When the New York Giants selected Jalin Hyatt in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, many fans believed they had found the deep threat the offense desperately needed. Hyatt arrived in New York with blazing speed and plenty of upside after an explosive college career at Tennessee.

Fast forward to today, and the conversation has changed dramatically. With reports from Dan Duggan suggesting Hyatt could be fighting for his roster spot, it feels like the Giants are approaching a crossroads with one of their most intriguing draft picks in recent years.

A Player Who Never Found His Role

The expectation was never that Hyatt would develop into the Giants’ No. 1 receiver. Instead, he was drafted to stretch defenses, create explosive plays, and force opposing secondaries to respect his speed. On paper, it seemed like a perfect fit for an offense searching for more explosiveness.

Unfortunately, that vision never became reality. Despite possessing elite speed, Hyatt struggled to earn consistent playing time, even when injuries decimated the Giants’ receiving corps. Week after week, other receivers were called upon while Hyatt remained on the sideline, raising questions about how the coaching staff viewed his development.

More Than Just Speed

Speed can get a player drafted, but it doesn’t guarantee snaps on Sundays. To earn a consistent role, receivers must understand the playbook, run precise routes, block when asked, and build trust with their quarterbacks and coaches.

Reports have suggested Hyatt struggled in some of those areas, particularly with mastering the offense. Whether those reports are entirely fair or not, the reality is that the coaching staff never seemed comfortable expanding his role beyond being a situational deep threat. Even then, those opportunities became increasingly rare.

A Tougher Road to the Roster

The timing couldn’t be worse for Hyatt. The Giants enter training camp with significantly more competition at wide receiver than they’ve had in recent seasons, leaving very little room for players who haven’t established themselves.

Malik Nabers remains the centerpiece of the passing game, while veterans such as Odell Beckham Jr., Darnell Mooney, and Darius Slayton bring proven NFL production. Calvin Austin adds another speed element, and rookie Malachi Fields offers intriguing size and upside. Hyatt is no longer competing on potential alone—he has to prove he belongs.

Let Training Camp Decide

If the Giants ultimately decide to move on from Hyatt, it should happen after training camp and not before. Every player deserves the opportunity to compete, especially someone with Hyatt’s athletic ability and draft pedigree.

Training camp gives him one final chance to show he’s improved, earned the coaches’ trust, and deserves a place on the roster. If he takes advantage of that opportunity, he could still carve out a meaningful role. If not, it may simply confirm that the fit between Hyatt and the Giants never worked the way either side had hoped.

Sometimes, a fresh start benefits everyone involved.

Final Thoughts

Jalin Hyatt entered the league with plenty of promise, but three seasons later, the production has never matched the expectations. His speed remains intriguing, yet the Giants need receivers they can trust in every situation—not just on the occasional deep route.

Training camp could very well determine Hyatt’s future in New York. Whether he earns another opportunity or the Giants decide it’s time to move on, the next few weeks may define the next chapter of his NFL career.

The New York Giants are hoping Malik Nabers is ready for Week 1, but his recovery from last season’s injury remains one of the biggest storylines heading into training camp. While everyone wants to see him back on the field as soon as possible, it’s fair to ask an important question: Can the New York Giants win without Malik Nabers if he misses the start of the season?

That was the topic of discussion on a recent Bleed Big Blue Podcast, where we debated whether the Giants have enough talent at wide receiver to remain competitive if their biggest offensive weapon isn’t available.

The Giants Are Better Equipped Than They Were Last Year

Last season, when Nabers went down with his injury, the Giants simply didn’t have enough proven playmakers at wide receiver. The offense struggled to replace his production, and the team was already dealing with a difficult season.

This offseason, however, the front office made improving the supporting cast a priority.

The current wide receiver room includes:

• Odell Beckham Jr.
• Darnell Mooney
• Darius Slayton
• Calvin Austin
• Malachi Fields

No one player can replace what Malik Nabers brings to the offense. He’s the receiver opposing defenses game plan around and the player capable of changing a game with one touch.

What this group does provide, though, is significantly more depth than the Giants had a year ago.

Who Needs to Step Up?

If Nabers misses time, everyone in the receiving room becomes more important.

Veterans like Odell Beckham Jr., Darnell Mooney, and Darius Slayton have all proven they can make plays in the NFL. Calvin Austin adds game-breaking speed, while rookie Malachi Fields has an opportunity to carve out a role early in his career if he’s ready.

The Giants don’t need one receiver to become Malik Nabers.

They need several players to elevate their games and make meaningful contributions until their star receiver returns.

Winning Without Nabers Will Take a Team Effort

Wide receiver depth is only part of the equation.

