The 2024 NFL season is approaching, and Giants fans are building excitement. Training camp will kicked off on July 24th for the veteran players. Let’s take a look at the Giants’ special teams group as the team heads into training camp & preseason.

Graham Gano

Veteran kicker Graham Gano missed the second half of the 2023 season due to a left knee injury that required surgery. The 37-year-old’s injury was to his plant leg, not his kicking leg.

Since joining the Giants in 2020, Gano had been making over 90 percent of his field goal attempts, but last year he went just 11-of-17.

Gano seems ready for training camp, though the Giants have brought in additional kickers as a precaution.

Jude McAtamney

Rookie kicker Jude McAtamney, who has an international roster exemption due to his Irish roots, is aiming to help ease the kicking load for the recovering Graham Gano.

In 2022, McAtamney made 23 of 24 extra points and 12 of 18 field goals for the Scarlet Knights. He was primarily used as a kickoff specialist by Rutgers in 2023, aside from one missed attempt.

Given his international status, the Giants received an exemption for McAtamney, making it likely he’ll spend this season on the practice squad, honing his skills.

Jamie Gillan

Jamie Gillan had his best season yet in 2023, and the left-footed “Scottish Hammer” is looking to build on that success.

Gillan averaged 46.0 yards per punt last season, including a career-long 74-yard punt. He also posted a career-best 42.2 net yards per punt. Only 4.2% of his 95 punts resulted in touchbacks, a career-low, and 36.8% of his punts were downed inside the opponents’ 20-yard line, his best mark since his rookie season.

Casey Kreiter

Kreiter wrapped up his fourth season with the Giants in 2023, following four seasons with the Denver Broncos. The most notable aspect of Kreiter’s performance—and the greatest compliment to his work—is that he has remained virtually unnoticed during his time with the Giants.

There’s every reason to expect he’ll keep performing his duties with the same quiet efficiency.

The 2024 NFL season is approaching, and Giants fans are building excitement. Training camp will kicked off on July 24th for the veteran players. Let’s take a look at the Giants’ defensive line group as the team heads into training camp & preseason.

Dexter Lawrence

Lawrence remained one of the NFL’s most dominant defensive linemen last season. He recorded 4.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss, 21 quarterback hits, two passes defended, and 53 total tackles (32 solo). Remarkably, he achieved these numbers despite missing one game and playing limited snaps in the final five games.

He’s the Giants’ defensive leader, and everything starts with him in the middle.

Brian Burns

Giants GM Joe Schoen traded the 39th and 141st picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, along with a conditional 2025 pick, to acquire Burns and the 166th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Schoen then signed Burns to a five-year, $141 million contract, with $87.5 million guaranteed, making him the third highest-paid edge defender in the league by average annual value.

The 26-year-old recorded eight sacks, 16 tackles for loss, 18 quarterback hits, one forced fumble, and two passes defended over 16 games last season. Burns’ 46 career sacks rank 12th in the NFL since he entered the league in 2019, while his 59 tackles for loss are tied for the sixth-most in that time. He also has eight forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and 95 quarterback hits.

Brian Burns provides the Giants with a massive boost on the defensive side of the ball.

Kayvon Thibodeaux

After a strong rookie season where he finished fourth in the Defensive Rookie of the Year voting, outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux elevated his performance last season. Thibodeaux increased his sack total from four as a rookie to 11.5 in 2023. He also set new career highs with three forced fumbles, 12 tackles for loss, and 16 quarterback hits. As he prepares for his third season, Thibodeaux is raising the bar even higher for himself.

The 23-year-old was selected fifth overall in the 2022 draft. He’s emerging as a top defender in the league.

Azeez Ojulari

Ojulari is entering the final year of his rookie contract. When healthy, he’s shown his potential with 16 sacks in 35 games. However, injuries have sidelined him for 16 games over three seasons, and he hasn’t fully met expectations since the Giants selected him in the second round of the 2020 draft. The addition of Brian Burns and the emergence of Kayvon Thibodeaux should help alleviate some of the pressure on Ojulari and boost his production.

