The New York Giants dropped to 2-7 after falling 34-24 to the 49ers, and while the offense showed some fight, the story of this game once again centers on a defense that cannot get stops. It was another long afternoon of missed tackles, blown assignments, and zero rhythm on that side of the ball. Let’s break it all down.

The Run Defense Is Becoming a Weekly Problem

San Francisco controlled the game at the line of scrimmage. The Giants gave up 159 rushing yards and never looked close to slowing Christian McCaffrey, who piled up 106 on his own. Every time he touched the ball he found space, either slipping through tackles or catching the Giants out of position. When the other team owns the run game like that, everything else becomes an uphill battle.

The Shane Bowen Situation Is Officially a Crisis

There is no avoiding the truth. The defense has now surrendered more than 30 points in three straight games. What was hyped as a potential top ten unit in August looks unprepared and poorly coordinated in November. The issues are not isolated. They show up in coverage, in the pass rush, in tackling, and in situational football. At this point it is difficult to justify keeping Shane Bowen in charge of this group. The results are not improving and the same mistakes are repeating.

A Few Standouts, but Not Enough to Matter

If there is one player who continues to bring energy every week, it is Brian Burns. He added another sack and forced a fumble, showing once again that he is one of the most explosive defenders on the roster. His production keeps stacking, even though the defense around him continues to flounder.

Dexter Lawrence had a quieter day, which does not help the conversation after his recent comments about respect. The Giants needed a dominant performance up front and did not get it.

Deonte Banks had a rough outing as well. He struggled in space and took a poor angle on the touchdown run where he bounced off the ball carrier. With so many injuries at corner, Banks is being pushed into more snaps than he may be ready for, and the inconsistencies are showing.

Jaxson Dart Continues to Compete

On the positive side, Jaxson Dart continues to fight through adversity. The rookie quarterback tossed three touchdowns and did everything he could to keep the offense alive. He is playing without several key weapons and still manages to create plays and push the ball downfield. You can see his confidence growing even in tough situations.

Theo Johnson needs to clean up the drops. The talent is obvious, but the Giants cannot afford missed opportunities when the receiving group is already depleted.

The Offensive Line Missed Eluemunor

With Jermaine Eluemunor unavailable, Marcus Mbow stepped in and had a difficult day. He is still learning and adjusting to the speed of NFL pass rushers. His struggles showed how valuable Eluemunor has been on the right side. Until everyone is healthy again, the line will continue to be a week-to-week challenge.

Injuries Continue to Shape the Season

The Giants are getting hit everywhere. Wide receiver, linebacker, corner, offensive line. It feels like every position group has been hit with multiple losses. At this rate the team might be pulling people out of Wawa to fill roles. You can only shuffle the deck so many times before it catches up with you.

Graham Gano also missed his first field goal of the year. That miss took the air out of a promising early drive and hurt the Giants’ momentum.

What Comes Next For Big Blue?

With a 2-7 record, reality is setting in. Fans are already eyeing draft positioning and trying to figure out where this season is heading. The trade deadline arrives Tuesday at 4 p.m. EST, and now the question becomes whether Joe Schoen shakes things up or stays quiet.

Either way, the next few days will tell us a lot about the direction the front office wants to take for the rest of the year.

Defensive Standouts and Setbacks

Dexter Lawrence continues to make his case for Defensive Player of the Year. Despite the team’s struggles, Lawrence has been dominant in 2024. The defense managed five sacks on Jalen Hurts, but the Eagles still racked up 269 rushing yards.

Saquon Barkley had a revenge game for the ages, torching the Giants with 176 rushing yards, a touchdown, and 187 all-purpose yards. The Giants couldn’t contain him throughout the game.

Special Teams and Outlook

Special teams didn’t have much to contribute. With only one field goal made by backup specialists, they couldn’t shift momentum.

Offensive Struggles Continue.

Daniel Jones now sits at 1-14 in primetime games and 0-2 for 2024. Unfortunately, he continues to fall short under the spotlight.

The interception Jones threw in the red zone was a critical mistake. In that situation, it’s better to take the sack or throw the ball away—anything but turn it over. His decision-making let the team down.

Jones also missed key throws. One painful example was a 4th-and-3 pass targeting Darius Slayton when Wan’Dale Robinson was wide open.

At MetLife Stadium, Jones hasn’t thrown a touchdown since Week 17 of 2022 against the Colts. So far in 2024, he’s thrown 4 interceptions and 0 touchdowns at home.

