Following a productive OTA period, Dennard Wilson is already establishing a culture built on accountability and discipline. If that mindset carries into training camp and the regular season, it could help reshape the identity of the New York Giants defense.

As the New York Giants head into training camp following an encouraging offseason program, one thing has stood out to me about new defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson. From everything we’ve seen during OTAs, Dennard Wilson’s Coaching Style Is Exactly What the New York Giants Need after watching the defense struggle with consistency a season ago. Whether it’s the way he communicates, holds players accountable, or sets expectations, it feels like the Giants are building a different culture on the defensive side of the ball.

There have been plenty of quotes and graphics circulating on social media about Wilson throughout OTAs. Some have been legitimate, while others appear to have been watered down, rewritten, or generated without any clear source. Before I share anything, I always try to track down where it actually came from. Even when I can’t verify every quote, the overall philosophy being attributed to Wilson is something I can get behind.

A Coach Isn’t Supposed to Be Your Friend

One quote that’s been making the rounds is the idea that Wilson isn’t there to be anyone’s friend. Whether he actually said those exact words or not, I hope that’s the mentality he’s bringing to the Giants defense.

NFL coaches aren’t hired to win popularity contests. They’re hired to develop players, demand accountability, and get the most out of the roster.

There’s nothing wrong with building relationships inside the locker room, but those relationships have to be built on respect and accountability first. Players don’t always enjoy being coached hard in the moment, but many look back years later and appreciate the coaches who pushed them to become better professionals.

A Fresh Start After Shane Bowen

I also think this is a welcome change from where the Giants were last season.

Former defensive coordinator Shane Bowen simply didn’t get the results. The defense underperformed far too often, and looking back, it felt like the Giants hired him too quickly without fully considering whether he was the right fit for the roster. At times, the job looked like it may have been bigger than what he was ready for.

Dennard Wilson walks into a much different situation. He inherits a talented defense featuring Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Abdul Carter, and exciting rookie Arvell Reese. The talent is there, but talent alone doesn’t win football games. Those players need structure, accountability, and a coach who’s willing to challenge them every single day.

From everything we’ve heard since Wilson arrived, that appears to be exactly the environment he’s trying to create.

It’s About Building the Right Culture

The Giants don’t need a defensive coordinator who’s trying to be everyone’s friend. They need someone who demands discipline, challenges players to improve, and creates an identity that carries over onto the field every Sunday.

We’ll find out soon enough whether that translates into wins once training camp begins and the regular season gets underway. But coming out of OTAs, I like what I’ve heard from Dennard Wilson, and I believe his coaching style could be exactly what this defense has been missing.

The New York Giants made a major investment in their defense by selecting linebacker Arvell Reese out of Ohio State with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

This wasn’t just about drafting another linebacker. It was about adding a player who fits exactly what head coach John Harbaugh wants to build on defense.

A Defensive Chess Piece

At 6-foot-4 and 243 pounds, Reese has the size to hold his own in the middle of the defense, but what really separates him is his athleticism. He reportedly ran a 4.46-second 40-yard dash, giving him rare speed for a player of his size.

That combination allows the Giants to move him all over the field. He can line up as an off-ball linebacker on one play, then rush the quarterback off the edge on the next. That kind of versatility is something defensive coordinators love because it makes life much harder on opposing offenses.

Built for John Harbaugh’s Defense

One thing we’ve already seen from John Harbaugh is that he wants to build a physical, aggressive football team. Reese checks every one of those boxes.

His speed, size, and ability to close on the football should make him a dangerous weapon in blitz packages, while also giving the Giants another defender capable of making plays in space.

The Giants aren’t asking Reese to do just one job. They’re bringing him in to be a difference-maker all over the field.

Reese also walks into a great situation. Instead of being asked to carry the defense by himself, he’ll join a talented front seven that already features veterans like Tremaine Edmunds, Brian Burns, and Abdul Carter.

With offenses forced to account for multiple pass rushers, Reese should have plenty of opportunities to make an impact as both a run defender and pass rusher.

Final Thoughts

I really like this pick. Reese gives the Giants another versatile athlete who fits the identity Harbaugh is trying to establish. He’s physical, explosive, and has the flexibility to line up in multiple roles.

If he develops the way many expect, Arvell Reese could become one of the key building blocks of the Giants’ defense for years to come.
