Despite the challenging weather, the game offered plenty for Giants fans to feel hopeful and provided some highlights.

Both teams rested the majority of their starters, which led to a low-scoring affair. However, the Giants’ new running back committee and young secondary provided encouraging performances.

Game Highlights:

Running Game: The Giants, utilizing their new running back committee, rushed for an impressive 155 yards, averaging 5.7 yards per carry. Eric Gray was the standout, running four times for 52 yards and scoring both of the Giants’ touchdowns. He also caught all four passes thrown his way for an additional 46 yards. Dante Miller, another running back, showed off his speed with 63 yards on 12 carries.

Defense: The Giants’ defense was stout, holding the Lions to just 110 passing yards and six first downs. The young secondary, in particular, impressed by limiting Detroit’s longest reception to 26 yards, which came late in the game. The Giants also excelled in crucial situations, holding the Lions on all four fourth-down attempts and preventing them from scoring in the red zone (0-3) and goal-to-go situations (0-2).

Defensive Standouts: Dyontae Johnson had an active night before leaving with a bruised ankle in the third quarter. He recorded four tackles, including two for a loss and a sack. Defensive end Boogie Basham contributed with four tackles, a sack, and two passes defensed, showcasing his versatility on the line.

Quarterback Play: Tommy DeVito took over at quarterback after Drew Lock exited with a hip injury late in the first quarter. DeVito managed two scoring drives and played nearly error-free football, demonstrating poise in his preseason debut for 2024.

Injuries:

Drew Lock left the game after injuring his hip, completing 4-of-10 passes for 17 yards and an interception. General Manager Joe Schoen later assured fans that Lock was fine and could have returned if necessary.

Defensive lineman Ryder Anderson left in the second half to get X-rays on his hand/wrist after being evaluated on the sideline.

Dyontae Johnson, after bruising his ankle, was briefly sidelined but returned to the field after receiving treatment.

This preseason opener was a positive step for the Giants, particularly in evaluating the depth of their roster. As the preseason continues, the performances of players like Eric Gray, Tommy DeVito, and Tre Hawkins will be crucial in shaping the team’s lineup for the regular season. Fans can look forward to seeing how these young players build on this strong start

Subscribe To Our Blog.

Be sure to subscribe to our blog. Jashaun Corbin, who was on the Giants’ practice squad last season and was cut by the team at the end of the preseason, was signed off the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad. The Giants also were awarded running back Deon Jackson off waivers from the Cleveland Browns.

Jackson, 24, is a 5-foot-11, 216-pound running back in his third NFL season. A former undrafted free agent, he spent two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. This season, he played in two games with the Colts, was waived and signed to the Browns’ practice squad, was added to Cleveland’s 53-man roster for one game and was waived on Monday.

Jackson has 94 career carries for 281 yards (3.0 yards per attempt) and 35 receptions for 223 yards (6.4 yards per catch).

Gray, a rookie fifth-round pick, muffed his third punt of the season Sunday against Washington. He averaged 4.0 yards on seven punt returns and 14.5 yards on four kickoff returns. As a running back, he had 13 carries for 27 yards (2.1 yards per attempt) and one catch for 1 yard.

The Giants added 2020 All-Pro return man Gunner Olszewski to their practice squad on Monday. The likely move this week against the New York Jets would be to elevate Olszewski. The catch with Olszewski is ball security. He has nine career fumbles in 141 career touches (75 punt returns, 37 kickoff returns, 15 receptions and 14 rushing attempts). That is one in every 15.7 touches, and likely why he was available to the Giants as a free agent during the middle of the season.

The Giants also added linebacker Justin Hollins to their practice squad. A fifth-round pick by the Denver Broncos in the 2019 NFL Draft, Hollins is a 6-foot-5, 248-pound edge defender.

Hollins has been with the Broncos, Los Angeles Rams and Green Bay Packers. He played in four games earlier this season for Green Bay. He has played in 59 regular-season games with seven starts, and has 9.5 career sacks.

The post Giants’ roster moves: Eric Gray, Matt Peart to IR; RBs Jashaun Corbin, Deon Jackson added first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

 <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">38743</post-id>

Giants Draft RB Eric Gray

Marco Ceo

2023 NFL Draft

New York Giants Draft

2023

2023 Draft Pick

Eric Gray

The Giants Draft RB Eric Gray out of Oklahoma with 172nd Pick…

The post Giants Draft RB Eric Gray first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

The Giants Draft RB Eric Gray out of Oklahoma with 172nd Pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The New York Giants are optimistic that they’ve found an up-and-coming player in Eric Gray and hope he can be a key contributor to their offense for the next few seasons.

Gray’s College Career and Strengths

Gray showed consistent production early in his Oklahoma career and had an outstanding 2022 season, excelling as both a ball carrier and a pass catcher. He has the size, skill, and versatility to be a productive rotational back in the NFL, with the potential to develop into a starter.

While Gray is a competitive runner, he doesn’t consistently excel in power and contact balance. He also struggles in pass protection, where his processing and anchoring skills are inconsistent. His narrow build raises concerns about his ability to improve in physicality and contact balance. Although he’s a good athlete, he lacks the top-end speed to be considered a true home-run hitter.

Areas for Improvement and NFL Fit

The Giants aimed to bolster their depth at the running back position and accomplished this by selecting Eric Gray in the fifth round. General Manager Joe Schoen informed Saquon Barkley before the draft that they planned to take a running back, ensuring Barkley wouldn’t be caught off guard by the decision.

A player taken with the 172nd overall pick isn’t expected to challenge Barkley, who has yet to sign his $10.1 million franchise tender, as he hopes to secure a long-term deal later this summer.

Conclusions

For the Giants, Gray has the potential to step in as a solid No. 2 running back immediately, with the opportunity to develop into a starting role. His physicality, explosiveness, and pass-catching abilities will be valuable assets to the team benefit our team in hopes for a strong 2023 Draft Class. Gray would thrive in a downhill system that maximizes his strengths between the tackles.

 Subscribe

The post Giants Draft RB Eric Gray first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

 <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">43029</post-id>
