Ex-Giants DC Wink Martindale Leaves For Michigan defensive coordinator position. Coming as…

The post Wink Martindale Leaves For Michigan first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

Ex-Giants DC Wink Martindale Leaves For Michigan defensive coordinator position.

Coming as no surprise, it looks like Wink Martindale has found another home. Michigan is planning to hire Martindale as their new defensive coordinator. Adam Schefter from ESPN reported this on Friday.

The deal is still being worked out, but there shouldn’t be any issues. Martindale and the Giants parted ways back in January. Our 2023 season was tough, with the defense finishing 27th overall. However, we tied for first in the NFL in turnovers created.

Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale parted ways with the team this week after a heated meeting with head coach Brian Daboll, capping off a disappointing second year together. According to The Post’s Paul Schwartz, Martindale, upset over the firing of assistants Kevin and Drew Wilkins, stormed out after delivering a “f–k you” to Daboll.

This incident was the culmination of a season filled with rumors about their strained partnership as the team fell from playoff contender to NFC East punching bags.

“Wink would just walk in (to a coaches’ meeting) and say something like, ‘When such and such did this, I stayed calm. I just went onto the next play,’” a team source said. “He’d throw stuff out there and see if he could get (Daboll) riled up. Dabes knows it. Dabes isn’t stupid. It would just float on by in the meeting, and nobody would say anything.”

Team Sources as per The New York Post.

At this point, it’s probably best for both parties to part ways. The tension and disagreements have clearly affected the team’s performance and morale. A fresh start could benefit Martindale, giving him the opportunity to find a new environment where he can thrive. Likewise, the Giants can bring in new leadership on defense to help rebuild and set a new direction for the future. Both sides need a clean slate to move forward.

The New York Giants have struggled through the first three weeks of the season, sitting with a disappointing 1-2 record. Defensive coordinator Wink Martindale did not shy away from the media in addressing their most glaring shortcoming ahead of their Monday night matchup against the Seattle Seahawks — tackling.

Wink Martindale addresses the defense’s tackling woes

Martindale spoke to the media this week and had this to say about getting players on the ground with more verve:

“What it comes down to is they are professional athletes and they’ve got to have that mindset of taking the right angle, stepping toes on toes, and making tackles,” Martindale said. “Which they have and they are going to do it again.”

New York is allowing 32.6 rush attempts per game, well above the current league average of 26.73. Teams are confident in attacking their defensive line on the ground and opening the door for pass plays — the first step in breaking down a defense.

The Giants will face off against a familiar face in Week 4

Why the Giants’ passing offense could explode in Week 4

Giants’ 2nd-year offensive lineman being thrust into a tough spot

To add to their woes, the Giants are allowing receivers to rack up 359 yards after the catch. They’re also surrendering 138.0 rushing yards per game. Further, their 31 missed tackles rank fourth-worst in the NFL entering Week 4.

As a result, New York has not been able to capitalize on time of possession and all of their opponents have scored at least 28 points on them.

The Giants will need to improve their tackling in Week 4

Several members of the Giants’ defense have seconded Martindale’s comments in recent days and the uniformity in mindset in the locker room is an encouraging sign that all hands will be on deck in cleaning up their errancies.

The Seahawks convert well on passing first downs with the fourth-highest conversion percentage among all teams. The Giants have favored a zone defense thus far and Martindale as well as head coach Mark Daboll head into tomorrow night’s pivotal matchup knowing what to exploit to avoid a 1-3 hole in an NFC East where all teams are above .500.

The post Giants’ Wink Martindale makes bold prediction about team’s tackling first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.