Jordan Phillips

The 2023 season marked Phillips’ second stint with the Bills. He played in 14 games, starting nine of them, and recorded 15 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and two tackles for loss. Phillips was on the field for 392 defensive snaps,but might face an uphill battle against a young and talented defensive line group.

Rakeem Nunez-Roches

In his first season with the Giants, Rakeem Nuñez-Roches played in 16 games and was active for 461 snaps—the third-highest of his career. However, his workload was inconsistent until after the Leonard Williams trade. Nuñez-Roches split his time between run and pass-rushing snaps, with a slight emphasis on the latter, generating 19 total pressures and 12 stops, marking the third-highest totals of his NFL career.

Nuñez-Roches brings value as a depth player due to his versatility, toughness, and high-energy play, making him an appealing asset.

Boogie Basham

Edge defender Boogie Basham struggled to find his rhythm in 2023 after joining the New York Giants and hasn’t lived up to his second-round draft status (No. 61 overall) by the Bills in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Given the Giants’ depth on the edge with Kayvon Thibodeaux, Brian Burns, and Azeez Ojulari, it looks like playing time might be hard to come by for Basham.

Jordon Riley

The Giants need reliable players to ease the burden on Dexter Lawrence. This is where Jordon Riley could step up. The 2023 seventh-round pick faced injuries early in his rookie season but gained momentum toward the end. With a strong summer, could he emerge as more than just a backup lineman?

D.J. Davidson

New York Giants defensive tackle D.J. Davidson returned last season and proved himself as a valuable depth player on the defensive line. He demonstrated his ability to step in as a spot starter and contribute valuable snaps at both nose guard and defensive tackle.

ElijahChatman

The New York Giants signed defensive lineman Elijah Chatman, an undrafted free agent who earned his spot after participating in the team’s rookie minicamp on a tryout basis.

Standing 6 feet tall and weighing 278 pounds, Chatman played in 60 games at Southern Methodist University, the second-most in the school’s history. As a graduate student in 2023, he was named first-team All-American Athletic Conference, recording 33 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and 5.5 sacks. He also earned second-team All-AAC honors in 2021 and 2022.

Reports suggest he’s having a standout summer, and he could surprise some by making the final 53-man roster.

Bobby Okereke

Bobby Okereke enters the 2024 campaign as New York’s defensive anchor after leading the team with 149 tackles, including 2.5 sacks, last season. He also recorded four forced fumbles and 10 defensed passes, including two interceptions. He leads this defense and is one of the NFL’s top linebackers, with his speed, athleticism, anticipation, and aggression setting the standard for other backers.

Isaiah Simmons

The New York Giants are refining their plans to best utilize Isaiah Simmons and his versatile skill set. An interesting development on the first day of the 2024 training camp saw the linebacker working with the cornerbacks. The Giants are smart to keep the process of finding the best position for Simmons flexible.

Micah McFadden

Inside linebacker Micah McFadden secured the job alongside free-agent signing Bobby Okereke after last year’s training camp and made the most of his opportunity. However, it wasn’t an entirely positive showing. McFadden, a fifth-round draft pick in 2022, spent considerable time off the field as the Giants often used dime packages and incorporated other linebackers.

Carter Coughlin

Coughlin has carved out an NFL career in the manner typical of late-round picks and undrafted free agents. A seventh-round pick in 2020, he has become a valued special teams player. Over the past two seasons, Coughlin has played just eight defensive snaps, but he has participated in 85% or more of the Giants’ special teams snaps in each of the last three seasons.

Matthew Adams

Linebacker Matthew Adams, a roster hopeful, was brought in for his special teams prowess. A seventh-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2018, Adams appeared in all 16 games in his first two seasons, earning nine starts on defense and registering 43 of his career 98 tackles during that time.

While Adams can contribute on defense, he will primarily earn his paycheck through special teams play. He has recorded 34 career special teams tackles (24 solo) and a forced fumble.

