Overtime Now Guarantees Possessions.

For the first time, regular season overtime will follow the postseason model. That means both teams are guaranteed at least one possession, even if the first team scores a touchdown.

However, the overtime period will still be limited to 10 minutes. If the game remains tied at the end of those 10 minutes, it will end in a tie—just like before.

This change brings a more balanced and fair approach to overtime, ensuring that both teams get a shot with the football.

Kickoffs Designed for More Action.

Another major change involves kickoffs. When a kickoff results in a touchback, the ball will now be placed at the 35-yard line instead of the 30.

The goal is to reduce touchbacks and encourage more returns, adding excitement and strategy back into the play.

Replay Assist Gets a Boost.

The NFL is expanding its replay assist system. Now, officials can use replay to overturn certain penalties—but only when the video evidence is clear and obvious.

The types of penalties eligible for review include:

• Hits to defenseless players
• Facemask grabs
• Horse collar tackles
• Tripping
• Running into or roughing the kicker

This change aims to improve accuracy without slowing the game down too much.

Free Agency and “Tush Push” Update.

Teams are now allowed to hold Zoom calls and schedule visits with free agents during the legal tampering period. This rule will be tested for one year to see how it works.

Meanwhile, a proposal to ban the “tush push” quarterback sneak was discussed—but didn’t get enough support to pass. So, for now, that play stays in the game.

NFL & EA Madden news!
Per Albert Breer NFL owners just voted to approve an extension of their deal with Electronic Arts. This one will run through the 2025 season (and through 2026 if revenue markers are hit). So when it comes to that kind of game, it’ll be Madden for a while.

Here are the 9 new NFL rules or tweaks for the upcoming 2016-2017 season. Soak them in, some are minor changes, and some are adjustments that will stick going forward (see extra point rule).

Extra Point stay at the 15.
1. By Competition Committee; Permanently moves the line of scrimmage for Try kicks to the defensive team’s 15-yard line, and allows the defense to return any missed Try.

Coach-to-Player Communication.
2. By Competition Committee; Permits the offensive and defensive play callers on the coaching staffs to use the coach-to-player communication system regardless of whether they are on the field or in the coaches’ booth.

No More Chop Blocks.
3. By Competition Committee; Makes all chop blocks illegal. “It is not one that has overwhelmed us in injury data, but it is not one we feel good about,” McKay said.

You Fouled Out.
4. By Competition Committee; Disqualifies a player who is penalized twice in one game for certain types of unsportsmanlike conduct fouls. Amended to one-year only.

Touchbacks at the 25.
5. By Competition Committee; Changes the spot of the next snap after a touchback resulting from a free kick to the 25-yard line. Amended to one-year only.

By to Horse Collar Tackles.
6. By Competition Committee; Expands the horse collar rule to include when a defender grabs the jersey at the name plate or above and pulls a runner toward the ground.

Don’t call a time out if your don’t have one.
7. By Competition Committee; Makes it a foul for delay of game when a team attempts to call a timeout when it is not permitted to do so.

Ineligible Receiver Rule
8. By Competition Committee; Eliminates the five-yard penalty for an eligible receiver illegally touching a forward pass after being out of bounds and re-establishing himself inbounds, and makes it a loss of down.

No More Multiple Ppots of Enforcement For a Double Foul
9. By Competition Committee; Eliminates multiple spots of enforcement for a double foul after a change of possession.
