The New York Giants have one of the biggest question marks on the roster at wide receiver. There’s some intriguing talent in the room, but outside of a few veterans, it’s largely an unproven group.

That makes training camp one of the most interesting position battles to watch this summer. During a recent episode of the Bleed Big Blue Podcast, we broke down who we think makes the final 53-man roster. Since recording, a few things have changed, including the return of Odell Beckham Jr., which definitely changes the outlook.

Odell Beckham Jr. Changes My Prediction

When we recorded the podcast, Odell Beckham Jr. hadn’t signed with the Giants. Now that he’s back in blue, I think he earns one of the six wide receiver spots.

The Giants didn’t bring Beckham back just for the headlines. If he’s healthy, I expect him to make the final 53-man roster and give this young group another veteran presence.

His signing makes the competition even tougher for everyone else!

Is Malik Nabers Ready for Week 1?

One storyline I’ll continue to watch is Malik Nabers’ recovery.

Personally, I don’t think he’ll be ready for Week 1. That’s just my opinion based on where things stand today.

The good news is the Giants don’t have to rush him back. This coaching staff can afford to be patient and make sure he’s fully healthy before putting him back on the field.

What Happens to Jalin Hyatt?

Jalin Hyatt enters one of the biggest training camps of his career.

I said on the podcast that unless he has an outstanding preseason, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Giants look to move him before roster cutdowns.

The talent has always been there, but we’re entering Year 4 and he still hasn’t carved out a consistent role. At some point, potential has to turn into production.

Braxton Berrios Benefits From Gunner Olszewski’s Injury

Another thing that’s changed since we recorded the show is Gunner Olszewski’s season-ending injury.

Before the injury, Gunner’s biggest value came on special teams as a return specialist. With him now out for the season, I think Braxton Berrios slides right into that role while also giving the Giants depth at wide receiver.

Special teams often determine the final roster spots, and Berrios checks that box.

Final Thoughts on the Giants’ Wide Receiver Room

John Harbaugh has made it clear that roster spots are going to be earned, not handed out.

I don’t think this is a deep wide receiver room. I think it’s an unproven one.

There’s talent here, but there are still plenty of questions. Can Malik Nabers get back to full strength? Can Malachi Fields contribute right away? Does Odell Beckham Jr. still have something left? Can Darnell Mooney bounce back? Those are all legitimate questions that won’t be answered until training camp and the preseason.

The good news is the Giants have competition at the position, and that’s something they haven’t always had. By the end of camp, we’ll know if this group exceeded expectations or if wide receiver is still a position that needs to be addressed moving forward.

The return of Odell Beckham Jr. to the New York Giants has already created plenty of headlines, but one recent comment from Beckham may have sparked an even bigger debate among fans.

During a recent media session, Beckham claimed that after Brian Daboll was fired, someone from the Giants organization reached out to him and asked for his thoughts on who the team’s next head coach should be.

The statement immediately raised eyebrows.

Did It Actually Happen?

While Beckham didn’t specify exactly who contacted him, he suggested that someone connected to the Giants front office or ownership group sought his opinion during the coaching search process.

That claim has led to plenty of speculation, but there’s also reason to be skeptical.

If true, it would be an unusual move for an NFL franchise. Coaching searches are typically handled by ownership, general managers, team executives, and professional consultants. While organizations often gather feedback from current players, former players are rarely involved in meaningful decision-making regarding a head coaching hire.

Why Some Giants Fans Aren’t Buying It

The biggest issue is the lack of details.

Beckham didn’t name the individual who contacted him or explain the context of the conversation. Without specifics, the statement leaves a lot open to interpretation.

For all anyone knows, the conversation could have been completely informal.

A casual “Who do you like?” from someone associated with the organization is very different from ownership genuinely seeking Beckham’s input on a major franchise decision.

That’s why many fans are questioning the story.

The More Likely Scenario

The most likely explanation is that someone connected to the Giants casually asked Beckham for his thoughts, and the conversation has grown into something bigger than it actually was.

It was probably a current player asking about John Harbaugh, who was widely viewed as the front-runner by miles at the time, rather than anyone formally seeking Beckham’s advice on the coaching search.

Without additional details, it’s impossible to know whether this was a serious consultation or simply an informal discussion.

Either way, Beckham’s comments have given Giants fans yet another offseason topic to debate.

Final Thoughts

Odell Beckham Jr. has never been shy about sharing his opinions, and that’s part of what makes him such an interesting figure in Giants history.

But unless more details emerge, this story feels like one that requires a healthy dose of skepticism.

After all, when someone says a person from “the Giants organization” called them, that could mean almost anyone.

And that’s exactly why many fans aren’t buying it.

Heading into the Draft, I Had Other Names in Mind.

With the NFL Draft just around the corner, I couldn’t help but think back to 2014—a bold move that changed the Giants’ offense. It’s Throwback Thursday, and today we’re looking at when the Giants drafted wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. with the 12th overall pick.

Honestly, I was surprised. Odell felt a bit undersized to be a true WR1, and I wasn’t convinced he’d be the right fit for Eli Manning. At the time, I was really hoping the Giants would go after Mike Evans. He had that big frame and seemed like the perfect red zone target. Sammy Watkins didn’t impress me much either, so I was skeptical about taking a wide receiver that early.