If Malik Nabers isn’t on the field, the Giants will likely lean even more on their running game to keep the offense balanced. Sustaining drives, protecting the football, and playing complementary football become even more important.

The offense won’t be asked to replace Nabers with one player. Instead, it will require contributions from the entire roster, including the receivers, running backs, tight ends, offensive line, and quarterback.

That’s where the improved depth could make all the difference.

The Bottom Line

The New York Giants are unquestionably a better football team with Malik Nabers on the field. He’s one of the NFL’s most dynamic young playmakers and the focal point of the passing attack.

But if his recovery causes him to miss games early in the season, this roster is better prepared than it was a year ago. The additions of Odell Beckham Jr., Darnell Mooney, along with the continued development of Darius Slayton, Calvin Austin, and rookie Malachi Fields, give the Giants more legitimate options than they had last season.

Can the New York Giants win without Malik Nabers?

The New York Giants open the 2026 season against the Dallas Cowboys, and naturally everyone wants to see Malik Nabers on the field.

But if he’s not 100 percent healthy, I think the Giants need to be patient.

I’m not saying Nabers won’t be ready. He very well could be. But if he’s only 80 or 90 percent, I don’t think it’s worth taking the risk. It’s Week 1 of a long season, not the playoffs. As exciting as opening against a division rival is, the Giants have to think bigger than one game.

Sometimes the Best Move Is Waiting

Dallas is always an important matchup, but the Giants play them twice every year. They know each other well, and they’ll have another opportunity later in the season.

If holding Nabers out for one more week means he’s fully healthy for the next four months, that’s an easy decision for me.

We’ve seen too many examples across sports where teams rush star players back only to watch them suffer another injury. During our discussion, we talked about similar situations in other sports where organizations prioritized the short term instead of the long-term health of their star players.

The Giants simply can’t afford to make that mistake with their franchise wide receiver.

This Season Is Bigger Than Week 1

One reason I’d be cautious is because I actually believe this Giants team has a chance to surprise people.

I’ve said before that I think this team can win somewhere between eight and ten games if things break their way. If that’s the expectation, then protecting one of your most important players becomes even more important.

There’s no sense jeopardizing the next 16 games just to force him onto the field for the first one.

If he’s healthy, great. Play him.

If not, let him heal.

Odell Beckham Jr. Gives the Giants Another Option

Since we recorded the podcast, the Giants officially signed Odell Beckham Jr., and I think there’s a very good chance he makes the final 53-man roster.

No, this isn’t the same Odell who took the league by storm as a rookie, and nobody should expect that version to return. But he doesn’t have to be that player to help this team.

If Malik Nabers isn’t ready for Week 1, having a veteran like Odell gives the Giants another capable receiver who understands the spotlight and can still contribute. That’s exactly why bringing him back made sense to me. He can help bridge the gap while Nabers gets back to full strength instead of forcing your young star onto the field before he’s ready.

And honestly, I’d love nothing more than to see Odell come back in a Giants uniform and torch the Cowboys in Week 1. That would be a pretty special way to begin the season. But even if that doesn’t happen, simply having another experienced playmaker available gives the Giants some flexibility and allows them to be patient with Malik Nabers’ recovery.

Final Thoughts

Every Giants fan wants to beat Dallas to open the season. There’s no question about that.

But this season is about much more than one game.

If Malik Nabers is completely healthy, put him on the field and let him go to work.

If he isn’t, the smart move is to wait.

The Giants believe they’ve built a team that can compete this season. Protecting one of the biggest pieces of that future is the right decision, even if it means waiting one more week.

At the end of the day, I’d rather have Malik Nabers available for 16 or 17 games than rush him back for one and risk losing him again. That’s the bigger picture the Giants need to keep in mind.

The New York Giants have one of the biggest question marks on the roster at wide receiver. There’s some intriguing talent in the room, but outside of a few veterans, it’s largely an unproven group.

That makes training camp one of the most interesting position battles to watch this summer. During a recent episode of the Bleed Big Blue Podcast, we broke down who we think makes the final 53-man roster. Since recording, a few things have changed, including the return of Odell Beckham Jr., which definitely changes the outlook.

Odell Beckham Jr. Changes My Prediction

When we recorded the podcast, Odell Beckham Jr. hadn’t signed with the Giants. Now that he’s back in blue, I think he earns one of the six wide receiver spots.

The Giants didn’t bring Beckham back just for the headlines. If he’s healthy, I expect him to make the final 53-man roster and give this young group another veteran presence.

His signing makes the competition even tougher for everyone else!