On a brighter note, Tyrone Tracy had a breakout game. With 50 rushing yards, 57 receiving yards, and his first NFL touchdown, he proved he deserves more snaps. Tracy is making a case to be RB2 and could push for the top spot if Devin Singletary’s fumble issues continue.

Jalin Hyatt finally recorded his first catch of the season, but it was only for six yards on four targets. It’s hard not to wonder if the hype around Hyatt is beginning to fade.

Defensive Highlights.

Azeez Ojulari had a stellar performance with two sacks and constant pressure on Joe Burrow. His presence was felt throughout the game, especially with Kayvon Thibodeaux out.

Brian Burns seems to be finding his rhythm. He notched another sack and brought solid pressure off the edge.

Dexter Lawrence continues to dominate, earning his seventh sack of the season. He commands double teams on nearly every play and is building a strong case for Defensive Player of the Year in 2024.

Jones’ poor performance, combined with Saquon Barkley’s strong debut for the Eagles, has fans frustrated. They’re already calling for Drew Lock or Tommy DeVito to replace Jones. Some are even looking ahead to the 2025 draft class for a new quarterback.

Running Game Woes Without Barkley.

The Giants’ running game was virtually non-existent. Devin Singletary managed just 37 yards on 10 carries, while Daniel Jones added only 15 yards on six carries. Barkley’s absence is clearly felt in the run game, even if paying a 27-year-old running back wasn’t the best long-term move.

Nabers’ Solid Debut.

Malik Nabers had a decent NFL debut with five catches for 66 yards. However, with the Giants’ offense struggling, nothing spectacular stood out.

Hyatt’s Quiet Game.

Jalin Hyatt was targeted only once and finished with no catches. A disappointing start for the promising young receiver.

The 2024 NFL season is approaching, and Giants fans are building excitement. Training camp will kicked off on July 24th for the veteran players. Let’s take a look at the Giants’ defensive line group as the team heads into training camp & preseason.

Dexter Lawrence

Lawrence remained one of the NFL’s most dominant defensive linemen last season. He recorded 4.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss, 21 quarterback hits, two passes defended, and 53 total tackles (32 solo). Remarkably, he achieved these numbers despite missing one game and playing limited snaps in the final five games.

He’s the Giants’ defensive leader, and everything starts with him in the middle.

Brian Burns

Giants GM Joe Schoen traded the 39th and 141st picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, along with a conditional 2025 pick, to acquire Burns and the 166th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Schoen then signed Burns to a five-year, $141 million contract, with $87.5 million guaranteed, making him the third highest-paid edge defender in the league by average annual value.

The 26-year-old recorded eight sacks, 16 tackles for loss, 18 quarterback hits, one forced fumble, and two passes defended over 16 games last season. Burns’ 46 career sacks rank 12th in the NFL since he entered the league in 2019, while his 59 tackles for loss are tied for the sixth-most in that time. He also has eight forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and 95 quarterback hits.

Brian Burns provides the Giants with a massive boost on the defensive side of the ball.

Kayvon Thibodeaux

After a strong rookie season where he finished fourth in the Defensive Rookie of the Year voting, outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux elevated his performance last season. Thibodeaux increased his sack total from four as a rookie to 11.5 in 2023. He also set new career highs with three forced fumbles, 12 tackles for loss, and 16 quarterback hits. As he prepares for his third season, Thibodeaux is raising the bar even higher for himself.

The 23-year-old was selected fifth overall in the 2022 draft. He’s emerging as a top defender in the league.

Azeez Ojulari

Ojulari is entering the final year of his rookie contract. When healthy, he’s shown his potential with 16 sacks in 35 games. However, injuries have sidelined him for 16 games over three seasons, and he hasn’t fully met expectations since the Giants selected him in the second round of the 2020 draft. The addition of Brian Burns and the emergence of Kayvon Thibodeaux should help alleviate some of the pressure on Ojulari and boost his production.

Jordan Phillips

The 2023 season marked Phillips’ second stint with the Bills. He played in 14 games, starting nine of them, and recorded 15 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and two tackles for loss. Phillips was on the field for 392 defensive snaps,but might face an uphill battle against a young and talented defensive line group.

Rakeem Nunez-Roches

In his first season with the Giants, Rakeem Nuñez-Roches played in 16 games and was active for 461 snaps—the third-highest of his career. However, his workload was inconsistent until after the Leonard Williams trade. Nuñez-Roches split his time between run and pass-rushing snaps, with a slight emphasis on the latter, generating 19 total pressures and 12 stops, marking the third-highest totals of his NFL career.

