New York Giants OL Roy Mbaeteka turns down Giants contract to return to International Pathway Program.

Currently, the New York Giants have signed 12 players to future/reserve contracts. Unfortunately, prospect Roy Mbaeteka has declined their offer.

Mbaeteka, who joined the Giants through the NFL’s International Pathway Program, declined an offer for a reserve/futures contract despite spending most of the 2022 season on the team’s practice squad.

The Giants offered a futures contract to Nigerian OL Roy Mbaeteka, but he declined, per source. Mbaeteka instead will return to the International Pathway Program. The upside of that path: Mbaeteka will be assured of three years on a practice squad so he can develop.

Mbaeteka was just a “regular” player this season since he was signed as a free agent, and therefore the Giants didn’t get a P-squad exemption for him. As a result, he spent much of the season on his own because the Giants needed his P-squad spot for contributors.
Dan Duggan

As a result of his decision, Mbaeteka will go back to the NFL’s International Pathway Program.

Mbaeteka was mentored by Giants Legend Osi Umenyiora through the NFL Africa initiative, which is a component of the International Pathway Program (IPP).

Today’s Throwback Thursday are the legends who returned to camp earlier this week to offer their support. Phil Simms, Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora, Mathias Kiwanuka

New York Giants Head Coach Joe Judge speaking on Giants legend returning to camp.

First off, Osi (Umenyiora), Kiwi (Mathias Kiwanuka) and Justin (Tuck) coming back and talking to the team, that was huge for us,” Head Coach Joe Judge said on Tuesday. “I’ve said it from the beginning, this is a different organization, there is a connection between past players, past history of these teams and the players that sit in these chairs today. It’s important our players understand and have respect for the history that they come after.

“They have to understand what’s happened, the players who did it, and the culture and the standards that remain consistent throughout those great times of this organization. Without going into direct specifics of what they said, I would just say that everything you could ever ask to be said to a team and needed to be said, they covered. Covered very direct from a player’s perspective, very strong message, it was very well received.”

Giants To Work Out Two European Players

The Giants are searching high and low to fill their roster needs. I’m sure Jerry Reese would call this “due diligence”. The NFL continues to flirt with expansion into London and possible new avenues into playing in the NFL. Last year Jerry Reese signed Canadian Center Brett Jones, this year two European players will travel to New York for a work out.

NFL Draft Diamonds featured both players prior. Here are their findings.

Harry Innis is a 6’7 tight end who we have featured many times on NFL Draft Diamonds. Innis is a tall tight end with soft hands. He entered the new program assisted by the NFL and former NFL player Osi Umenyiora a few months ago. Innis has the same size/attributes as Rob Gronkowski. He has been playing American football overseas and was a stud for Kiel Baltic of the German Football League, and finished last season with Senajoki Crocodiles.

D’Anthony Dable’ the 6’4 physical wide out is another player who will be visiting the New York Giants next week. Dable’ is a very quick player with great hands. Both players played overseas and both were standouts in their conferences.

With Osi Umenyiora as an NFL ambassador in London maybe other foreign born players will get a few looks at making a roster.

The post Giants To Work Out Two European Players first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

Giants Ring of Honor Inductees 2015

The Giants will induct Chris Snee, Osi Umenyiora, John Johnson, and Jack Lummus into the Ring Of Honor during Sunday’s game. The Giants started the Ring of Honor on October, 2010 It was believed that John Mara wanted to remember key Giants who helped the franchise achieve each of their championships. After Sunday night’s inductees the Giants Ring of Honor will have a total of 39 members.

Chris Snee

“I took pride in being out there every game,” Snee said. “You only get so many opportunities to play games, so I am thankful. There were games where I probably was 70 percent, less than that, but I thought I owed it to the organization and to my teammates, coaches and the fans just to be out there. I’m getting paid to play that day, so I’m going to play.”

Osi Umenyiora

I finished my contract over there, and in my head I wanted to retire as a New York Giant,” Umenyiora said. “I wanted to play here, because I’d already done something else. Once I saw that that opportunity wasn’t really feasible, it just made sense for me to retire. I played the majority of my career here so for me it just made sense to be able to come back here to where I consider home and retire as a Giant.”

