The New York Giants didn’t just hire a new head coach this offseason, they assembled one of the most experienced coaching staffs in the NFL.

Under John Harbaugh, New York has surrounded its players with former head coaches, accomplished coordinators, and longtime NFL veterans. On paper, it’s exactly what Giants fans have been hoping to see for years.

But it also raises an interesting question.

If the Giants are successful in 2026, could this coaching staff get picked apart?

A Coaching Staff Loaded With Experience

It’s not often you find this many accomplished football minds working under the same roof.

The Giants have built an offensive staff featuring names like Matt Nagy, Greg Roman, Brian Callahan, and several assistants with coordinator or head coaching experience. Every coach brings a different perspective, making this one of the deepest staffs in the league.

That’s a credit to John Harbaugh.

Great coaches tend to attract great coaches, and Harbaugh has done exactly that.

The downside?

Success usually comes with opportunities elsewhere.

If New York’s offense takes a major step forward, it wouldn’t be surprising to see other NFL teams pursue members of this staff for coordinator or head coaching jobs.

That’s a good problem to have.

Greg Roman May Be the Real Offensive Architect

While Matt Nagy carries offensive coordinator experience, it’s hard not to look at Greg Roman as one of the biggest influences on this offense.

Roman has built physical, run-first offenses throughout his NFL career, and his fingerprints could be all over what the Giants want to become.

Rather than one coach calling all the shots, this feels more like a collaborative offensive brain trust.

If everyone can work together, the Giants could benefit from having multiple experienced voices in the room instead of relying on one play-caller.

The Jason Garrett Comparison

Giants fans have seen experienced assistants before.

When Jason Garrett joined Joe Judge’s staff, many questioned whether bringing in a former head coach would create tension. In hindsight, that situation feels much different.

Joe Judge was a first-time head coach still finding his footing.

John Harbaugh, meanwhile, has won at every level and commands immediate respect inside an NFL building. His experience allows him to empower talented assistants without worrying about conflicting personalities.

That leadership could be one of the biggest reasons this staff works.

The Giants Remain One of the NFL’s Biggest Wild Cards

One of the biggest reasons there’s so much excitement surrounding this team is the unknown.

Every offseason, fans try to predict wins and losses based on the schedule, but none of that means much before training camp.

Injuries happen. Young players emerge. Teams that look great on paper disappoint, while others exceed expectations.

The Giants are one of the league’s biggest wild cards entering the 2026 season because nobody truly knows what this offense will look like under John Harbaugh and this revamped coaching staff.

Expect the Giants to Lean on the Running Game

Everything points toward a more physical offensive approach.

John Harbaugh and Greg Roman have consistently built offenses around establishing the run, controlling the clock, and wearing defenses down.

That’s one reason it wouldn’t be surprising if the Giants add another running back before the regular season.

Cam Skattebo is working his way back, but there are still questions about the depth behind him. Adding another veteran to the room would provide insurance while reinforcing the physical identity this coaching staff appears to be building.

Final Thoughts

There’s plenty of excitement surrounding the New York Giants heading into the 2026 season, but there are still more questions than answers.

Can this experienced coaching staff unlock the potential of the roster?

Will the offense quickly establish the physical identity John Harbaugh and Greg Roman are known for?

Those questions won’t be answered until the games begin, but one thing is clear: this Giants team is built differently than we’ve seen in recent years.

If Harbaugh’s vision comes together, New York could finally have the culture, coaching, and physical identity fans have been waiting for.

And if that happens, Giants fans may have to worry about other teams trying to hire away some of the very coaches who helped make it happen.

“When there’s something that has to be disciplined, I’ll discipline it,” Judge said. “If there was an issue, it would be handled. I love the way Kenny competes. One thing I love about this guy, he has a lot of fire. He has a lot of fire and he wants to go out and be successful. The conversation (between Garrett and Golladay) the other day wasn’t anything in terms of an attack on a coach or player to do something, it was just simply: ‘Hey I can do this, give me a chance on this type of route.’ Those things happen a lot.”

“To me, speaking with emotion and fighting are two different things,” Judge said. “Maybe it’s because of where I grew up (Philadelphia), but I talk with my hands a lot, I raise my voice a lot. Maybe I don’t overreact sometimes in volume. Look, I have to apologize to certain people on the sideline … I gotta tell them on the front end: ‘Whatever I say today, don’t take it personally.

The New York Giants welcomed the Denver Broncos to MetLife Stadium Sunday afternoon, falling to their AFC West foe 27-13, starting another year with a loss. While I’m disappointed, I can hardly say I’m surprised.

