Offensive Struggles Continue.

The New York Giants’ quarterback room is the weakest in the league. While quarterback play isn’t the sole can I have a few options , it’s one of the biggest. Drew Lock, once a candidate for QB1 in Week 1, couldn’t even secure a win against a lackluster Dallas team. Lock showed slightly better mobility than Tommy DeVito but still fell short. Lock led the team in rushing with 57 yards, highlighting the offensive woes.

The Giants’ offensive line is another glaring issue. Without Andrew Thomas and Jermaine Eluemunor, the line crumbled. Earlier this season, the line was at least serviceable. Against Dallas, it was downright abysmal. The Cowboys’ defense dominated, exposing the line’s vulnerabilities.

Defensive Failures Persist.

Missed tackles remain a constant problem for the Giants. Rico Dowdle, a relatively unknown player, recorded his first career 100-yard rushing game. The Giants’ run defense simply couldn’t contain him. Meanwhile, the pass rush was nonexistent, failing to register a single sack or even touch Cooper Rush.

Special Teams Show No Spark.

Graham Gano converted two field goals and both extra points, but special teams’ contributions ended there. The Giants’ kick and punt return units offered no meaningful production, continuing a season-long trend.

A Grim Outlook.

The Giants’ Thanksgiving struggles are well-documented. They haven’t won a Thanksgiving game since 1982 and are now 0-3 against the Cowboys on the holiday. At AT&T Stadium, their losing streak stretches back to Week 1 of 2016, with an 0-8 record since then.

Looking ahead, John Mara’s frustration in the press box was palpable. Changes could be imminent, and Black Friday might signal firings. With five games left, the Giants’ chances of winning another game appear bleak. The race for the No. 1 overall pick is on, a spot the Giants haven’t held since 1965. Could history repeat 60 years later?

Offense Breakdown

The New York Giants’ offense couldn’t find its rhythm in a disappointing 28-3 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Their total rushing yards added up to just 76, far below expectations, especially with former Giant Saquon Barkley dominating their defense.

Offensive Line Issues

The Giants’ offensive line held up decently for the first six weeks of the season. However, Andrew Thomas’ injury exposed major weaknesses. Joshua Ezeudu’s performance at left tackle was a significant problem, making it clear he isn’t the answer.

Daniel Jones and QB Concerns

Daniel Jones didn’t have much support, but he also struggled to respond to Philadelphia’s defense. His streak without a touchdown pass at MetLife Stadium continues—now four games into 2024 without a single passing touchdown at home. The streak stretches back to Week 17 of last season.

Drew Lock, who took snaps later, didn’t offer much of a spark. It’s unclear if Brian Daboll will start Lock next week against the Steelers. However, Lock’s uninspiring play gives little reason to believe he’s the solution.

Limited Impact from Malik Nabers

Malik Nabers was active but quiet. After a promising start to the season, he failed to register a catch in the second half, limiting his impact in a critical game.

Defensive Standouts and Setbacks

Dexter Lawrence continues to make his case for Defensive Player of the Year. Despite the team’s struggles, Lawrence has been dominant in 2024. The defense managed five sacks on Jalen Hurts, but the Eagles still racked up 269 rushing yards.

Saquon Barkley had a revenge game for the ages, torching the Giants with 176 rushing yards, a touchdown, and 187 all-purpose yards. The Giants couldn’t contain him throughout the game.

Special Teams and Outlook

Special teams didn’t have much to contribute. With only one field goal made by backup specialists, they couldn’t shift momentum.

At 2-5, the Giants are inching closer to another top draft pick. A win would’ve given them a glimmer of hope, but the lack of offensive production makes it hard to believe this team will turn things around in 2024.

The New York Giants’ 29-20 win over the Seattle Seahawks provided several key takeaways, both on offense and defense. Let’s break down the major highlights.

New York Giants Offensive Breakdown.

Daniel Jones’ Resilience.

Daniel Jones delivered a solid performance, especially with his deep throws to Darius Slayton, including two big plays on one scoring drive. Despite an early fumble—caused by stepping on Andrew Thomas’ foot—Jones stayed composed. He bounced back by leading the offense down the field without missing a beat.

