The New York Giants dropped to 2-7 after falling 34-24 to the 49ers, and while the offense showed some fight, the story of this game once again centers on a defense that cannot get stops. It was another long afternoon of missed tackles, blown assignments, and zero rhythm on that side of the ball. Let’s break it all down.

The Run Defense Is Becoming a Weekly Problem

San Francisco controlled the game at the line of scrimmage. The Giants gave up 159 rushing yards and never looked close to slowing Christian McCaffrey, who piled up 106 on his own. Every time he touched the ball he found space, either slipping through tackles or catching the Giants out of position. When the other team owns the run game like that, everything else becomes an uphill battle.

The Shane Bowen Situation Is Officially a Crisis

There is no avoiding the truth. The defense has now surrendered more than 30 points in three straight games. What was hyped as a potential top ten unit in August looks unprepared and poorly coordinated in November. The issues are not isolated. They show up in coverage, in the pass rush, in tackling, and in situational football. At this point it is difficult to justify keeping Shane Bowen in charge of this group. The results are not improving and the same mistakes are repeating.

A Few Standouts, but Not Enough to Matter

If there is one player who continues to bring energy every week, it is Brian Burns. He added another sack and forced a fumble, showing once again that he is one of the most explosive defenders on the roster. His production keeps stacking, even though the defense around him continues to flounder.

Dexter Lawrence had a quieter day, which does not help the conversation after his recent comments about respect. The Giants needed a dominant performance up front and did not get it.

Deonte Banks had a rough outing as well. He struggled in space and took a poor angle on the touchdown run where he bounced off the ball carrier. With so many injuries at corner, Banks is being pushed into more snaps than he may be ready for, and the inconsistencies are showing.

Jaxson Dart Continues to Compete

On the positive side, Jaxson Dart continues to fight through adversity. The rookie quarterback tossed three touchdowns and did everything he could to keep the offense alive. He is playing without several key weapons and still manages to create plays and push the ball downfield. You can see his confidence growing even in tough situations.

Theo Johnson needs to clean up the drops. The talent is obvious, but the Giants cannot afford missed opportunities when the receiving group is already depleted.

The Offensive Line Missed Eluemunor

With Jermaine Eluemunor unavailable, Marcus Mbow stepped in and had a difficult day. He is still learning and adjusting to the speed of NFL pass rushers. His struggles showed how valuable Eluemunor has been on the right side. Until everyone is healthy again, the line will continue to be a week-to-week challenge.

Injuries Continue to Shape the Season

The Giants are getting hit everywhere. Wide receiver, linebacker, corner, offensive line. It feels like every position group has been hit with multiple losses. At this rate the team might be pulling people out of Wawa to fill roles. You can only shuffle the deck so many times before it catches up with you.

Graham Gano also missed his first field goal of the year. That miss took the air out of a promising early drive and hurt the Giants’ momentum.

What Comes Next For Big Blue?

With a 2-7 record, reality is setting in. Fans are already eyeing draft positioning and trying to figure out where this season is heading. The trade deadline arrives Tuesday at 4 p.m. EST, and now the question becomes whether Joe Schoen shakes things up or stays quiet.

Either way, the next few days will tell us a lot about the direction the front office wants to take for the rest of the year.

Neal’s Role on the Line Still Undecided.

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen once again fielded questions this week about the future of right tackle Evan Neal. When asked whether Neal could shift to guard—a position he played as a freshman at Alabama—Schoen kept things vague.

“He’s going to do whatever he can to help the organization,” Schoen said. “He’s motivated, he’s had a good offseason, he’s working hard.”

Translation: The team still isn’t sure where Neal fits best.

Fifth-Year Option Appears Unlikely.

It’s becoming increasingly unlikely the Giants will pick up Neal’s fifth-year option. Locking him in for 2026 would mean a guaranteed $16.7 million, and that’s a hefty price for a player who has underperformed and struggled to stay healthy.

Schoen confirmed no decision has been made, but the signs aren’t promising. When a team brings in a free agent like Jermaine Eluemunor and pays him to take over your position, it’s never a great endorsement.

Neal’s Injuries Have Stalled His Growth.

Drafted No. 7 overall in 2022 after a standout college career at Alabama, Neal’s NFL run has been rocky. He’s missed 22 of 44 regular-season games due to injury, including 10 in 2023 alone. He had ankle surgery in early 2024 and started the year behind Eluemunor on the depth chart.

Neal did return to the starting lineup in November after Andrew Thomas went down, but he’ll need a strong, healthy season to reshape the narrative.

Time Running Out to Prove Himself.

Neal is entering a critical year. The Giants need answers, and fast. Whether he stays at tackle or moves inside, his performance in 2025 will likely determine whether he remains part of the long-term plan.

Right now, it feels like a long shot that the team commits $16.7 million to a player who hasn’t delivered consistent results.

Offensive Struggles Continue.