Darian Beavers

Beavers showed promise as a rookie during the 2022 training camp and seemed poised to win the starting job before a season-ending injury halted his progress. In 2023, his season was uneventful with minimal playing time. However, in 2024, he should be at full strength and ready to demonstrate to the coaches that he can be a significant contributor to the defense.

Dyontae Johnson

Johnson has frequently stood out during training camp this summer, earning him reps with the starters in practice. Last season, he was on the Giants’ practice squad as an undrafted rookie from Toledo. This summer, Johnson aims not only to make the 53-man roster but also to secure a starting position.

Darius Muasau

Muasau, a sixth-round draft pick, is recognized as a reliable tackler after leading his team in tackles for four consecutive college seasons. He concluded his career at Hawaii and UCLA with 436 tackles, including 40 for loss, over 61 games.

Jason Pinnock

Jason Pinnock has proven himself a valuable asset in the Giants’ secondary. After being claimed off waivers from the Jets in 2022, Pinnock was determined to break free from his special teams role. Last season, he excelled in training camp and continued to impress throughout the season. He recorded 85 tackles, two sacks, and two interceptions, including a remarkable 102-yard return against the Dolphins. Pinnock also contributed 10 pressures, 19 run stops, and two forced fumbles. His great range, acceleration, physicality, and improved awareness have positioned him for an expanded role in the 2024 season.

Tyler Nubin

The Giants are confident that Tyler Nubin can handle early challenges, thanks to his extensive experience from 48 games over five years at Minnesota. They believe earning a starting role in his rookie year is a realistic goal. What sets Nubin apart from most newcomers is his high character and leadership qualities. After drafting him in the second round, general manager Joe Schoen praised Nubin as a “culture changer” at Minnesota and expects him to bring that same mentality to the Giants.

Dane Belton

Dane Belton is in the mix for the Giants’ starting strong safety position, competing with rookie Tyler Nubin. After limited playing time in his first two seasons, Belton now has a chance to step up with Xavier McKinney gone. According to Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post, Belton has been impressive in OTAs with his ball-hawking skills while playing with the first-team defense. With Nubin currently sidelined by a hamstring injury, Belton has a strong opportunity to secure the starting role.

Jalen Mills

The New York Giants have added veteran safety Jalen Mills to bolster their defensive depth. With eight years of experience, including stints with the Eagles and Patriots, Mills brings valuable Super Bowl experience and versatility. While primarily a cornerback, he showcased his ability to play across the secondary last season. With the Giants’ youthful depth, Mills’ experience and adaptability will be key assets for the defense.

Gervarrius Owens

New York Giants safety Gervarrius Owens was nearly the last pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, selected 254th overall in the seventh round. Entering his second NFL season, Owens aims to make a more significant impact. Hailing from Moore, Oklahoma, he was drafted to add depth to the Giants’ safety position after losses in free agency. Despite some technical challenges, Owens appeared in just three games as a rookie, mainly contributing on special teams. Now, he’s looking for a chance to contribute more meaningfully to the roster.

Elijah Riley

At 26, Riley has established a solid NFL career since his time at the United States Military Academy at West Point. The Port Jefferson, NY native initially spent two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles before joining the Jets in 2021. He has spent the last two years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, primarily contributing on special teams. Last season, Riley recorded 12 tackles, including two for a loss and a sack, in 13 games.

Deonte Banks

The Giants’ first-round draft pick improved as the season went on and held his own against top wide receivers. With the decision not to re-sign Adoree’ Jackson, Deonte Banks steps up as the No. 1 corner and is also stepping up in leadership during his second season. The Giants are confident he’s ready for the role.

Cor’Dale Flott

The Giants started the offseason without a clear starter opposite Deonte Banks for the second cornerback spot. Instead of signing a veteran, Big Blue is relying on third-year cornerback Cor’Dale Flott to fill the role. Flott, who was basically used in the slot and in packages thus far, will be given every opportunity to be Banks’ counterpart.