Tyrone Tracy Making His Case.

Tyrone Tracy had a breakout game, rushing for 129 yards on 18 carries. His physical style, especially lowering his shoulder on tough runs, stood out. Tracy’s burst through the line was evident, and he clearly outperformed Eric Gray. If Devin Singletary continues fumbling, Tracy could soon challenge for the starting role.

Darius Slayton Shines.

Despite two drops, Slayton had a solid game. His reliability was on display, and he hauled in deep passes that contributed to the win. If the Giants keep winning, it will be tough to trade Slayton, even though his contract is expiring.

Disappointing for Jalin Hyatt.

Jalin Hyatt, however, had a surprising zero-target game. For a second-year player, it’s concerning to see no impact so far this season. I thought this game we would see some flashes given the status of Malik Nabers.

Theo Johnson Stepping Up.

Theo Johnson showed promise as a receiver. His performance was encouraging, and if he can stay consistent, he could become a reliable option in the Giants’ passing game.

Offensive Line Improvements.

The Giants’ offensive line continues to show improvement. Despite Jones being sacked three times, the line has only allowed 12 sacks this season, a huge leap from last year. They also paved the way for 175 rushing yards, a major win for the offense.

New York Giants Defensive Breakdown.

Pass Rush Bringing the Heat.

The Giants’ pass rush dominated, recording seven sacks. Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux both got to Geno Smith, with Burns’ fourth-down sack being especially crucial.

Dexter Lawrence Dominates.

Dexter Lawrence was a game-changer, recording three sacks. His presence in the middle is a massive advantage for the Giants. No surprises here it’s what we expect.

Deonte Banks Solid in Coverage.

Deonte Banks bounced back from a few rough games. He held D.K. Metcalf in check, limiting his impact and helping the defense shut down Seattle’s passing attack.

New York Giants Special Teams Breakdown.

Greg Joseph Dependable as Kicker.

Greg Joseph has become a reliable asset. Since his first game miss, he’s been perfect, hitting 8-for-8 field goals. The Giants don’t need to rush Graham Gano back from injury as long as Joseph stays consistent.

Isaiah Simmons’ Big Play.

Isaiah Simmons delivered a game-saving play, blocking a potential game-tying field goal. Bryce Ford-Wheaton’s return sealed the win, swinging the momentum back to the Giants at the perfect time.

Next Week’s Challenge: Bengals on Sunday Night.

Next week, the Giants face the Bengals in prime time. Joe Burrow and his dynamic receivers, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, will be tough to contain. However, if the Giants play as they did against Seattle, they can pull off another win.

With the addition of Greg Van Roten now official, I’ve made an update to the proposed lineup from last week:

This lineup brings a mix of experience and youth, aiming to solidify the Giants’ offensive front. Andrew Thomas continues to anchor the line, while Jon Runyan Jr. adds reliability at left guard. John Michael Schmitz, returns for his 2nd year at center. The veteran presence of Greg Van Roten at right guard will provide stability, and Jermaine Eluemunor rounds out the group at right tackle. This combination should give our quarterback the protection needed and open up running lanes for our backs.

The 2024 NFL season is fast approaching, and Giants fans are buzzing with excitement. With training camp set to kicking off on July 24th for the veteran players, let’s dive into the Giants’ Offensive line room as the team gears up for camp.

Andrew Thomas

Andrew Thomas is among the top offensive linemen in the NFL. Despite a freak hamstring injury sidelining him for seven games last season, he remains a cornerstone of the Giants’ offense.

After returning to the field, Thomas quickly regained his dominant form. The 6-foot-5 tackle allowed only four sacks and 17 total pressures on 376 pass-blocking snaps. Impressively, he gave up just one sack and six pressures in the final five games of the season. His performance earned him Pro Football Focus’ 10th-highest pass block grade among all offensive tackles in 2023.

Bottom line: if Thomas stays healthy, he’ll perform as one of the best left tackles in football. This will significantly boost the Giants’ offensive line, making it much better than the 2023 group.

John Michael Schmitz

Center John Michael Schmitz Jr., heading into his second season, has the potential to transform the Giants’ O-Line. Despite his lackluster rookie performance, there’s reason for optimism due to his leadership, intangibles, and physical abilities.

