The New York Giants have finalized most of their practice squad, bringing back familiar faces from training camp.

There’s one new addition to the mix—linebacker Ty Summers. Summers, who was recently cut by the Detroit Lions, brings a wealth of experience to the Giants’ practice squad, having played in 67 regular-season games with teams like the Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints, and Jacksonville Jaguars.

According to Adam Schefter, the Giants are signing FB/TE Jakob Johnson. Johnson and offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo have worked together for the past five seasons in New England and Las Vegas. Bricillo has been a strong advocate for keeping a fullback on the roster.

Adding Johnson to the roster could significantly bolster the Giants’ run game. His ability to create openings for the running backs will be invaluable, especially in short-yardage situations. Additionally, Johnson’s versatility as a blocker can enhance pass protection, giving the quarterback more time to make plays.

It’s worth noting that some teams have phased out the fullback position due to evolving playing styles. With two backs in the backfield, teams often sacrifice a vertical threat, which can limit offensive flexibility compared to a single-back formation. In modern football, especially at the NFL level, the game has increasingly shifted towards a pass-heavy approach, making fullbacks less common. However, with the Giants’ commitment to a balanced offense, Johnson’s presence could be a strategic advantage.”

The Giants’ front office has been busy in recent days, making several moves to bolster the roster. In addition to signing Johnson, the team has also agreed to multiple signings and trading of Jordan Phillips to Cowboys, signaling a focused effort to strengthen key positions as they prepare for the upcoming season.