The New York Giants’ quarterback room is the weakest in the league. While quarterback play isn’t the sole can I have a few options , it’s one of the biggest. Drew Lock, once a candidate for QB1 in Week 1, couldn’t even secure a win against a lackluster Dallas team. Lock showed slightly better mobility than Tommy DeVito but still fell short. Lock led the team in rushing with 57 yards, highlighting the offensive woes.

The Giants’ offensive line is another glaring issue. Without Andrew Thomas and Jermaine Eluemunor, the line crumbled. Earlier this season, the line was at least serviceable. Against Dallas, it was downright abysmal. The Cowboys’ defense dominated, exposing the line’s vulnerabilities.

Defensive Failures Persist.

Missed tackles remain a constant problem for the Giants. Rico Dowdle, a relatively unknown player, recorded his first career 100-yard rushing game. The Giants’ run defense simply couldn’t contain him. Meanwhile, the pass rush was nonexistent, failing to register a single sack or even touch Cooper Rush.

Special Teams Show No Spark.

Graham Gano converted two field goals and both extra points, but special teams’ contributions ended there. The Giants’ kick and punt return units offered no meaningful production, continuing a season-long trend.

A Grim Outlook.

The Giants’ Thanksgiving struggles are well-documented. They haven’t won a Thanksgiving game since 1982 and are now 0-3 against the Cowboys on the holiday. At AT&T Stadium, their losing streak stretches back to Week 1 of 2016, with an 0-8 record since then.

Looking ahead, John Mara’s frustration in the press box was palpable. Changes could be imminent, and Black Friday might signal firings. With five games left, the Giants’ chances of winning another game appear bleak. The race for the No. 1 overall pick is on, a spot the Giants haven’t held since 1965. Could history repeat 60 years later?

The Giants’ offense looked lifeless. With just 245 total yards and seven points, it’s clear they couldn’t match Tampa Bay’s defensive intensity. Jermaine Eluemunor’s exit during the game didn’t help the offensive line, which was outclassed throughout the contest. The Giants’ offensive woes at home continue to haunt them.

The Defense Falls Flat

The Buccaneers offense moved the ball at will, exposing the Giants’ defensive vulnerabilities. The Giants managed zero sacks against Baker Mayfield, a disappointing statistic for a team that once led the league in sacks.

Tampa Bay’s offensive success highlighted how far the Giants’ defense has fallen. At times, it seemed as though they couldn’t have stopped a college team, let alone an NFL opponent.

Special Teams and Future Outlook

Special teams offered no relief for the Giants. The kick and punt return units have struggled all season, and Sunday’s game was no exception. The Giants failed in all three phases of the game.

With just 60 points scored in six home games, the Giants’ offense ranks dead last in the league. Their 0-6 record at MetLife Stadium raises doubts about whether they’ll secure a home win this season.

The Giants face a short turnaround with a Thanksgiving Day matchup against the Cowboys. With a 2-10 record looming, draft pick watch is officially underway. Fans are left wondering if brighter days are ahead for this struggling team.

The New York Giants fell 10-6 to the New York Jets in their preseason finale. The game highlighted some significant concerns as the team prepares for the regular season.

DeVito Struggles, but Still Has a Chance.

Tommy DeVito struggled against the Jets’ backups, completing only 14 of 27 passes for 103 yards and getting sacked eight times. Despite these struggles, he led the team in rushing with 48 yards. With Daniel Jones’ injury history and Drew Lock currently sidelined, DeVito could still make the roster. However, if the Giants decide to part ways with him, it wouldn’t be surprising.

Evan Neal’s Rough Return.

Evan Neal’s return from the PUP List didn’t go as planned. Although he started off solid, his performance quickly declined. Neal allowed several sacks, looking like his old self rather than someone ready to reclaim his spot. It seems Jermaine Eluemunor is set to be the Giants’ right tackle going forward.

Bubble Players Face Uncertainty

Isaiah Hodgins’ roster spot is in jeopardy, and after tonight’s performance, it wouldn’t be shocking if he gets cut. The Giants’ defense also struggled with missed tackles, which could lead to many bubble players being released. However, K.J. Cloyd made a strong case for himself with 16 tackles, including eight solo and two for a loss.

Preparing for the Regular Season.

With preseason over, the focus shifts to the regular season opener against the Vikings on September 8th. The Giants will be monitoring waiver cuts and exploring potential trades, with needs at cornerback, backup offensive line, and possibly a young quarterback. Cutdown day is Tuesday, August 27th, when rosters must be trimmed to 53 players by 4 PM EST.

• RT: Jermaine Eluemunor

This lineup brings a mix of experience and youth, aiming to solidify the Giants’ offensive front. Andrew Thomas continues to anchor the line, while Jon Runyan Jr. adds reliability at left guard. John Michael Schmitz, returns for his 2nd year at center. The veteran presence of Greg Van Roten at right guard will provide stability, and Jermaine Eluemunor rounds out the group at right tackle. This combination should give our quarterback the protection needed and open up running lanes for our backs.

The 2024 NFL season is fast approaching, and Giants fans are buzzing with excitement. With training camp set to kicking off on July 24th for the veteran players, let’s dive into the Giants’ Offensive line room as the team gears up for camp.

