After a long struggle with an MRSA infection of the ankle, treatments including multiple surgeries and IV antibiotics to clear the infection, TE Daniel Fells announced his retirement on Instagram last night.

This picture of me and my baby girl was taken a little over a year ago at Quest Diagnostic. I wish I was heading into battle with my brothers as Training Camp starts up this week but I also believe that everything happens for a reason. Although playing the game is no longer in the cards for me I’m grateful for the 10 year career that I was blessed to experience. Thank you all for the phone calls, text messages, emails and well wishes that I’ve gotten over the last few months. I’m working hard to accept my physical limitations and the mental struggles that go along with them. I know that I’m lucky to be alive so I’m determined to make the most of everyday that I have. Looking forward to cheering for my G-men and all of my former teammates on different teams around the nation this year #onceagiantalwaysagiant

Giants tight end Daniel Fells Remains Hospitalized With MRSA Infection of the ankle. Fells who was placed on season-ending Injury reserve continues to battle his persistent foot and ankle infection. An update was given by Ian Rapoport from NFL.com earlier this morning.

Fells has been hospitalized for more than a week as he battles a persistent Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection that necessitated being placed in the Intensive Care Unit on Friday. He’s since been moved to a private room to have a nurse focus solely on his care.

The Giants tight ends well remain in the hospital for continued assessment, IV anabiotics, and possibly more procedures the cleanup the infection and save his foot according to Rapoport.

Fells has had five surgeries, according to a person with knowledge of his condition. More are coming, as doctors try to stave off further infection. As of Saturday night, they were fighting to save his foot, which is at risk given the nature of the infection.
