In a recent episode of the Bleed Big Blue Podcast, I broke down why my opinion has changed. While I still believe Schoen’s first few seasons were far from perfect, the way he and Harbaugh appeared to work together throughout the draft has given me a different perspective on the direction of this franchise.

John Harbaugh’s Arrival Changed My Perspective

The biggest reason I’m more comfortable with Joe Schoen staying is John Harbaugh. If Harbaugh signed off on extending Schoen, that’s good enough for me. Ownership clearly trusts their general manager, but just as importantly, their new head coach does too.

Watching the 2026 NFL Draft, it felt like Harbaugh and Schoen were working together instead of competing for control. Harbaugh may have identified players he wanted, but Schoen looked comfortable navigating the draft board. He seemed to know exactly when he could be patient and when he needed to be aggressive. Trading up for Malachi Fields was a perfect example. To me, that’s where a general manager earns his paycheck.

Joe Schoen Still Has to Own His Early Draft Misses

None of this erases what happened during Schoen’s first few seasons. His first draft class included Kayvon Thibodeaux and Evan Neal, two top-10 picks who simply haven’t lived up to expectations. When you’re drafting that high, those are players who have to become cornerstones of your franchise.

At the same time, it’s worth remembering that very few people questioned those selections when they were made. If the Giants hadn’t drafted either player, another team likely would have taken them just a few picks later. That’s the reality of the NFL Draft. Sometimes the consensus gets it wrong, and sometimes talented players never develop the way everyone expected.

Great General Managers Earn Their Money on Day 2 and Day 3

One point we talked about on the podcast is something I’ve always believed. The players at the top of the draft are usually obvious. Most fans can identify the best prospects because we’ve spent months watching highlights, reading mock drafts, and hearing analysts talk about them.

Where general managers really separate themselves is in the middle and later rounds. That’s where you find future starters, quality depth, and the occasional hidden gem that every other team overlooked. Those are the picks that quietly build winning football teams, and that’s an area where I’ll continue to judge Joe Schoen over the next few years.

Was It Really the Players, or Was It the Coaching?

Another thing I’ve started wondering is how much of the Giants’ struggles came down to coaching rather than talent. Harbaugh chose to keep several players that many fans, myself included, had started to lose faith in. That tells me he still sees something worth developing.

Take Evan Neal as an example. I’ve always wondered what his market would have looked like if he had actually reached free agency. I don’t think teams would have been throwing huge contracts at him, but I guarantee there would have been coaches around the league saying, “Give me that player. I can fix him.”

Every sport has coaches who believe they can unlock a player’s potential. Maybe Harbaugh and his staff can finally get more out of some of these former first-round picks.

Looking Back at the Saquon Barkley Decision

Another move that’s still debated is letting Saquon Barkley leave in free agency. I’ll admit it hurt watching him sign with Philadelphia, and it hurt even more seeing him win a Super Bowl with a division rival. No Giants fan enjoyed watching that.

Even so, I still think it was the right football decision. Barkley was an incredible talent, but he also battled injuries throughout much of his Giants career. More importantly, the Giants simply weren’t built to maximize what he did best.

The offensive line wasn’t good enough, the passing game wasn’t good enough, and defenses consistently stacked the box because they weren’t worried about getting beat through the air. The Giants weren’t winning consistently with Barkley on the roster, so paying top dollar for a running back wasn’t going to fix the bigger issues facing the team.

Joe Schoen Has Earned Another Opportunity, Now He Has to Deliver

Joe Schoen’s tenure as general manager hasn’t been perfect. There have been draft misses, difficult roster decisions, and plenty of criticism. At one point, I thought the Giants needed a complete reset, and that included moving on from both Schoen and Brian Daboll.

Today, I don’t feel that way. Ownership believes in Joe Schoen, and John Harbaugh clearly does too. After watching how this offseason unfolded and seeing the approach they took during the 2026 NFL Draft, I’m beginning to understand why the Giants chose to stick with him.

Now comes the part that matters most. The contract extension is signed, the draft is complete, and the excuses are over. It’s time for Joe Schoen to prove the New York Giants made the right decision.