John Johnson

Johnson joined the team as an athletic trainer in 1948. He retired at age 90 following the 2007 season and Super Bowl XLII, ending a remarkable 60-year career with the franchise. According to Ronnie Barnes “He traveled with the team and was an indispensable member of the medical staff. He had so many stories about the early NFL and medicine before the arthroscope and advanced diagnostic technology.”

Jack Lummus

Jack Lummus’ entire Giants career consisted of nine games in 1941. He was a 6-3, 200-pound two-way end who that season caught one pass for five yards for a Giants team that finished 8-3 before losing to the Bears in the NFL Championship Game on Dec. 21, two weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

On Jan. 30, 1942, with the United States fully engaged in World War II, Lummus gave up his football career to enlist in the Marine Corps Reserves. He was sent to the Mainside Recruit Training Center in San Diego for basic training. It was there, on March 16, 1942, that he wrote a letter to Jack Mara, the son of Giants founder Tim Mara and brother of Wellington Mara, informing the Giants he had joined the Marines.

Three years later – on March 8, 1945 – Lummus was mortally wounded on Iwo Jima when he stepped on a land mine and lost his legs. On Sunday, he will join Blozis as Giants players who gave their lives in World War II and are forever memorialized by the organization in the Ring of Honor.

The New York Giants and former defensive end Osi Umenyiora are in talks about signing a one day ceremonial contract that would allow him to officially retire as a Giant. The defensive end played ten seasons with the Giants and was known for an explosive 1st step.

Umenyiora, 33, spent his first 10 NFL seasons with the Giants and established himself as a supreme pass-rusher, possessing a jet-quick first step that often left offensive tackles still anchored in their stance as he was bearing down on the quarterback. Umenyiora had 75 of his 85 career sacks for the Giants, including seasons of 14.5 (2005), 13 (2007) and 11.5 (2010). Umenyiora’s 75 sacks rank fourth on the Giants’ all-time list, behind Michael Strahan (141.5) Lawrence Taylor (132.5) and Leonard Marshall (79.5). NY Post – Paul Schwartz

Pepper Johnson Or Steve Spagnuolo? As the search for the Giants defensive…

The post Pepper Johnson Or Steve Spagnuolo? first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

Pepper Johnson Or Steve Spagnuolo?

As the search for the Giants defensive coordinator continues, two names from the past emerge as leaders of the pack. I ask you big blue faithful, Pepper Johnson or Steve Spagnuolo?

Johnson has deep roots in our Giants organization. Pepper was a fixture at linebacker from 1986-1992 earning two Super Bowl rings under Head Coach Bill Parcells. Johnson also spent 14 seasons behind Bill Belichick’s various coaching staffs including New England. Currently he is the defensive line coach for the Buffalo Bills.

Spagnuolo is also part of Giants royalty as the Superbowl winning defensive coordinator in 2007-08 until taking a head coaching position in St Louis in 2009. Since his release form the Rams Spagnuolo and a quick stint with the saints and currently resides as the Ravens’ defensive backs coach.

Raven Head Coach Jim Harbaugh has granted permission for the Giants to interview Spagnuolo and had the following to say.

Steve is a great coach. He’s done a great job with the guys throughout the course of the season. Obviously, a tremendously experienced coach. He’s been a head coach, he’s been a coordinator and that’s not something that we would want to hold him back from as an opportunity. I don’t know what’s going to happen with that, but that’s something he deserves an opportunity to look at.

Former Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora opinion in the Spagnuolo may be the man for the job.

I never have really met anyone quite like him in regards to what he was able to do and the things he would do on the fly. It was crazy. You’d come in with a game plan and something wouldn’t be going right or something we were doing was getting shredded, and he’d literally — right there on the sideline — come up with something different.

Johnson is in no way short of former Giants endorsements. Fellow teammate and now analysts Carl Banks stated.

He has a great knowledge of defense, he’s a great teacher — I’m not telling you that that’s who they should pick — I think they should interview him, and I think if he gets interviewed, then they’ll have an idea whether or not he’s someone that can lead the Giants’ defense back to where it needs to be. He’ll make a good account for himself.”