The Giants Had Options—and I Thought They’d Go O-Line.

Going into that draft, it seemed like offensive line was a major need. I thought Taylor Lewan or Zack Martin made a lot of sense for where we were. The offensive line had struggled, and protecting Eli had to be a top priority. There were also whispers about tight end Eric Ebron, another big target who might have added a different dimension to the offense.

Some mock drafts even had the Giants taking Aaron Donald. As great as he turned out, I never saw the Giants going that route. Jerry Reese, the GM at the time, always seemed to keep the defensive tackle position stocked. He also had a knack for finding talent at wide receiver, so in hindsight, maybe we should’ve trusted his instincts more.

Odell’s Talent Was Unforgettable—Even If It Was Brief.

Once Odell hit the field, everything changed. Despite the questions about his size, his speed, hands, and route-running were electric. That one-handed catch against Dallas? Instantly iconic. He brought energy and excitement back to the Giants’ offense, even if his time in New York was shorter than we’d hoped.

Looking back, I may not have seen it coming, but Odell Beckham Jr. was a game-changer.

Let’s address the obvious: this article is being written much later than usual. The disgust over how the season has played out made it difficult to revisit this game. However, as fans deserve a recap, here we are. We’ll also publish Sunday’s game against the Falcons later today, keeping the accountability going, even in tough times.

Malik Nabers Shines Despite the Loss

Malik Nabers managed a bright moment with his first touchdown since Week 3. Now sitting at 901 yards for the year, he’s just 99 yards shy of being the Giants’ first 1,000-yard receiver since Odell Beckham Jr. in 2018. If not for missing time with a concussion, Nabers would already have hit that milestone.

The Quarterback Situation Remains Grim

Tim Boyle threw the Giants’ first touchdown pass since Week 9, ending a month-long drought. Neither Drew Lock nor Tommy DeVito managed a touchdown during that span. DeVito, once a source of magic in 2023, now looks like the undrafted free agent he is. Injuries to both DeVito and Lock leave Boyle as the likely starter. The Giants should focus on finding a backup off the street to finish the season.

A Defense Outmatched by Lamar Jackson

The Ravens’ offense toyed with the Giants’ defense. Lamar Jackson barely needed the run game, as Baltimore’s passing attack tore through a battered secondary. Dane Belton, filling in for Tyler Nubin, stood out with 15 tackles and a sack, but the defense overall looked overwhelmed.

Familiar Calls for Change

For the ninth straight week, fans flew a banner over MetLife calling for change. John Mara insists Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll are safe, but history suggests he could change his mind. At 0-8 at home and on a nine-game losing streak, the Giants could finish winless at MetLife in 2024.

With three games left, the focus shifts to draft position. If the Raiders win another game, the Giants could lock in the No. 1 pick. As for Daniel Jones? He’s likely relieved to be watching this disaster unfold from the Minnesota sidelines.

There was some hope last offseason that joining forces with quarterback Lamar Jackson would usher in a statistical renaissance for Beckham, but he started slowly, suffered an ankle injury after just two weeks, and didn’t top the 50-yard mark in a game until Nov. 5. Even while Jackson played at an MVP level, it was rookie WR Zay Flowers who ended up emerging as the de facto WR1, though Beckham did finish second in yardage while averaging a career-high 16.1 yards per catch.

A free agent once again, Beckham landed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins. Despite checking in as the No. 3 receiver behind receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, the speed-oriented nature of head coach Mike McDaniel’s offense at least creates a level of intrigue for Beckham. As noted, the veteran hasn’t had much of an impact over the past four years, but the time he looked the most dangerous was during his postseason run with the Los Angeles Rams in 2021: 21 receptions, 288 yards, and two TDs in four games before tearing his ACL during the Super Bowl.

Despite some lean years, it’s hard to argue that Beckham won’t have an opportunity here. Last season, the Dolphins led the NFL in passing offense, but only Hill (1,799 yards) and Waddle (1,014) finished in the NFL’s top-100 in receiving yardage. The rest of Miami’s receivers — Cedrick Wilson, Braxton Berrios, Robbie Chosen, River Cracraft, and Chase Claypool — combined for 66 receptions, 807 yards, and six touchdowns; none of them reached 300 yards on the season.

On paper, Beckham is an upgrade, and he brings a couple of silver linings from last year into his new role. First, there was his aforementioned 16.1 YPC, which speaks to some resurgent big-play ability, and second, he played in 14 games, matching his highest total since 2019. If he can stay healthy and develop some chemistry with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, Beckham has a chance to emerge as a dangerous third option for the Dolphins.

Fantasy football outlook

The style and prolific nature of Miami’s offense dictates you at least keep tabs on the veteran, however, and if OBJ shows signs of being a meaningful contributor he could be worth scooping up as roster depth with a little upside. The likeliest path to fantasy production is an injury taking Waddle or Hill off the field for a long stretch of time.

Entering his age-32 season and four full years removed from his last semi-impactful effort, Beckham isn’t someone you can rely on.

Just talked to Odell Beckham Jr, who said he had a “brief” convo w/Dave Gettleman. “At this point I have no idea what to think. I’m trying to process it right now.” Said leaving #NYG is “bittersweet, but it is what it is. It’s life.”