From Saquon Barkley’s workload to the possibility of losing A.J. Brown, there were plenty of reasons to believe the Eagles may not be the same team Giants fans have grown accustomed to seeing at the top of the division. While they’re still loaded with talent, every NFL contender eventually reaches a point where the cracks begin to show.

Is Saquon Barkley Due for Regression?

Saquon Barkley put together an outstanding season in Philadelphia, but history isn’t exactly kind to running backs coming off heavy workloads.

I’ve always been a big fan of Saquon. In fact, when he was with the Giants, I understood why the front office hesitated to give him a massive long-term contract. It wasn’t because of his talent. It was because of the injuries that followed him throughout much of his career.

Now that he’s entering another season after carrying the load, I think it’s fair to wonder if we’ll start to see some regression. Running backs rarely get better as they get older, especially after they’ve accumulated a lot of touches.

I’m not rooting against him just because he plays for Philadelphia. It’s simply the reality of the position. Eventually, every running back slows down.

Could Losing A.J. Brown Change Everything?

Editor’s Note: This podcast was recorded before A.J. Brown was traded. At the time, trade rumors were heating up, and we discussed what the Eagles would look like if they moved on from their star wide receiver. Shortly after the recording, Philadelphia traded Brown, confirming the speculation.

One of the biggest talking points during our discussion was how losing Brown could completely change the Eagles’ offense.

There’s no question that DeVonta Smith is an excellent receiver, but I don’t view him as the type of player who consistently commands double teams as a true No. 1 option. Brown forced defenses to account for him on every snap. Without that threat, opposing defenses can devote far more attention to stopping Saquon Barkley and make life much tougher on the passing game.

That creates a ripple effect throughout the offense. With Brown now gone, it’ll be interesting to see whether Jalen Hurts can elevate the players around him without one of the NFL’s premier wide receivers.

Can Jalen Hurts Carry the Offense?

Another question we discussed is whether Jalen Hurts can consistently elevate the offense if the supporting cast isn’t as dominant as it has been in recent years.

Philadelphia’s offensive line is still good, but I don’t think it’s quite the unstoppable unit it once was. If the running game becomes less effective and Brown is no longer there to stretch defenses, Hurts may be forced to win more games with his arm.

That’s something I’m still not convinced he can do over the course of an entire season.

Will the Salary Cap Finally Catch Up to Philadelphia?

For years, the Eagles have done an incredible job manipulating the salary cap.

Every offseason, it seems like they’re able to keep signing star players while everyone else wonders how they’re pulling it off. Credit to their front office because they’ve mastered restructuring contracts and pushing money into future seasons.

But eventually, those decisions have to catch up with you.

Maybe it isn’t this year. Maybe it’s two years from now. But at some point, constantly kicking the financial can down the road becomes much harder to sustain.

My Prediction: The Eagles Finish Third in the NFC East

I think the Eagles take a significant step backward this season. If everything we’ve discussed starts to unfold, Barkley slows down, the offense has to adjust without A.J. Brown, the passing game becomes easier to defend, and some of the pressure from their salary cap situation begins to mount, I could see Philadelphia finishing third in the NFC East.

That’s certainly a bold take, especially considering how talented their roster still is, but every year there’s a team that disappoints. I think the Eagles could be that team in 2026.

Will I end up being right? Time will tell.

One thing is certain: if the Eagles stumble early, the pressure in Philadelphia will build quickly, and things could unravel faster than many people expect.

Final Thoughts

The Eagles are still a talented football team, and nobody should expect them to simply roll over. But maintaining success in the NFL is incredibly difficult. Rosters change, players age, injuries happen, and sometimes a team that looked unstoppable one year takes a noticeable step back the next.

Whether it’s Saquon Barkley’s workload, replacing A.J. Brown, questions surrounding Jalen Hurts, or the long-term effects of pushing money into future seasons, I think there are enough warning signs to believe Philadelphia could regress in 2026.

We’ll find out soon enough if this prediction looks foolish or ends up being one of the bigger storylines of the season.

