The New York Giants issue a lengthy, detailed statement addressing the Brian Flores discrimination claims and lawsuit.

Brian Flores has raised serious issues in the filing of his complaint. The specific claims against the Giants and Mr. Flores’ allegations about the legitimacy of his candidacy for our head coach position are disturbing and simply false.

After we interviewed six exceptional and diverse candidates, the decision on who we would hire as head coach was made on the evening of January 28, one day after Mr. Flores spent an entire day in our offices going through his second interview for the position, meeting with ownership and other staff members, and receiving a tour of our facility. (See the itinerary below). There is additional concrete and objective evidence to substantiate we did not make our decision until the evening of the 28th.

The allegation that the Giants’ decision had been made prior to Friday evening, January 28, is false. And to base that allegation on a text exchange with Bill Belichick in which he ultimately states that he “thinks” Brian Daboll would get the job is irresponsible. The text exchange occurred the day before Coach Daboll’s in-person interview even took place. Giants’ ownership would never hire a head coach based only on a 20-minute zoom interview, which is all that Mr. Daboll had at that point.

In addition, Mr. Belichick does not speak for and has no affiliation with the Giants. Mr. Belichick’s text exchange provides no insight into what actually transpired during our head coaching search.

It has been well documented how much research and due diligence we did on Mr. Flores as it related to his candidacy. John Mara called Mr. Flores two days after he was dismissed in Miami. Mr. Mara expressed to Mr. Flores in that January 12 call that once we had our new general manager in place, we would begin the process of hiring our head coach and we wanted to meet with Mr. Flores because we considered him a serious candidate for the position. Mr. Mara and Mr. Flores then had their first formal conversation in a 25-30 minute zoom call on January 18 (at Mr. Flores’ request) to further discuss his candidacy.

In between those initial conversations and Mr. Flores’ in-person interview on January 27, there were several other communications between Mr. Flores and members of our organization. This included a dinner with our newly hired general manager, Joe Schoen, the night before Mr. Flores’s in-person interview. The consensus from within the Giants organization after this dinner remained that Mr. Flores was an outstanding candidate, and we looked forward to sitting down with him in person the next day.

Our hiring process and, most certainly, our consideration of Mr. Flores was serious and genuine. We are disappointed to learn that Mr. Flores was under the mistaken impression the job had already been awarded.

In his CBS interview yesterday, Mr. Flores was asked if “clubs have the right to hire the person they think is the best qualified for the job or the person they feel is right for them?” Mr. Flores responded “They do. That’s very reasonable to me . . .”. That is exactly what we did.

We hired Brian Daboll as our head coach at the conclusion of an open and thorough interview process. No decision was made, and no job offer was extended, until the evening of January 28, a full day after Mr. Flores’ in-person interview and day-long visit to the Giants.

Brian Flores, former head coach of the Miami Dolphins has filed a class action lawsuit against multiple NFL teams for racist hiring practices. In his lawsuit Flores accuses the New York Giants, and Denver Broncos of holding sham interviews only to fulfill the league’s Rooney rule.

Leslie Frazier, who coordinated the NFL’s top-ranked defense in 2021 and whose 23-year NFL coaching career includes a stint as a head coach, today had his second interview for the Giants head coaching position.
Frazier, 62, had his initial conversation with the team on Saturday when he spoke via video conference with team president John Mara, chairman Steve Tisch and Joe Schoen, who was hired a week ago as the Giants’ new general manager.

The New York Giants also added.

Today, Frazier met at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center with Mara, Tisch, Schoen and senior vice president of player personnel Chris Mara. He also met with other members of the front office and toured the team’s facility.

Flores, a 40-year-old Brooklyn native, met at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center with team president John Mara, chairman Steve Tisch, senior vice president of player personnel Chris Mara and Joe Schoen, who was formally introduced yesterday as the Giants’ new general manager. He also met with other members of the front office and toured the team’s facility.

The New York Giants also added.

He is the sixth candidate to interview with the Giants’ front office, joining Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, Lou Anarumo of Cincinnati, Dan Quinn of the Cowboys and the Giants’ Patrick Graham. Daboll initially interviewed via teleconference and had a second in-person discussion at team headquarters Tuesday. The meetings with Frazier and Anarumo were done remotely. Frazier is scheduled for a face-to-face follow-up tomorrow. Quinn and Graham were interviewed in the Giants’ facility.

Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll today became the first Giants head coach candidate to have a second interview for the position.
Daboll, 46, spent the day at the team’s Quest Diagnostics Training Center and met with team president John Mara, chairman Steve Tisch, senior vice president of player personnel Chris Mara and Joe Schoen, who was hired last week as the Giants’ new general manager. He also met with other members of the front office and toured the facility.

The New York Giants also added.

Daboll joined the Bills in 2018 after helping lead Alabama to its 17th national championship in 2017. He was the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach that season.

Daboll has 20 years of NFL coaching experience. He spent 11 seasons with the New England Patriots (2000-06, 2013-16) in a variety of roles and helped the franchise win five Super Bowls (XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLIX and LI). Daboll has been an offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns (2009-10), Miami Dolphins (2011) and Chiefs (2012). He was also the Jets’ quarterbacks coach in 2007-08.

Dan Quinn, a New Jersey native whose stint as the Atlanta Falcons’ coach included a trip to Super Bowl LI, today became the fourth candidate to interview for the Giants’ head coaching position.

Quinn, 51, spent the day at the team’s Quest Diagnostics Training Center and met with team president John Mara, chairman Steve Tisch, senior vice president of player personnel Chris Mara and Joe Schoen, who was hired last week as the Giants’ new general manager. The contenders who preceded him were Buffalo Bills coordinators Brian Daboll (offense) and Leslie Frazier (defense) and Cincinnati Bengals’ defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, who was the Giants’ defensive backs coach in 2018.

The New York Giants also added.

Quinn spent the 2021 season as the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, who won the NFC East title with a 12-5 record. Dallas allowed 21.1 points a game, the NFL’s seventh-lowest figure. The Cowboys were second in third-down defense, allowing conversions on just 34.1% of their opportunities (76 of 223). Dallas had league-high totals of 34 takeaways and 26 interceptions, significant improvements after posting 23 takeaways and 10 picks in 2020, the year prior to Quinn’s arrival.

Tons of moving parts here but it appears that Patrick Graham is interested in staying as the New York Giants defensive coordinator if the situation fits, as reported by Ralph Vacchiano.

The 42-year-old Graham, who will be interviewed for the Giants head coaching vacancy, is interested in staying on as the defensive coordinator under a new head coach, according to someone familiar with his thinking. And many believe the Giants would be open to his return in the right situation.

Anarumo, who has been the Bengals’ defensive coordinator for three seasons, was the Giants’ defensive backs coach in 2018.

Anarumo, 55, spoke this afternoon via video conferencing with team president John Mara, chairman Steve Tisch and Joe Schoen, who was hired last week as the Giants’ new general manager. Anarumo is the third candidate to interview for the job, joining Buffalo Bills coordinators Brian Daboll (offense) and Leslie Frazier (defense). Schoen was the Bills’ assistant general manager the previous five seasons.