Nuñez-Roches brings value as a depth player due to his versatility, toughness, and high-energy play, making him an appealing asset.

Boogie Basham

Edge defender Boogie Basham struggled to find his rhythm in 2023 after joining the New York Giants and hasn’t lived up to his second-round draft status (No. 61 overall) by the Bills in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Given the Giants’ depth on the edge with Kayvon Thibodeaux, Brian Burns, and Azeez Ojulari, it looks like playing time might be hard to come by for Basham.

Jordon Riley

The Giants need reliable players to ease the burden on Dexter Lawrence. This is where Jordon Riley could step up. The 2023 seventh-round pick faced injuries early in his rookie season but gained momentum toward the end. With a strong summer, could he emerge as more than just a backup lineman?

D.J. Davidson

New York Giants defensive tackle D.J. Davidson returned last season and proved himself as a valuable depth player on the defensive line. He demonstrated his ability to step in as a spot starter and contribute valuable snaps at both nose guard and defensive tackle.

ElijahChatman

The New York Giants signed defensive lineman Elijah Chatman, an undrafted free agent who earned his spot after participating in the team’s rookie minicamp on a tryout basis.

Standing 6 feet tall and weighing 278 pounds, Chatman played in 60 games at Southern Methodist University, the second-most in the school’s history. As a graduate student in 2023, he was named first-team All-American Athletic Conference, recording 33 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and 5.5 sacks. He also earned second-team All-AAC honors in 2021 and 2022.

Reports suggest he’s having a standout summer, and he could surprise some by making the final 53-man roster.

There’s no other NFL player quite like Dexter Lawrence. He’s one of the league’s best pass rushers despite standing 6’4” and 340 pounds. While most defensive tackles his size merely take up space, Lawrence finished seventh among interior defenders with 65 pressures in 2023.

Lawrence managed that production despite playing most of his snaps in the A gap, aligned head-up over the center, where he was regularly double-teamed at a 71% rate. He already owns the top two QB-hit seasons (28 in 2022 and 21 in 2023) among players weighing at least 340 pounds.

85) Brian Burns, EDGE, New York Giants

Brian Burns ranks at No. 85. The Giants acquired him in a trade with Carolina and gave him a five-year, $141 million extension. Burns is a two-time Pro Bowler. He was consistent with the Panthers, recording at least eight sacks and 18 QB hits for four straight years.

The New York Giants added Brian Burns this offseason, giving up a package centered around a second-round draft pick to acquire the pass rusher from the Carolina Panthers.

An athletic marvel, Burns was incredibly consistent for the Panthers, posting at least eight sacks and 18 QB hits in four straight years. Big Blue will blitz less often under new DC Shane Bowen, so they need Burns to help incumbent EDGE Kayvon Thibodeaux get after opposing quarterbacks.

Dallas Robinson for Pro Football Network

As mentioned the Giants need Burns to complement Kayvon Thibodeaux under new DC Shane Bowen. Burns’ arrival brings hope for an improved pass rush. Consequently, the Giants’ defense looks very good on paper.

Jones was outstanding in 2023. He put up 10.5 sacks and four defended passes as he spearheaded the Chiefs’ defense to a third Super Bowl win in the seven-year Patrick Mahomes era that has directly overlapped with his eight-year tenure in Kansas City. The Mississippi native earned an 84.1 player grade from Pro Football Focus for his work on the previous campaign.

Of a truth, he and Lawrence would’ve been a dynamic duo on the Giants front line that could have taken New York’s pass rush to heights it hasn’t seen in years. The cost for the Giants to be the boss would have broken their bank, though.

Jones’ price tag would have cratered the Giants into a major salary cap hole

Jones wound up signing a five-year, $158.75 million deal to return to the Chiefs with $101 million guaranteed, as Ian Rapoport reported back when the deal was signed in March, per NFL.com’s Grant Gordon. Prior to, the 30-year-old was on a four-year, $80 million deal from 2020-23. Even on his previous $20 million annual salary, which was almost $12 million less than what he is getting now, he would have been the Giants’ second-highest-paid player heading into next year. That current figure would have trumped Daniel Jones’s $35.5 million earnings for the upcoming campaign.

While the Giants’ coaching and front office heads may have wanted Chris Jones last winter, they were able to fortify their linebacker unit with the addition of Brian Burns, whose eight sacks in 2023 did not fall short of the Chiefs superstar’s output. Nevertheless, the Giants will roll into 2024 with an upgraded defensive unit. Lawrence will do the heavy lifting at tackle, but the Giants have ample weapons that will help their defensive front play up to standard next season.