In what many fans view as a colossal misstep, General Manager Joe Schoen let Saquon Barkley walk away in free agency. Barkley didn’t just leave—he joined the rival Philadelphia Eagles and went on to win a Super Bowl. That stings on its own.

But what makes it worse? The entire fallout was captured on camera and packaged into Hard Knocks: An Offseason with the New York Giants, which aired on HBO Max. If that wasn’t enough salt in the wound, the docuseries just earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Documentary Series.

Emmy Nomination Highlights Giants’ Pain.

From a fan perspective, this feels like a twisted joke. The Giants’ mistakes are now award-worthy content. It’s easy to understand why fans feel betrayed. Not only did they lose a franchise player—they had to watch the painful unraveling play out in HD for a national audience.

Yet, here’s the thing—I actually liked the series.

A Good Watch, Even if It Hurt.

It’s strange to say, but Hard Knocks was well done. It told a compelling story, even if it made the Giants look incompetent. If the team had landed a few key wins, maybe this documentary would’ve felt more like a redemption arc instead of a cautionary tale.

Interestingly, the NFL now seems to be pulling back. There are reports the offseason edition of Hard Knocks may be shelved going forward. Maybe it hit a little too close to home.

At the end of the day, Giants fans deserved better—on the field and on the screen.

A Tough Finish to a Rough Year

The New York Giants wrapped up their 2024 season with a 20-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles, already secured as the NFC’s No. 2 seed, rested several starters. Despite this, the Giants could not capitalize and ended their season with a 3-14 record. The Eagles, meanwhile, finished an impressive 14-3.

Offensive Line Struggles Continue

The Giants’ offensive line woes persisted in the finale. With John Michael Schmitz (ankle) and Evan Neal (rib/hip) unavailable, the team fielded its 10th different line combination of the season. This tied last year’s total. Greg Van Roten stepped in as center for the second consecutive game. Undrafted rookie Jake Kubas played right guard, while Tyre Phillips made his first start since a season-ending quad injury in December 2023.

Malik Nabers Sets a Franchise Record

Malik Nabers entered Week 18 needing four catches to break Steve Smith’s single-season record of 107 receptions, set in 2009. The rookie achieved the milestone in the third quarter and finished with five catches for 64 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown. Nabers, the sixth overall pick, also set the Giants’ rookie record for receptions, previously held by Odell Beckham Jr. and Saquon Barkley with 91 each.

Nabers’ stellar season now awaits comparison to Las Vegas’ Brock Bowers, who may challenge the NFL rookie reception record later today.

Wan’Dale Robinson Shines

Wan’Dale Robinson contributed a team-leading 10 catches in the game, bringing his season total to 93. This mark ranks as the fifth-highest in Giants history. His consistent performances were a bright spot in an otherwise frustrating season.

Defensive Efforts Highlighted by Thibodeaux and Johnson

Kayvon Thibodeaux notched the game’s first sack in the third quarter, finishing the season with 5.5 sacks in 12 games. This performance made him the 19th player in franchise history to reach at least 20 career sacks. Linebacker Dyontae Johnson also stood out, leading the team with 11 tackles in just his second game back from an ankle injury.

Eagles Rest Starters, Including Barkley

Philadelphia’s coach, Nick Sirianni, rested key players, including Saquon Barkley. Barkley was just 101 yards short of Eric Dickerson’s NFL single-season rushing record. Sirianni emphasized prioritizing the team’s playoff readiness over individual achievements.

Quarterback Tanner McKee, making his first career start, impressed with two touchdown passes and a 100.6 passer rating.

The Giants’ season ended in disappointment, leaving fans frustrated and hopeful for better days ahead.

The New York Giants’ 2024 season hit another low point with a crushing 34-7 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. This game marked the team’s 10th consecutive defeat, leaving fans frustrated and disheartened.

Drew Lock was expected to be the answer at quarterback. Once heralded as a potential franchise starter, his performance has been anything but promising. Lock’s struggles have been glaring, with little resemblance to the quarterback who led a game-winning drive for the Seahawks in 2023.