Dru Phillips

Phillips. Standing at 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, he has already begun trying to get into further defensive packages including nickel CB. The Kentucky corner mostly worked with Big Blue’s second-team defense, but he’s already earning further snaps alongside Deonte Banks.

Nick McCloud

Nick McCloud, who played all 17 games last year, consistently delivers when given the chance. However, the 26-year-old former Notre Damer has struggled to secure a permanent position. His NFL journey has been a constant battle to make the active roster and prove his defensive impact. Now, entering his third season in East Rutherford, he has another opportunity to do so.

Tre Hawkins

In training camp last year, Hawkins impressed many with his performance, earning first-team snaps and a potential starting role, which allowed then-defensive coordinator Wink Martindale to move Adoree’ Jackson to the slot.

However, when the season started, Hawkins struggled, lost his first-team reps, and shifted to a special teams role. Later in the season, he began to see more involvement in the defense. Now, he hopes to bounce back from an up-and-down season.

Darn at Holmes 

Holmes, drafted by the Giants in the fourth round in 2020 to be their slot cornerback, saw his defensive role diminish over time. Last year, he played only 123 defensive snaps, the fewest in his career aside from 2021 where he was injured.

Despite taking a pay cut to stay with the team, the 5-foot-10, 195-pound Holmes excelled on special teams as a punt gunner, finishing second in special teams tackles (seven solo) and recording a forced fumble.

Aaron Robinson

Robinson will begin training camp on the PUP list for the second consecutive season as he continues to recover from a fully torn MCL and partially torn ACL suffered in October 2022. The 26-year-old, drafted in the third round in 2021, has played in only 11 games and may face a tough challenge to make the Giants’ final roster once he’s healthy.

Tre Herndon

The New York Giants signed veteran cornerback Tre Herndon this offseason, who impressed during minicamp with a tryout that included an interception on the final day.

Standing 5-foot-11 and weighing 190 pounds, Herndon has recorded three interceptions and 32 passes defensed over his six-year career with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has started 34 of 83 regular-season games and has made two postseason appearances.

Breon Borders

Borders, a seasoned journeyman, has played in 32 career games over his seven-year career. He has been part of 12 different teams, showcasing his adaptability and resilience in the NFL.

Long Shots

The New York Giants’ cornerback battle, Alex Johnson, Kaleb Hayes, and Stantley Thomas-Oliver are facing an uphill climb. With strong competition in the defensive backfield, each will need to stand out in training camp and preseason games to secure a roster spot.

The 2024 NFL season is fast approaching, and Giants fans are buzzing with excitement. With training camp set to kicking off on July 24th for the veteran players, let’s dive into the Giants’ Offensive line room as the team gears up for camp.

Andrew Thomas

Andrew Thomas is among the top offensive linemen in the NFL. Despite a freak hamstring injury sidelining him for seven games last season, he remains a cornerstone of the Giants’ offense.

After returning to the field, Thomas quickly regained his dominant form. The 6-foot-5 tackle allowed only four sacks and 17 total pressures on 376 pass-blocking snaps. Impressively, he gave up just one sack and six pressures in the final five games of the season. His performance earned him Pro Football Focus’ 10th-highest pass block grade among all offensive tackles in 2023.

Bottom line: if Thomas stays healthy, he’ll perform as one of the best left tackles in football. This will significantly boost the Giants’ offensive line, making it much better than the 2023 group.

John Michael Schmitz

Center John Michael Schmitz Jr., heading into his second season, has the potential to transform the Giants’ O-Line. Despite his lackluster rookie performance, there’s reason for optimism due to his leadership, intangibles, and physical abilities.

Schmitz was widely regarded as the best center in the draft and immediately secured a starting spot. He will remain the starting center this season. Schmitz should improve in Year 2, especially with more stability on both sides of him, new coaching, and additional opportunities.

Evan Neal

It’s hard to sugarcoat Neal’s performance so far; he’s been a first-round disappointment through his first two NFL seasons. However, with new offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo in charge, there’s hope he can develop Neal, a task former O-line coach Bobby Johnson struggled with.

