There’s No Replacing Dexter Lawrence for the New York Giants, and the front office knows it. After trading one of the NFL’s premier defensive tackles to the Cincinnati Bengals for the No. 10 overall pick, which became offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa, the Giants didn’t chase another superstar. Instead, they built a deeper defensive line, hoping a combination of veterans and young talent can collectively replace what Lawrence brought to the defense.

Nobody Can Replace What Dexter Lawrence Brought

Let’s be honest, players like Dexter Lawrence don’t become available every offseason. His ability to dominate against the run while collapsing the pocket made him one of the league’s most complete defensive tackles. Expecting one player to replace that level of production simply isn’t realistic.

That’s why I don’t view the signing of DJ Reader as an attempt to replace Lawrence. Reader is a different type of player, one who has built his reputation as one of the NFL’s better run-stuffing nose tackles. His job is to anchor the middle, occupy blockers, and allow the rest of the defense to make plays.

The Giants Showed Patience in Free Agency

One thing that impressed me this offseason was the Giants’ patience. Rather than forcing a move early in free agency, they addressed several other needs before waiting for the defensive tackle market to come to them. That patience allowed them to sign DJ Reader, giving them an experienced veteran without sacrificing resources needed to improve other areas of the roster.

Sometimes the best move isn’t the biggest move.

Training Camp Will Feature an Interesting Battle

The Giants appear set to rely on a rotation rather than one dominant defensive tackle. Veterans DJ Reader and Shelby Harris are the two most accomplished players in the room and will likely compete for starting snaps heading into training camp.

The biggest wildcard is second-year defensive tackle Darius Alexander. His rookie season wasn’t what many Giants fans hoped to see, although it’s fair to wonder how much last year’s coaching staff played a role in his slow development. Under new defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson, the Giants are hoping Alexander takes a significant step forward in Year 2. If he can become a disruptive interior defender, it would go a long way toward strengthening this defensive line.

Behind them, Leki Fotu, Zacch Pickens, Josh Tupou, and C.J. Ravenell will battle for rotational roles and roster spots. That depth should create healthy competition throughout training camp while giving Wilson plenty of options along the defensive front.

A Committee Could Be the Right Formula

Replacing an All-Pro isn’t about finding another All-Pro. It’s about building a group that complements one another.

Reader brings size and physicality against the run. Harris offers veteran leadership and versatility. Alexander provides upside if he develops under the new coaching staff. The remaining depth pieces give the Giants flexibility to rotate fresh bodies throughout the game.

That committee approach may not produce another Dexter Lawrence, but it could produce a more balanced and sustainable defensive tackle rotation.

Final Thoughts

There was never going to be a one-for-one replacement for Dexter Lawrence. The Giants understood that from the moment they made the trade.

Instead of searching for the next Dexter Lawrence, they invested in depth, experience, and competition. DJ Reader, Shelby Harris, and Darius Alexander now headline a defensive tackle room that will be counted on to stop the run, free up the linebackers, and generate enough production by committee.

No one player can replace what Lawrence meant to the Giants’ defense. But if this group plays to its potential under Dennard Wilson, they may prove that replacing one superstar with several complementary pieces was the right decision all along.
