The New York Giants recently announced that legendary nose tackle Jim Burt has been named the 64th greatest player in franchise history. Burt, a key member of the Giants’ famous 1986 defense, was known for his strength and determination.

The 1986 Giants’ defense, which was pivotal in their first Super Bowl win, was anchored by Jim Burt. Playing alongside Hall of Famers like Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson, Burt’s role as nose tackle helped limit opponents to just 80.3 rushing yards per game.

This defense dominated the NFL, forcing teams to pass the ball—only to face relentless pressure from Lawrence Taylor and Carl Banks. Taylor, in particular, led the league with 20.5 sacks and earned MVP honors. Jim Burt’s presence in the middle of the defense made a lasting impact on the franchise.

Jim Burt is also credited with starting the famous Gatorade shower tradition. During the 1985 season, Burt and Carson decided to drench Coach Bill Parcells after a big win. Although unnoticed at the time, the tradition gained momentum during the 1986 season as the Giants kept winning. The showers became an iconic celebration, forever linked to the Giants’ success.

Burt’s legacy with the Giants will always be remembered for his toughness, leadership, and contributions to their 1986 championship.