With veterans reporting for camp and the first practice session of the summer approaching, the Giants have released their initial injury report. Unfortunately, Neal has been placed on the PUP list to start. The former No. 7 overall pick is still recovering from winter ankle surgery and is clearly not ready for full participation in practice.

Jon Runyan 

Runyan spent the 2023 season with the Green Bay Packers, finishing the final year of his rookie contract after being a sixth-round pick in 2020. Over his 1,009 snaps, he earned a run-blocking grade of 53.2 and a pass-blocking grade of 62.4.

Runyan was one of the Giants’ best signings this offseason, securing a three-year contract worth $30 million and is almost certain to start at guard. I anticipate he will make a significant impact on the Giants in 2024, especially with the addition of Coach Bricillo and the moves made on the offensive line.

Jermaine Eluemunor

Many fans see Eluemunor, who followed his former offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo from Las Vegas to New York, as a clear replacement for Evan Neal if Neal struggles this season. He has started games at both left and right guard and became the full-time starter at right tackle over the last two seasons with the Raiders. 

The belief has always been that the Giants would not move Eluemunor to right tackle, but with Evan Neal on the PUP list, that has changed. The Giants hoped to stabilize an offensive line that was in flux for most of last season, but now there are renewed questions about how the line will shape up at the start of the 2024 season.

Joshua Ezeudu

A 2022 third-round pick, Ezeudu boasts impressive athleticism, mobility, and strength—qualities that are highly sought after in an offensive lineman. However, Ezeudu’s biggest challenge through his first two seasons has been his technical skills. He has struggled with consistency in his technique and, at times, with maintaining his confidence.

The Giants seem to be taking a step back with Ezeudu to allow him to develop his game. Hopefully, he can grow and benefit from the better talent that has been brought in.

Aaron Stinnie

Former Buccaneers guard Aaron Stinnie brings veteran starting experience to the table and is set to compete as one of the primary backup options along the offensive line. His experience and skills make him a valuable asset for depth and versatility, potentially stepping in when needed to support the line’s performance throughout the season.

Austin Schlottmann

The New York Giants have demonstrated a strong preference for versatile linemen who can fill multiple roles along the starting front. In his two NFL tenures, Schlottmann initially played 449 snaps at right guard for the Denver Broncos before being moved to the practice squad for most of the 2021 season. He then joined the Minnesota Vikings, where he served as a rotational center.

Schlottmann will need to compete fiercely for a depth spot on the Giants’ roster.

Matt Nelson

Matt Nelson was one of five offensive linemen the New York Giants signed in free agency this offseason. After playing defensive end at Iowa, Nelson signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent in 2019. Although he was initially cut at the end of training camp, he was re-signed by the Lions in mid-December.

From 2020 to 2023, Nelson appeared in 43 games with 14 starts for the Lions. He could potentially emerge as the Giants’ swing tackle.

Marcus McKethan

The Giants selected McKethan in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 173rd overall, with the intention of developing him as a guard. Unfortunately, his progress was interrupted by a season-ending torn ACL sustained during the 2022 Blue and White Scrimmage at MetLife Stadium.

Due to his limited practice reps—none with the starters during training camp—McKethan’s performance fell short of expectations. He started five games and had significant playing time in a sixth, but his impact was underwhelming. McKethan will need to make a strong impression to secure a backup position.

The Others

There may be some additions to the practice squad, including Jake Kubas, Jimmy Morrissey, Jalen Mayfield, Yodny Cajuste, Marcellus Johnson, and Joshua Miles. Most of these players seem to be on the outside looking in and will need to demonstrate their potential to remain with the Giants.

With Darren Waller’s retirement, new opportunities have opened up for others to step in and shine.

Daniel Bellinger

Heading into this season, Bellinger is expected to be the top tight end for the Giants. However, an injury had limited him during minicamp, so it remains to be seen how this will impact his performance in training camp.