Is Malik Nabers Ready for Week 1?

One storyline I’ll continue to watch is Malik Nabers’ recovery.

Personally, I don’t think he’ll be ready for Week 1. That’s just my opinion based on where things stand today.

The good news is the Giants don’t have to rush him back. This coaching staff can afford to be patient and make sure he’s fully healthy before putting him back on the field.

What Happens to Jalin Hyatt?

Jalin Hyatt enters one of the biggest training camps of his career.

I said on the podcast that unless he has an outstanding preseason, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Giants look to move him before roster cutdowns.

The talent has always been there, but we’re entering Year 4 and he still hasn’t carved out a consistent role. At some point, potential has to turn into production.

Braxton Berrios Benefits From Gunner Olszewski’s Injury

Another thing that’s changed since we recorded the show is Gunner Olszewski’s season-ending injury.

Before the injury, Gunner’s biggest value came on special teams as a return specialist. With him now out for the season, I think Braxton Berrios slides right into that role while also giving the Giants depth at wide receiver.

Special teams often determine the final roster spots, and Berrios checks that box.

Final Thoughts on the Giants’ Wide Receiver Room

John Harbaugh has made it clear that roster spots are going to be earned, not handed out.

I don’t think this is a deep wide receiver room. I think it’s an unproven one.

There’s talent here, but there are still plenty of questions. Can Malik Nabers get back to full strength? Can Malachi Fields contribute right away? Does Odell Beckham Jr. still have something left? Can Darnell Mooney bounce back? Those are all legitimate questions that won’t be answered until training camp and the preseason.

The good news is the Giants have competition at the position, and that’s something they haven’t always had. By the end of camp, we’ll know if this group exceeded expectations or if wide receiver is still a position that needs to be addressed moving forward.

With only one or two spots potentially available at the bottom of the receiver depth chart, the preseason could play a major role in determining who makes the final 53-man roster.

Why JuJu Smith-Schuster Stands Out

If we’re being honest, JuJu Smith-Schuster might be the most intriguing player in this competition.

While Beckham’s reunion with the Giants has generated plenty of headlines and excitement among fans, Smith-Schuster brings a different set of advantages that could appeal to the coaching staff.

For starters, JuJu has been in the NFL for several years but is still under 30 years old. He offers veteran experience without being at the end of his career, making him an interesting blend of experience and upside.

Special Teams Could Be the Difference

One of the biggest factors in determining the final roster spots is often special teams.

Smith-Schuster has shown a willingness to contribute in multiple phases of the game, something that can significantly improve a player’s chances of making the team. For players competing for depth roles, versatility is often just as important as production at wide receiver.

That’s where JuJu may have an advantage over some of the other veterans competing for roster spots.

Familiarity With the Offensive System

Another factor working in Smith-Schuster’s favor is his familiarity with the offensive system.

After spending last season in Matt Nagy’s offense, JuJu enters camp with experience in similar concepts and terminology. That familiarity could help shorten his adjustment period and allow him to contribute sooner than some of his competitors.

For a coaching staff looking for reliable veterans who can quickly execute the offense, that experience shouldn’t be overlooked.

Why the Competition May Be Tighter Than Expected

Another factor worth considering is that Braxton Berrios appears to have a strong path to the final 53-man roster.

Following the season-ending injury to Gunner Olszewski, Berrios is expected to handle both kick and punt return duties, giving him significant value on special teams. That could leave even fewer openings for receivers competing for depth roles, making the battle between veterans such as JuJu Smith-Schuster and Odell Beckham Jr. even more interesting.

The Giants are also monitoring the recovery of star wide receiver Malik Nabers, who is still working his way back from ACL surgery. While the organization remains hopeful, many believe his availability for the start of the season remains uncertain.

If Nabers is unavailable or eased back into action early in the season, the Giants may elect to keep additional depth at wide receiver. That scenario could improve the odds for players like Smith-Schuster, but it also means every preseason snap and special teams rep will carry even greater importance.

The Bigger Question: Will Darius Slayton Be Ready?

Odell Beckham Jr. brings familiarity and star power. Braxton Berrios offers versatility and return value. But JuJu Smith-Schuster may be the player who quietly checks the most boxes for the coaching staff.

Between his age, experience, willingness to contribute on special teams, and familiarity with offensive concepts, Smith-Schuster could emerge as a legitimate contender to make the Giants’ final roster.

The veteran wide receiver has agreed to a one-year deal with the Giants, returning to New York for a second stint with the organization.