The Good:

Despite only scoring 13 points, The Giants’ passing game was a strong point. Daniel Jones threw for 267 yards, and a touchdown to Sterling Shepard (who looked great in his new #3 jersey). Shepard had the best day among New York’s wideouts, securing seven catches for 113 yards, and proving to be Jones’ safety blanket. Free agent acquisition Kenny Golladay showed flashes of why the Giants paid so handsomely for him in the offseason. #19 had four catches for 64 yards, displaying outstanding hands, and the ability to make catches in traffic. Darius Slayton rounded out the trio, flashing on a 42-yard reception down the sideline early in the first quarter. Daniel Jones threw no interceptions, and was only sacked twice on 37 drop backs. I’d like to see more efficiency in the redzone, butconsidering where the offense was earlier in the preseason, I’m encouraged.

Grade: B

The Bad:

The Giants defense was horrifically bad. Patrick Graham has work to do Last years accolades mean nothing now. You’ve got to earn it every year. The Giants defenses of the past are ashamed tonight. This defense showed no bite. Teddy Bridgewater connected on 87% of his passes in the first half, as Denver led 10-7 at the break. The score would have been much worse, had Logan Ryan not forced and recovered a fumble on the Giants two-yard line as Denver was marching in to score. The weakness of the defense was on full display in the final two minutes of the first half, as the Broncos completed a fourth and two near midfield, that catapulted them to a last second score before the break. Denver followed it up with a drive that took up the entire first half of the third quarter. Bridgewater was mobile, and toyed with the man-to-man coverage Patrick Graham used to generate pressure. Bridgewater continually extended plays, and converted on long third and fourth downs. By the midway point of the third the Giants trailed in time-of-possession 28 minutes to 11, and the Broncos were 3-3 on 4thdown. We expect more from you Patrick Graham.

Grade: D+

The Ugly:

Head Coach Joe Judge. The most glaring mistake is obvious, throwing a challenge flag on Denver’s touchdown to start the third quarter. Scoring plays are unchallengable, and the Giants, now down 17-7 lost a valuable timeout that could be used in a comeback attempt. It’s your responsibility to manage the game, coach. Do better.

Judge’s issues go beyond game management. This loss was embarrassing, as The Giants looked undisciplined, and unready to play. The Giants do a lot of talking about playing better, but their issues remain the same.

The Giants pass rush is ineffective. If you don’t capitalize on blitzes, you get burned. The Giants remain impotent in the redzone, going a measly 1-3; the one, a meaningless touchdown as time expired to give the Giants 13 points. The Giants defense was undisciplined, registering three personal foul penalties, (looking at you Holmes, Ojulari, and Martinez).

Daniel Jones continues to have ball security issues, fumbling on a key drive in the third quarter.  And the special teams unit Judge champions missed a key opportunity to pin the Broncos at their own two on a punt, resulting in a touchback.

These issues are the same things that plague us year after year.  There is little to no discernable improvement.  That’s on the Head Coach.  That’s on Joe Judge.  

Coach Judge says all the right things, but the time for talk is long gone. It’s time for results Coach, and the buck stops with you. Don’t disappoint us.

Grade: D-

CBS Sports compiled a list of NFL head coaches who could potentially be on the hot seat, Included was New York Giants head coach Joe Judge.

Arguably even less safe in the NFC East is Judge, and the organization isn’t afraid to let you know it. Owner John Mara noted this offseason that “everyone is on the hot seat” in New York — from Judge to general manager Dave Gettleman to himself. Including himself was cute and all from a PR standpoint, but we all know owners don’t fire themselves; they fire everyone else. And considering the wild and whacky training camp the Giants had, one that included a rash of swift and unexpected retirements and at least one practice brawl, Judge isn’t exactly off to a magnificent start in his second year as an NFL head coach. Like some others on this list, his fate is also tied to what happens at quarterback, because the Giants passed on taking one atop the 2021 NFL Draft due to their belief in Daniel Jones. If Jones doesn’t start knocking socks off (and if the Giants can’t protect him long enough to allow it), will it be the fault of Gettleman or Judge?

it falls on Gettleman, you can believe he’ll champion his own cause at the expense of Judge (ask Ben McAdoo), because it’s always business and never personal. Gettleman could argue he had a terrific free agency and gave Judge the pieces, and Mara might see his point. However you slice it, if the Giants don’t make noise in the division (and more), Judge better be ready for a tense conversation with an “impatient” Mara.

Call it what you will hot seat, or thin ice it all comes down to the Giants not winning games. Personally I believe a Joe Judge I safe this season and this should fall upon the Dave Gettleman.

If this season doesn’t go well, my prediction is that Dave Gettleman, Jason Garrett, and most likely Daniel Jones will be out the door, and Joe Judge stays.