Offensive Woes Continue

The Giants’ running game has faltered, and injuries to the offensive line have worsened the situation. While rookie Tyrone Tracy has shown flashes of talent, he’s not the game-changer Saquon Barkley once was. Tracy’s efforts alone cannot compensate for poor blocking upfront.

Despite the overall struggles, Malik Nabers has been a rare bright spot. With 97 receptions, Nabers now holds the Giants’ rookie record. He is just eight catches shy of Puka Nacua’s all-time rookie mark of 105, set in 2023. Additionally, Nabers is only 31 yards away from becoming the first Giants receiver to eclipse 1,000 yards in a season since Odell Beckham Jr. in 2018.

Defensive Breakdown

The defense provided no answers for Bijan Robinson and the Falcons’ rushing attack. The once-dominant pass rush failed to record a single sack of Michael Penix Jr. The rookie quarterback looked composed in his debut, raising questions about whether the Giants erred in drafting Nabers over Penix. While it’s too soon to determine, Penix’s performance showed promise, despite an interception caused by a dropped pass.

Looking Ahead

The Giants’ final home game of the season is against the Indianapolis Colts. Sitting at 0-8 at home, the possibility of a winless home record looms large. For a franchise steeped in history, this season has been a new level of embarrassment.

Offense Breakdown

The New York Giants’ offense couldn’t find its rhythm in a disappointing 28-3 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Their total rushing yards added up to just 76, far below expectations, especially with former Giant Saquon Barkley dominating their defense.

Offensive Line Issues

The Giants’ offensive line held up decently for the first six weeks of the season. However, Andrew Thomas’ injury exposed major weaknesses. Joshua Ezeudu’s performance at left tackle was a significant problem, making it clear he isn’t the answer.

Daniel Jones and QB Concerns

Daniel Jones didn’t have much support, but he also struggled to respond to Philadelphia’s defense. His streak without a touchdown pass at MetLife Stadium continues—now four games into 2024 without a single passing touchdown at home. The streak stretches back to Week 17 of last season.

Drew Lock, who took snaps later, didn’t offer much of a spark. It’s unclear if Brian Daboll will start Lock next week against the Steelers. However, Lock’s uninspiring play gives little reason to believe he’s the solution.

Limited Impact from Malik Nabers

Malik Nabers was active but quiet. After a promising start to the season, he failed to register a catch in the second half, limiting his impact in a critical game.

Defensive Standouts and Setbacks

Dexter Lawrence continues to make his case for Defensive Player of the Year. Despite the team’s struggles, Lawrence has been dominant in 2024. The defense managed five sacks on Jalen Hurts, but the Eagles still racked up 269 rushing yards.

Saquon Barkley had a revenge game for the ages, torching the Giants with 176 rushing yards, a touchdown, and 187 all-purpose yards. The Giants couldn’t contain him throughout the game.

Special Teams and Outlook

Special teams didn’t have much to contribute. With only one field goal made by backup specialists, they couldn’t shift momentum.

At 2-5, the Giants are inching closer to another top draft pick. A win would’ve given them a glimmer of hope, but the lack of offensive production makes it hard to believe this team will turn things around in 2024.

With the 2024 NFL season approaching, I want to get this prediction out of the way before it all begins. Now that Saquon Barkley has moved to the Eagles, there’s a burning question: how will he perform?

Reflecting on Barkley’s Best Seasons.

Looking back at Barkley’s career, his rookie season in 2018 stands out. He rushed for 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns, averaging 5.0 yards per carry. His versatility was on full display with 91 receptions for 721 yards and four touchdowns, totaling an impressive 2,028 scrimmage yards. This performance earned him the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award and a Pro Bowl selection.

Fast forward to 2022, Barkley had a remarkable comeback season. He rushed for 1,312 yards and 10 touchdowns, with an average of 4.4 yards per carry. He added 338 receiving yards, totaling 1,650 scrimmage yards. His efforts were pivotal in leading the Giants to their first playoff appearance since 2016.

Predicting His 2024 Season.

