio Jones will have a big game. He has them every week. Assuming he stays healthy, he should be good for at least 100 yards. Kyle Shanahan has done some impressive things this year by moving Jones around, and he has another chance at a big week. The problem last year was the team rarely got the ball to anyone else. Last year, I said if Antone Smith and Devin Hester can get the ball, the Falcons should have a chance. They ended up with 7 touches (including Antone’s 74 yard touchdown catch, oh I miss that guy), while players like Steven Jackson received 18 touches.

New year, new players. Roddy White looked healthy on Monday Night, but I am most impressed with electric rookie Tevin Coleman. Despite his 4.0 YPC average, Coleman has the potential to make big games in the run game. Backup running back Devonta Freeman had some nice catches, and Shanahan has managed to scheme a more open offense than prior years.

3. The defense can play average.
It has arguably been at least four or five years since the Falcons defense could be considered average. Mike Smith, along with Mike Nolan’s incompetence, developed the least-effective defense imaginable. I think it had been years since I had last seen a third and long with more than three pass rushers. Giants fans should be familiar with the idea that if your quarterback gets some help, you should be able to stay in just about any game. The same is true for Matt Ryan, who has not had a defense, an offensive line, or a run game in at least two seasons. If Atlanta’s defense can be average, the Falcons have a great shot at winning. The most impressive thing is they managed to do exactly that against the Eagles. The defense is still clearly short on quality depth, but they managed to prevent any big plays against Chip Kelly’s offense. They were not great, but the Falcons needed them to do just enough to leave with a win.

For New York:
What happened last week was a two minute meltdown don’t expect that to happen every game. What one should really take away from the Giants lost to Dallas is that the Giants look far improved in many areas.

The Giants to come out ultra focused and ready to battle against Atlanta. The quickest way to put the Dallas game out of the headlines is with a win.

1. The Secondary holds up.

The Falcons wideouts will get their numbers especially Julio Jones but expect the Giants secondary to be competitive and not give up many big plays.

Jones has been slowed down by a hamstring injury but numbers against the Eagles last week would tell you a different story. He is expected to be fully ready for Sunday. Giants safety Brandon Meriweather plans to prove doubters wrong and take up this challenge.

“Every week we play the best receiver in the league, right?” I think last week y’all said Dez was the best receiver in the league, now it’s Julio, and next week it’s going to be DeSean So every week is a good challenge and we look forward to it.”

2. Falcons overplay on defense

The Falcons defense looks much improved under Head Coach Dan Quinn. The turnaround could be attributed to playing fast, quick, and playing aggressive. The Giants might employ Shane Vereen more often this game especially on third down situations. The Eagles running backs exploited holes in the Falcons secondary to the tune of 14 receptions for 111 yards and 1 TD score. Vereen with the ball in his hands scan only provide positive things and hopefully swing the game into the Giants favor.

3. Get to the quarterback

I’m still debating was The Cowboys o-line that good or our D line that bad. Robert Ayers and Damontre Moore should be able to get to Matt Ryan with an easier assignment this week. Some home cooking with a rowdy crowd should be able to disrupt some of the Falcons plans. It’s only week two in there already is a sense of urgency.

Starting middle linebacker Jon Beason looks like he will be ready for Atlanta his veteran leadership is needed in the middle and surely missed.

The post The New York Giants Take On Atlanta first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

Cowboys Offense vs Giants Defense

The season is now upon us, and now, the games have meaning. Let’s dig into our favorite rivalry. Joining us once again is Cowboysblog.net. You can find them on twitter @Cowboysblognet. Let’s start!

For The Cowboys

Cowboys Offense vs Giants Defense
The Giants brought back a familiar face when they hired Steve Spagnuolo as their Defensive Coordinator, but he won’t have the menacing squad they had back when they were winning championships and contending. The Giants will undoubtedly have their hands full with the Cowboys offensive line and aerial attack led by Dez Bryant. If this was two or three seasons ago, I’d concede the Giants defense would stifle the Cowboys offense. Times have changed and the Giants defensive line is going the opposite way while the Cowboys offensive line is looking like a championship line. JPP will not be available for a few more weeks, so that helps as well. That being said, I feel good about the Cowboys ability to win most of the battles in the trenches, which in turn will open up the passing game.

Cowboys Defensive line vs Giants Offensive line
Eli Manning turned the ball over with a mixbag of INTs/fumbles and I’m not so sure they have shored up the offensive line enough to give Eli a clean pocket this season. Conversely, the Cowboys knew they needed to fix their lack of a pass rush and they have improved this significantly this offseason. The Giants won’t need to worry about Greg Hardy as he’ll be serving his 4-game suspension; however, the Cowboys have 2nd year player Demarcus Lawrence who has had a very nice camp and preseason. The addition of Randy Gregory will be another weapon for Rod Marinelli. In the middle of that d-line, the Cowboys are expecting big things from Tyrone Crawford who will be bringing it more in his contract year. I think what Giants fans will notice from the Cowboys this year will be the constant pass rush and fresh legs. The Cowboys have legitimate depth that will bring pressure on any given down this year.

