The New York Giants suffered a significant loss on the field when wide receiver Sterling Shepard was sidelined for the season with a torn ACL in Week 3, but his presence as a leader in the locker room is getting high praise. 

Shepard who is the longest tenured Giant is one of the few remaining players along with Landon Collins from the Jerry Reese era, and now earning a new roll on the team. Since his season ending injury, Shepard has become a locker room, leader and hype man.

“He’s one of the better leaders that I’ve been around, very selfless. I wouldn’t know how he feels. Certainly, I believe that he wishes he could play. But he comes out here with a great attitude. He’s our music guy. So, he’s been great. Very fortunate for him to be here.” said Giants Head Coach Brian Daboll.

His teammates are also applications the love. “It’s like your big brother or your little brother, whatever it may be. Whoever’s older, whoever’s younger, they’re always supporting their brother. And I feel like that’s like a true brother, a genuine guy. And regardless of his situation, he still got our backs 100 percent, cheering us on. That’s an ideal teammate, locker mate.” added Giants Adoree Jackson.

Although he is unable to play, Sterling Shepard’s presence has been felt throughout the sidelines and seems to be enjoying this run.

]]> It’s been another quiet week so far in Giants’ sphere. The biggest story which we covered last week has been surrounding OBJ. There have been more and more rumors coming out about the Patriots ‘actively’ trying to acquire Odell. You can check out my opinion on Odell Beckham trade rumors.

Landon Collins

Another attention grabber out this week is surrounding safety Landon Collins. Collins is set to become a free agent March 5th if the Giants don’t come to a long term deal or use the franchise tag on him. Reports are saying the franchise tag on a safety this season would be in the ballpark of 12 Million or so. Odds are the Giants will reach a long term deal with Collins who has cemented himself as a leader in the secondary.

Rumors have been swirling about the possibility of releasing OV to free up cap space. If that was the case the Giants would save 11 Million of the 19.5 Million he’s owed this year, leaving 8.5 Million as dead cap space.

PFF released the grades on the Giants defense and interestingly enough, OV was the highest rated player despite missing a significant part of the first half of the season.

In regards to OV I think the best bet for the Giants would be to keep him and if anything request a pay cut. He has already stated that he would like to come back for the final year of his contract which makes it seem likely that  he would entertain the idea of taking the cut to benefit the team as a whole. I also don’t see the sense in creating another hole in positions that we don’t have much depth at. (DE/OLB)

Coaching updates

First year DB Coach Lou Anarumo will be interviewing for the defensive coordinator for the Bengals and is considered to be a prime candidate for the position. Anarumo has a history with Bengals HC Zac Taylor; that history is the factor that is expected to land him the job.

Today is the first day teams can apply the franchise tag. The important date to keep in mind is March 5, which is the last day to apply the tag. When the Giants tagged JPP two years ago they did so two days before the deadline.

The projected tag for safeties is $11.256M per @
Albert Breer. Giants history suggests they’ll give Landon Collins the non-exclusive tag close to the deadline before agreeing to a long-term deal early in the new league year (mid-March).

]]> We’re keeping Eli? It seems so. Reports are out claiming that Gettleman’s review of Eli Manning’s 2018 performance indicate that the Giants are going to keep him going into the final year of his contract. What does this mean? This points to the Giants likely drafting a quarterback in the first round. Currently we’re sitting at the 6th overall pick in the first round. 

In connection with this rumor is another rumor that the Giants have contacted the Arizona Cardinals in order to trade up in order to get Dwayne Haskins (Who the Giants are “in love with”). Unfortunately, there is very little sustenance to either of these rumors. If this is indeed fact, what would that mean for us? Let’s consider a few possible options in this draft scenario. 1. We forfeit our 1st round pick next season 2. We give up a key player

Let’s consider that first scenario. This upcoming draft class has already been called “quarterback lean”. Many of the scouting pros have already said that none of the quarterbacks that have declared for the draft thus far are day one starters. Many of those same scouts and analysts are predicting next year to be a much stronger draft class. Do we risk a pick on potential talent and forfeit an opportunity next year?

Now let’s look at that second scenario; giving up a key player, or first round talent. The two names that immediately pop into my head are Landon Collins and Odell Beckham Jr. Both are key players on each side of the ball and have established themselves as stars on the Giants. Again, can we afford to risk such talent for potential?

In my opinion, we have time. Eli is by no means what he was but he did get in stride near the end of the season. I believe we need to see what’s available at the 6th pick. If a 1st round caliber quarterback is available, then take him. If not, we have other holes throughout the team that need to be plugged. Our offensive line needs to be fixed up. We were able to get Nate Solder in free agency but it doesn’t seem as though it was the fix that we absolutely needed. Eli manning was still sacked 47 times, 6th most in the NFL this season. Our pass rush is also an area that we need to further develop.