Andrew Thomas

Andrew Thomas is among the top offensive linemen in the NFL. Despite a freak hamstring injury sidelining him for seven games last season, he remains a cornerstone of the Giants’ offense.

After returning to the field, Thomas quickly regained his dominant form. The 6-foot-5 tackle allowed only four sacks and 17 total pressures on 376 pass-blocking snaps. Impressively, he gave up just one sack and six pressures in the final five games of the season. His performance earned him Pro Football Focus’ 10th-highest pass block grade among all offensive tackles in 2023.

Bottom line: if Thomas stays healthy, he’ll perform as one of the best left tackles in football. This will significantly boost the Giants’ offensive line, making it much better than the 2023 group.

John Michael Schmitz

Center John Michael Schmitz Jr., heading into his second season, has the potential to transform the Giants’ O-Line. Despite his lackluster rookie performance, there’s reason for optimism due to his leadership, intangibles, and physical abilities.

Schmitz was widely regarded as the best center in the draft and immediately secured a starting spot. He will remain the starting center this season. Schmitz should improve in Year 2, especially with more stability on both sides of him, new coaching, and additional opportunities.

Evan Neal

It’s hard to sugarcoat Neal’s performance so far; he’s been a first-round disappointment through his first two NFL seasons. However, with new offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo in charge, there’s hope he can develop Neal, a task former O-line coach Bobby Johnson struggled with.

With veterans reporting for camp and the first practice session of the summer approaching, the Giants have released their initial injury report. Unfortunately, Neal has been placed on the PUP list to start. The former No. 7 overall pick is still recovering from winter ankle surgery and is clearly not ready for full participation in practice.

Jon Runyan 

Runyan spent the 2023 season with the Green Bay Packers, finishing the final year of his rookie contract after being a sixth-round pick in 2020. Over his 1,009 snaps, he earned a run-blocking grade of 53.2 and a pass-blocking grade of 62.4.

Runyan was one of the Giants’ best signings this offseason, securing a three-year contract worth $30 million and is almost certain to start at guard. I anticipate he will make a significant impact on the Giants in 2024, especially with the addition of Coach Bricillo and the moves made on the offensive line.

Jermaine Eluemunor

Many fans see Eluemunor, who followed his former offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo from Las Vegas to New York, as a clear replacement for Evan Neal if Neal struggles this season. He has started games at both left and right guard and became the full-time starter at right tackle over the last two seasons with the Raiders. 

The belief has always been that the Giants would not move Eluemunor to right tackle, but with Evan Neal on the PUP list, that has changed. The Giants hoped to stabilize an offensive line that was in flux for most of last season, but now there are renewed questions about how the line will shape up at the start of the 2024 season.

Joshua Ezeudu

A 2022 third-round pick, Ezeudu boasts impressive athleticism, mobility, and strength—qualities that are highly sought after in an offensive lineman. However, Ezeudu’s biggest challenge through his first two seasons has been his technical skills. He has struggled with consistency in his technique and, at times, with maintaining his confidence.

The Giants seem to be taking a step back with Ezeudu to allow him to develop his game. Hopefully, he can grow and benefit from the better talent that has been brought in.

Aaron Stinnie

Former Buccaneers guard Aaron Stinnie brings veteran starting experience to the table and is set to compete as one of the primary backup options along the offensive line. His experience and skills make him a valuable asset for depth and versatility, potentially stepping in when needed to support the line’s performance throughout the season.

Austin Schlottmann

The New York Giants have demonstrated a strong preference for versatile linemen who can fill multiple roles along the starting front. In his two NFL tenures, Schlottmann initially played 449 snaps at right guard for the Denver Broncos before being moved to the practice squad for most of the 2021 season. He then joined the Minnesota Vikings, where he served as a rotational center.

Schlottmann will need to compete fiercely for a depth spot on the Giants’ roster.

Matt Nelson

Matt Nelson was one of five offensive linemen the New York Giants signed in free agency this offseason. After playing defensive end at Iowa, Nelson signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent in 2019. Although he was initially cut at the end of training camp, he was re-signed by the Lions in mid-December.

From 2020 to 2023, Nelson appeared in 43 games with 14 starts for the Lions. He could potentially emerge as the Giants’ swing tackle.

Marcus McKethan

The Giants selected McKethan in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 173rd overall, with the intention of developing him as a guard. Unfortunately, his progress was interrupted by a season-ending torn ACL sustained during the 2022 Blue and White Scrimmage at MetLife Stadium.

Due to his limited practice reps—none with the starters during training camp—McKethan’s performance fell short of expectations. He started five games and had significant playing time in a sixth, but his impact was underwhelming. McKethan will need to make a strong impression to secure a backup position.

The Others

There may be some additions to the practice squad, including Jake Kubas, Jimmy Morrissey, Jalen Mayfield, Yodny Cajuste, Marcellus Johnson, and Joshua Miles. Most of these players seem to be on the outside looking in and will need to demonstrate their potential to remain with the Giants.