Cole Beasley/Jason Witten vs Giants secondary
The Cowboys will be putting a lot of pressure on this Giants secondary with Dez Bryant commanding double teams, and Terrance Williams. Additionally, the Cowboys have Cole Beasley who has become a nuisance for defenders. Beasley should have some nice catches in this game. And let’s not forget the crafty vet Jason Witten, he is still Romo’s escape valve, and I like Witten’s match ups against the Giants linebackers and safeties.

For The Giants

It hasn’t been that bright for season openers as the Giants have dropped the past four. This year the G-men open up against Dallas in Jerry World and will play the role of the underdog. No worries this is a comfortable role for them.

Surprising Offensive Line
It seems that the carousel of movement in the Offensive Line this preseason has come to an end. First-round pick Eric Flowers will now anchor the left tackle position a little bit earlier than Giants fans expected. Even with a juggled line last season the giant still managed to score 380 points placing them in the top third of the league in scoring. Expect quick passes and dumping the ball off at times to ease the pressure.

Time of possession
A lot of doubts swirl around The Giants defense this year. One possible game plan is to slow down the game by pounding the rock. Rashad Jennings, Andre Williams and Shane Vereen will all get multiple touches in hopes to keep our defense off the field and win the time of possession. Win the time of possession and win the game.

Odell, Randle & Shane
I can guarantee that the Cowboys defense is going to focus on Odell Beckham Jr. Opportunities for Rueben Randle will pop up with all that shifted coverage. Giants fans are anxious to see how Odell starts off his second. One more 90 yard game from Odell would only add to the history of this heated rivalry.

OBJ can set NFL record on Sunday. He finished 2014 w/ 9 straight games of 90+ receiving yards, tying NFL mark set by Michael Irvin in 1995.

— Gil Brandt (@Gil_Brandt) September 11, 2015

Shane Vereen should put the Giants offense good motion with some key 3rd down saves. The Cowboys have their share of question marks to start the season, but still are favored by 6 points. It will be a tight game no matter what the point spread or end score reads.

The post Cowboys Offense vs Giants Defense first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

State Your Case Giants Vs Redskins

The Giants square off against Washington to shoot the fair one. In the Redskins corner is diehard Steve Shoup of Fanspeak.com (check out his Draft Simulator and play GM) He will tell you the Skins have a punchers chance.

Redskins Breakdown

Despite being a diehard Redskins fan, I really don’t believe the Redskins can or will beat the Giants this week, but here are my best three reasons as to why I might be wrong.

Alfred Morris vs the Giants run defense:

Alfred Morris is having a down year compared to his previous two seasons, but he can still be a workhorse running back if the Redskins can get the ground game going early. Too often the Redskins get down and are forced to abandon the run, which leaves Morris lacking for opportunities at the end of the game. That is what happened in the first meeting of these two teams, when Morris ran for 63 yards on just 12 carries.

If the Redskins can keep the game close Morris could feature prominently in the Redskins game plan against a Giants defense that is averaging 4.9 yards per carry. If the Redskins can get Morris 20+ carries, he may be able to carry them to victory.

Ryan Kerrigan vs Justin Pugh:

The Redskins don’t have much going for them defensively, but the one thing they can count on is LOLB Ryan Kerrigan. Even without much consistent help from the DL and the absence fellow OLB Brian Orakpo, Kerrigan is having a career year and is terrorizing right tackles. Pugh has struggled some this year and it could be a favorable match-up for Kerrigan to exploit and make some big plays. Unless a repeat of Week 4 happens, this game figures to be close, so one big defensive play by Kerrigan could swing this game into the Redskins win column.

Jay Gruden is desperate:

Both teams are out of it and while both head coaches will of course be looking for a win to point to, things are getting a little desperate for Jay Gruden. He made the controversial call to bench Robert Griffin III, and now is getting significant push back by the fans and some in the media. With the Redskins offense continuing to struggle without Griffin, Gruden is looking worse and worse (though it was probably the right call). While most think it is unlikely that Gruden would get the ax this offseason, if the Redskins continue to disappoint and roll over to their opponents, Gruden might find himself looking for work. This is by far the most winnable of the Redskins remaining games, so look for Gruden to get creative and risky in his play calling. The past couple weeks the Redskins have tried to be more daring in their calls, and that will likely continue to try to end this losing streak.