While Barkley has had some incredible seasons, I don’t think he will match those numbers with the Eagles. Given that the Eagles will likely be cautious with his workload, especially early in the season, I predict a slow start. Some Giants fans might quickly label him as a disappointment, but that would be short-sighted.

As the season progresses, I believe Barkley will be utilized more strategically, particularly in critical moments. My prediction for his 2024 season with the Eagles is 900 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. It may not match his best years, but Barkley’s talent will still shine through when it matters most.

We gained valuable insights into the Giants’ offseason in episode three of Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants. The episode delved into key events like free agency, Saquon Barkley’s departure, and the impactful trade for Brian Burns. The show provided an in-depth look at the team’s strategic decisions and how they are shaping the roster for the upcoming season all streaming on HBO.

We’re not gonna go there. We’re out

The big debate has been whether Saquon Barkley actually received a final offer from the New York Giants, or if he was lying, as Hard Knocks suggested Joe Schoen did make an offer. The episode began with Joe Schoen on the phone, discovering that a three-year deal worth $12.5 million per year with $25 million guaranteed might seal the deal.The Giants allowed Barkley to test free agency to find out his market value, hoping he would return with an offer they could match or decline. This did happen, and GM Joe Schoen asked Berry directly, “What would we need to do to get Saquon?”

Schoen later asked Berry, “If I offered him a three-year deal at $12.5 million per year with $25 million guaranteed, would he stay with the Giants?” Berry hesitated, saying they had a lot of work to do if that happened. Schoen then told team owner John Mara that Berry wasn’t sure Barkley would accept the offer.

Mara, worried about Barkley possibly joining the Eagles, said, “I’ll have a tough time sleeping if Saquon goes to Philadelphia. He’s our most popular player.” When the Giants learned from Berry that Barkley had an offer, it was clear Barkley would not be returning to the Giants.

Free agency poker.

Hard Knocks creatively used poker visuals to illustrate the high-stakes nature of free agency, making the negotiation process even more captivating for viewers. Watching the negotiation process was fascinating. Agents shared offers from other teams to increase the price tags for players. While this is a common tactic, seeing it in action as the Giants worked to pay the players they wanted was insightful.

For the offensive line, the Giants made it a priority during free agency. After a final conversation between coach Brian Daboll and Schoen, they offered contracts to three players, including the two they signed: Jon Runyan Jr. and Jermaine Eluemunor.

Moving on with Brian Burns

After losing Saquon and McKinney, the Giants went after Brian Burns.

It’s clear Joe Schoen was excited about trading for Brian Burns, as he mentioned it several times in each episode. Once the Giants lost their free agents, Schoen met with Brandon Brown, Shane Bowen, and Brian Daboll to get their input on Burns. Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen fully supported trading for the EDGE, even though it would be the team’s only defensive move.

We saw Joe Schoen discuss the potential trade package, but the front office had to wait for approval from David Tepper in Carolina. Dan Morgan called back asking for an additional seventh-round pick, which clearly frustrated Schoen. Landing Brian Burns for less than a first-round pick is incredible, considering Morgan initially asked for two first-rounders and the Panthers had declined four first-round picks from the Rams.

To celebrate the Giants’ 100th season, an independent committee of award-winning journalists, NFL and Pro Football Hall of Fame executives, and superfans have ranked the Giants’ Top 100 players. Willie Williams secured the 96th spot on their Top 100 List.

Many feel this ranking is tainted by Saquon Barkleys recent departure to The Philadelphia Eagles, given the controversy I’ll share the panels thoughts.

The Associated Press NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award has been bestowed since 1957. In the first 57 years of the award, through 2013, no Giants player ever won it. Then the Giants accounted for two in five years. The No. 2 overall selection in the 2018 NFL Draft, Saquon Barkley capped an extraordinary debut season with the award, matching the achievement of wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. in 2014. Fittingly, Beckham presented Barkley with the trophy at the eighth annual NFL Honors. Beckham was the franchise’s first Rookie of the Year since Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor had won the defensive award in 1981. Barkley had one of the most productive rookie seasons by a running back in NFL history, and he inserted his name into numerous sections of the Giants’ franchise records.