Last season Bellinger appeared in all 17 games catching 25 of 28 targets for 255 yards and no touchdowns. The offense as a whole struggled and everyone is looking for a bounce back season.

Bellinger has all the tools to become a top-tier, well-rounded tight end in the NFL. His prototypical size makes him a big target on the field.

Theo Johnson

Theo Johnson, the rookie tight end from Penn State, will start his first season on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. The Giants announced this on Tuesday when rookies reported to training camp.

Drafted in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Johnson is expected to contribute to the offense. However, the team has not disclosed any details about his physical status or the reason for placing him on the PUP list.

Lawrence Cager

The Giants have re-signed Lawrence Cager, a five-year veteran who has been on and off the roster for the past two seasons. Since this is Cager’s second stint with the Giants, he should have a good grasp of the playbook and his role in the offense.

The opportunity is there for growth, and we have seen flashes of potential from Cager in the past. His familiarity with the team’s system gives him a solid foundation to build upon.

Chris Manhertz

Chris Manhertz has carved out a nine-year NFL career despite never playing college football. Despite his lack of a football background and being undersized at 235 pounds, Manhertz has established himself as a blocking tight end. As a receiver, he has been targeted just 40 times, making 26 catches.

Manhertz has made his reputation as a blocking tight end, I’m sure coaches will love that aspect of his game

Jack Stoll

Stoll was another free agent signing from the Eagles. He has appeared in 50 regular-season games, starting 26 of them as a blocking tight end. Over three seasons, Stoll has recorded 20 receptions across 1,343 offensive snaps.

His chances of making the Giants’ 53-man roster might depend on whether the team favors him over Manhertz. It’s difficult to envision the Giants retaining both players.

Tyree Jackson

Jackson, formerly the starting quarterback for the University of Buffalo, was once projected as a first-round pick in NFL.com’s mock drafts.

The transition from quarterback to tight end has been made before, but Jackson’s 2023 season was quiet. After being cut by the Eagles during final roster reductions in late August, the Giants quickly added him to their practice squad. Jackson appeared in Weeks 10 and 11 against the Cowboys and Commanders but did not record any stats.

Final thoughts

Overall, the New York Giants’ tight end group is in a state of flux, and they have brought in a few veterans to strengthen the position. There may be some camp battles for the final 53-man roster spots.

Devin Singletary

Devin Singletary’s signing might have flown under the radar, but it was a smart move. He thrived under Daboll in Buffalo and proved his versatility by performing well in Houston last season.

As the veteran, Singletary will get the early touches out of the backfield and aim to stabilize the Giants’ running back room in Barkley’s absence.

Eric Gray

Eric Gray had a tough rookie season, largely due to struggles on special teams, but the Giants haven’t given up on him. He’s still a key part of their plans.

The question now is what role Gray will play in the offense. As of now we have him penciled into as a RB2.

Tyrone Tracy Jr.

Tracy started his college career at Iowa, playing wide receiver for four seasons before transferring to Purdue. At Purdue, he switched to running back and had a strong 2023 season.

Many experts believe he’ll succeed at the NFL level. He may be a pleasant surprise for fellow Giants fans

Jashaun Corbin

Corbin, who went undrafted, spent the 2022 season on the Giants’ practice squad. The following year he was cut by the Giants at the end of the preseason and joined the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad.

With injuries mounting to the running back position Corbin made a return to Big Blue.

Corbin appeared in 6 games for the Giants last season. He had just one rushing attempt for a single yard, and caught three passes for 12 yards.

He’s going to have an another tough time cracking the final 53, but he does have familiarity on his side knowing the offense from prior years.

Dante Miller

Rourke, spent some time with the New England Patriots, and Jacksonville Jaguars practice squads. Born in Victoria, British Columbia, and raised in Oakville, Ontario, the 6-foot-1, 210-pound Rourke previously played two seasons in the Canadian Football League with the BC Lions.

Rourke is a long shot for the main roster, but a practice squad placement is a possibility.