Giants Breakdown

Blogging for our Giants is Tim Merritt, The Giants finally got a win last week and now they are about to face their NFC east rival, Washington Redskins. This is going to be the start of a winning streak and this is why:

Giants already beat the Redskins:

This is the most obvious reason to give why the Giants should beat the Redskins. The Giants scored the most points they have all season in the game against the Redskins when they reached 45 points. The Giants played their best game against this team where they had 4 interceptions along with forcing 2 fumbles and it was in Washington. Washington has not gotten better since this game either. The Washington Redskins have won one game since these two teams played and they were just shut out in their most recent game against the Rams. Giants are coming off a win, which should boost their confidence along with knowing they are going to play a team they already beat.

Giants know they can win= Giants win.

Odell Beckham Jr vs. Redskins secondary:

Odell Beckham Jr. has been rated as one of the top Wrs in the NFL since he started playing in week 5. His debut came the week after the Redskins game so they don’t even have the advantage of the experience of playing the Giants number 1 threat. If you have seen the Giants games, you would have noticed the offense centers around Odell by either getting him the ball or taking advantage of the attention that he receives. As the Giants gain experience with how to use the “Odell effect” the offense will just get better. Washington’s defense has given up 28 passing touchdowns, which ranks in the bottom 3 in the league. That means one of the top Wr in the league will be facing one of the worst passing defenses. I predict a big game by Odell.

Odell having a big receiving day = Giants win.

Redskins don’t know who is starting at QB this week:

Everyone knows that RG III was benched for his poor play and Colt McCoy was the starter but he was hurt this past week. At this time RG III and Kirk Cousins (who was benched after his poor play in the Giants game) have been splitting snaps with the starting offense while the coach tells reporters if Colt is healthy enough to play, he will play. Does this sound like a team with a plan? How is it this late in the season and there is no order to your depth chart? Whoever starts the game will probably have to do it without Desean Jackson who is injured. An offense that was just shut out does not know who is starting at QB this week and they don’t have their full compliment of weapons. The Giants defense has not been good by any means but after hearing what is going on with the Washington offense, they should feel like they can stop them and probably force turnovers.

Washington offensive confusion = Giants win.

The post State Your Case Giants Vs Redskins first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

Will The Giants Snap A Seven Game Losing Streak?

Giants are playing the Titans this week. I know the Giants are on a NFL high 7 game losing streak but it has to end some time right!? Here are my 3 reasons why it will happen.

Eli is better than Ryan Fitzpatrick

Ryan Fitzpatrick just put up 358 yards and 6 touchdown passes vs. the Titans this past week. This would not be a big deal if this was an elite QB but this quarterback was just benched a few weeks ago for lackluster play and the only reason he was playing was Ryan Mallet was hurt. When Eli sees that stat line he should be excited because he is better. Eli has played well this year as much as people want to blame him for the losses, which were not his fault. (Other than the 5 int. game that was kind of his fault) Eli has 22 touchdown passes with only 12 interceptions (most of that coming from one game). This shows he is taking care of the ball and being effective with it, even when he is getting no protection. If Eli gets any time against the Titans its reasonable to assume he will pass for over 300yds and at minimum 3 tds.
Eli having a big passing game = Giants win.

Titans having questions at the QB position

Well if you saw any highlights because I know you didn’t watch the Titans vs. Texans game, you would have saw JJ Watt drive Zach Mettenberger into the ground and he hurt is throwing shoulder. Zach has played like a rookie QB having ups and downs which is to be expected. But now if he plays he will be playing injured so it is safe to assume that he will probably play worse than he has prior. Titans could also decide to sit him since there is no reason to push it when you can’t make playoffs and there next option would Jake Locker who they benched earlier in the season. Jake has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns this year and to further that point, his first pass after Mettenberger got hurt was an interception. Giants defense is hurting but Perry Fewell is coaching for his job so I expect him to come up with some creative/ aggressive schemes to fool/ pressure whatever one of these QBs play. If you can’t move the ball, you can’t score if you can’t score, you can’t win.
Titans not having good quarterback play = Giants win.

Titans have the worst rushing defense in the league.

Titans have literally the worst rush defense in the league. Giants want to run the ball because when they have a balanced attack that helps with everything such as protection. If the Giants have protection that will help with Reason number 1. I know there is a chance Rashad Jennings will not play this game and if he is hurting I hope he doesn’t push it for a game that means nothing. Andre Williams has flashed potential and I feel like he has gotten better as the season has gone, learning from experience. If Andre the Giant gets his chance to start this week I predict he will have a big night and the Giants need him to contribute if they are going to win. I know the Giants are hurting on the offensive line by losing Geoff Schwartz but the same line that played the first 10 games will be in there. It is said that it is easier for offensive line to run block so I am sure the Giants will help them out and run the ball as long as it is effective.
Giants having a solid rushing attack = Giants win.