A reunion between Beckham and the New Giants had been anticipated throughout the offseason. The 33-year-old generated plenty of buzz after appearing at the Fanatics Football Classic in March and meeting with Giants head coach John Harbaugh during the NFL Annual League Meeting, fueling speculation about a possible return.

Beckham first worked out for the Giants on April 20 as the team evaluated him as a potential complement to Malik Nabers in the receiving corps. He returned for a second workout on Monday following the season-ending Achilles injury to Gunner Olszewski.

Last season, Beckham appeared in nine games with the Miami Dolphins, totaling 55 receiving yards. In 2023, he enjoyed a productive season with the Baltimore Ravens, recording 565 receiving yards while averaging 16.1 yards per reception.

From my perspective, this is exactly the type of move the Giants should be making. I’ve always been a big fan of Beckham and have been in favor of bringing him back. At this stage of his career, the signing carries very little risk and offers the potential for a meaningful reward if he can still contribute.

Making the final 53-man roster won’t be easy, but it would be surprising to see the Giants bring Beckham in only to move on from him a few weeks later. The timing of the signing is also notable given the current state of the wide receiver room. While Darius Slayton is expected to be ready for the start of the season, Malik Nabers is likely to miss at least a few weeks as he continues to recover.

If Beckham can show he still has something left in the tank during training camp and the preseason, he could carve out a role and provide valuable depth, experience, and playmaking ability for a receiving corps dealing with early injury concerns.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal is worth three years and $40 million, including $26 million guaranteed, with incentives that could increase the total value to $47.5 million. The contract makes Likely one of the highest-paid tight ends in the NFL and underscores how highly the Giants value his versatility.

For Giants fans, this signing is about more than adding talent at tight end. It continues Harbaugh’s strategy of bringing in players he knows, trusts, and believes fit the culture he is establishing in New York.

A Familiar Face for John Harbaugh

Harbaugh coached Likely throughout his first four NFL seasons after the Ravens selected him in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

That familiarity should help make the transition to New York a smooth one. Likely already understands Harbaugh’s expectations and now gives Jaxson Dart another reliable target in the passing game.

With Malik Nabers continuing his recovery after an injury that sidelined him for most of the 2025 season, adding another offensive weapon became an important priority this offseason. Likely has the athleticism to create mismatches while complementing the Giants’ receiving corps once Nabers returns to full strength.

Why the Giants Believe in Isaiah Likely

At just 25 years old, Likely is still entering the prime of his career.

Although he is coming off his least productive NFL season, injuries played a significant role. A small fracture in his right foot forced him to miss the first three games of the season, and he finished with:

• 27 receptions
• 307 receiving yards
• 1 touchdown

Rather than focusing on those numbers alone, the Giants are betting on the upside he displayed during his first three seasons in Baltimore.

Over four NFL seasons, Likely has appeared in 63 regular-season games, recording:

• 135 receptions
• 1,568 receiving yards
• 15 receiving touchdowns

His breakout came in 2024 when he caught a career-high six touchdown passes and became the second-fastest tight end in Ravens history to reach 10 career receiving touchdowns, trailing only Mark Andrews.

How Isaiah Likely Fits the New York Giants Offense

Likely’s versatility is one of the biggest reasons this signing makes sense.

He can line up as a traditional in-line tight end, flex into the slot, or move around the formation to exploit favorable matchups against linebackers and safeties. That flexibility should allow offensive coordinator Matt Nagy to be creative while giving Jaxson Dart a dependable option over the middle of the field and in the red zone.

When Malik Nabers returns to full health, the Giants could feature one of the more intriguing collections of young offensive talent in the NFC, with Nabers stretching defenses on the outside and Likely controlling the middle of the field.

Proven Success in Baltimore

Likely arrives from one of the NFL’s most explosive offenses.

In 2024, Baltimore’s tight ends combined for an NFL-leading 18 receiving touchdowns. The Ravens also finished:

• No. 1 in the NFL in yards per game (424.9)
• No. 1 in rushing yards per attempt (5.7)
• No. 1 in red-zone efficiency (74.2%)
• No. 3 in scoring offense (30.5 points per game)

Baltimore also set a franchise record with 7,224 total offensive yards, showing just how productive Harbaugh’s offensive system can be with the right personnel.

Final Thoughts

The Giants aren’t signing Isaiah Likely because of one injury-affected season. They’re investing in a talented, ascending tight end who already understands John Harbaugh’s culture and has proven he can make an impact in a winning offense.

At just 25 years old, Likely gives Jaxson Dart another dependable target while adding versatility to the offense. If he returns to the form he displayed in Baltimore before last season’s injury, this signing has the potential to become one of the best values of the Giants’ 2026 offseason.