Schmitz was widely regarded as the best center in the draft and immediately secured a starting spot. He will remain the starting center this season. Schmitz should improve in Year 2, especially with more stability on both sides of him, new coaching, and additional opportunities.

Evan Neal

It’s hard to sugarcoat Neal’s performance so far; he’s been a first-round disappointment through his first two NFL seasons. However, with new offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo in charge, there’s hope he can develop Neal, a task former O-line coach Bobby Johnson struggled with.

With veterans reporting for camp and the first practice session of the summer approaching, the Giants have released their initial injury report. Unfortunately, Neal has been placed on the PUP list to start. The former No. 7 overall pick is still recovering from winter ankle surgery and is clearly not ready for full participation in practice.

Jon Runyan 

Runyan spent the 2023 season with the Green Bay Packers, finishing the final year of his rookie contract after being a sixth-round pick in 2020. Over his 1,009 snaps, he earned a run-blocking grade of 53.2 and a pass-blocking grade of 62.4.

Runyan was one of the Giants’ best signings this offseason, securing a three-year contract worth $30 million and is almost certain to start at guard. I anticipate he will make a significant impact on the Giants in 2024, especially with the addition of Coach Bricillo and the moves made on the offensive line.

Jermaine Eluemunor

Many fans see Eluemunor, who followed his former offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo from Las Vegas to New York, as a clear replacement for Evan Neal if Neal struggles this season. He has started games at both left and right guard and became the full-time starter at right tackle over the last two seasons with the Raiders. 

The belief has always been that the Giants would not move Eluemunor to right tackle, but with Evan Neal on the PUP list, that has changed. The Giants hoped to stabilize an offensive line that was in flux for most of last season, but now there are renewed questions about how the line will shape up at the start of the 2024 season.

Joshua Ezeudu

A 2022 third-round pick, Ezeudu boasts impressive athleticism, mobility, and strength—qualities that are highly sought after in an offensive lineman. However, Ezeudu’s biggest challenge through his first two seasons has been his technical skills. He has struggled with consistency in his technique and, at times, with maintaining his confidence.

The Giants seem to be taking a step back with Ezeudu to allow him to develop his game. Hopefully, he can grow and benefit from the better talent that has been brought in.

Aaron Stinnie

Former Buccaneers guard Aaron Stinnie brings veteran starting experience to the table and is set to compete as one of the primary backup options along the offensive line. His experience and skills make him a valuable asset for depth and versatility, potentially stepping in when needed to support the line’s performance throughout the season.

Austin Schlottmann

The New York Giants have demonstrated a strong preference for versatile linemen who can fill multiple roles along the starting front. In his two NFL tenures, Schlottmann initially played 449 snaps at right guard for the Denver Broncos before being moved to the practice squad for most of the 2021 season. He then joined the Minnesota Vikings, where he served as a rotational center.

Schlottmann will need to compete fiercely for a depth spot on the Giants’ roster.

Matt Nelson

Matt Nelson was one of five offensive linemen the New York Giants signed in free agency this offseason. After playing defensive end at Iowa, Nelson signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent in 2019. Although he was initially cut at the end of training camp, he was re-signed by the Lions in mid-December.

From 2020 to 2023, Nelson appeared in 43 games with 14 starts for the Lions. He could potentially emerge as the Giants’ swing tackle.

Marcus McKethan

The Giants selected McKethan in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 173rd overall, with the intention of developing him as a guard. Unfortunately, his progress was interrupted by a season-ending torn ACL sustained during the 2022 Blue and White Scrimmage at MetLife Stadium.

Due to his limited practice reps—none with the starters during training camp—McKethan’s performance fell short of expectations. He started five games and had significant playing time in a sixth, but his impact was underwhelming. McKethan will need to make a strong impression to secure a backup position.

The Others

There may be some additions to the practice squad, including Jake Kubas, Jimmy Morrissey, Jalen Mayfield, Yodny Cajuste, Marcellus Johnson, and Joshua Miles. Most of these players seem to be on the outside looking in and will need to demonstrate their potential to remain with the Giants.