The post Will The Giants Snap A Seven Game Losing Streak? first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

State Your Case Giants Vs Jaguars

The Giants face off against the Jaguars this week. We debated with Luke Sims who blogs for BlackandTeal.com on how it will play out. Tim Merritt will give the breakdown for our struggling Gmen.

The Giants are not playing well enough to take anyone lightly. I don’t think the Giants will overlook the Jags this week, here is why the giants get the win.

The Giants are playing to save Coughlin’s job:

I know the Giants are on a 6 game losing streak but this week they face the 1 win Jags. The Giants are having a tough year but the Jags are by far a worse team. The Giants know they are out of the playoffs but they have been in the past 2 games against the 49ers and Cowboys with chances to win so they are putting effort in. They know a loss to the Jags puts this season from just a rebuilding season to a disastrous/ inexcusable one. These players seem to love Tom Coughlin and this organization but with a loss to the Jags that could seal a Coughlin firing at the end of the season. That being said the Giants will be prepared and ready to play to show they are the better team while also letting the want to end this losing streak motivate them.
The Giants will play better to save Coughlin = Giants win

Players will be playing to save their jobs:

Playoffs not being possible with 5 games left in the season means the evaluation to see who will be on the team the next year starts sooner. The rebuilding started this past offseason and will continue in this one. The big question has to be answered who is worth the money. Is JPP? Is William Beatty? Is Antrelle Rolle? The Giants also have to evaluate the youth on the team to see where they will go in the draft and free agency. All players know this business side so if they want to continue playing with the Giants or to get another chance with another team, they will be giving their full effort. Also if they want to keep their jobs and keep management on their side they can’t lost to the 1 win Jags.
Jobs being on the line = Giants win

Odell Beckham Jr boosts the offense:

The Giants were moving the ball against the Cowboys and now this week they play the Jags who are one of the worst defenses in the league. Everyone already knows about Odell Beckham Jr. and that talent he is just tapping into so he is a huge boost for the offense. Odell getting so much attention opens up everything else in the offense. Rashad Jennings/ Andre Williams will see less people in the box so the running lanes will be open. If they are doubling Odell then Randle/ Donnell/ Parker have a better chance of seeing opportunities. Also single coverage on Odell will lead to him winning that battle and maybe making more amazing catches because there is not one person on the Jags that can take away ODB by himself.
Odell Beckham Jr. boosting the Giants offense = Giants win

For the Jags:

The Jags Defense is for Real

Last week the Jaguars’ defense had its best showing of the season. They had five sacks and forced fumbles in the first half against the Colts. That’s not an abberation either. The Jaguars are racking up sacks this season (38 and counting) and their front four in particular are able to change games. The defense’s biggest weakness is the deep ball, but Eli Manning is only completing 28.3% of his passes over 20 yards or more so the Jaguars may not be in trouble on that front. Now the defense really needs the offense to stay on the field longer so they can get some rest and not be beaten down, which leads me to…

Blake Bortles Will Rebound

Blake Bortles had arguably his worst game of his short career last week against the Indianapolis Colts. He mustered up a meager 146 yards (he put up 223 yards in one half against the same defense in week three), no touchdowns, and an interception. He did this while being sacked four times and his receivers dropping four passes (the most since he’s been starting).

This week will be different. The offense will be more conscious of their drops, Bortles will be more conscious of the pressure around him, and, perhaps most importantly, the Jaguars will have to open up the offense.

It looked like offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch put training wheels on the Jags’ offense last week and rather than helping the team out, it just hurt them as they put up only three points and failed to spark any offensive surge. Bortles has struggled with interceptions so far this season, but it’s apparent that limiting the playbook and encouraging passes on the flats to running backs isn’t the way forward. Bortles should have more freedom this week.

Denard Robinson Will Be Back on Form

Robinson had a weak game last week. The Colts stacked the line every play, willing the offense to take shots through the air. Bortles and Jedd Fisch decided not to do that and as a result, Robinson was met by defenders at the line over and over again. He averaged less than two yards per carry because of it.

Don’t expect that to continue.

Robinson was running with the best of them for the weeks up to the game against the Colts and if Blake Bortles starts passing like he does usually (i.e. without Fisch’s training wheels) then the Giants will have to respect the pass and deal with Robinson. Expect Robinson to take advantage of that. The Jags have won their only game of the season when the young running back got 20+ touches on the ground. This game will be close, or in the Jags’ favor if he gets to that number again. The Giants have given up significant rushing yards so far this season, so expect the Jaguars to lean toward running the ball this week.

All in all, it’ll be nice to have Tom Coughlin returning to Jacksonville where we had him start a franchise with excellence. This is a winnable game for both teams, but if the Jaguars play their cards right, they can definitely put the Giants away.

The post State Your Case Giants Vs Jaguars first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.
