New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones had a rough 2023 that was filled with both on-field struggles and serious injuries. It was a complete 180 from a successful 2022 season that landed him a four-year, $160 million extension by the Giants.

Similar to the situation entering the 2022 season, 2024 will be a make-or-break year for the 27-year-old quarterback. Evidenced by the team’s decision to take LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers with their first-round pick in the draft, the Giants are giving Jones another chance to prove that he is worthy of being their franchise quarterback for the long run.

Big Blue’s decision to keep Jones was met with some turmoil from fans who wanted to see them land one of the top quarterbacks in the draft such as JJ McCarthy or Drake Maye, though the reception from fans on the Nabers pick has been mostly positive with cautious optimism that Jones will figure things out having an elite target to throw to this upcoming season.

Former Giants offensive lineman Justin Pugh defended Jones and the team’s decision to keep him for this upcoming season. Pugh played with the G-Men from 2013-17 before briefly returning to the team last season.

The NY Giants NFL team held an organized team activity at their training facility in East Rutherford, NJ on Thursday May 30, 2024. Credit: Tariq Zehawi/NorthJersey.com / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Giants have had numerous attempts at surrounding Jones with offensive firepower that haven’t panned out. Tight end Darren Waller, who was acquired in a trade last offseason, retired from the NFL earlier this month following a series of injuries, and the signing of Kenny Golladay in 2020 didn’t work out as hoped either.

Now with Nabers in the fold, the Giants will rely on their younger receivers to contribute big plays for Jones and the offense as opposed to banking on aging veterans to do such a thing. They fortified the offensive line through free agency, so the next step is to give Jones strong playmaking targets to throw to. Nabers is projected to be the team’s top receiving target, with Wan’Dale Robinson, Jalin Hyatt, and Darius Slayton rounding out the receiving corps.

Though the majority of the group is still in its infancy phase, the only way they will be able to truly develop into elite targets is if Jones improves his game. If he struggles again in 2024, the Giants might have to consider moving on from him in order to get the most out of their younger receivers.

For now, Jones remains as the Giants quarterback, and how he performs with a retooled offense will determine his long-term outlook with the organization.

The post Former Giants offensive lineman defends team’s decision to stick with Daniel Jones first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

Victor Cruz Travels With Team To Buffalo

As the New York Giants are traveling to Buffalo, a surprise name made the trip. Victor Cruz, along with Justin Pugh, and Eli Apple are all possibilities to play vs the Bills on Saturday.

The following players did not travel to Buffalo:

Geremy Davis
Will Johnson
Leon McFadden
J.T. Thomas III
Kerry Wynn

— New York Giants (@Giants) August 19, 2016

Head Coach Ben Mcadoo did not rule out any player who traveled, but it seems unlikely the Cruz will play with such little participation in practice. Having been recently limited because of a groin injury, it is possible that Cruz is playing the role of a good teammate.

Having Victor participate in pregame warm ups would be a step in the correct direction.

The post Victor Cruz Travels With Team To Buffalo first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

Giants pick up Justin Pugh’s option for 2017 season

An announcement came from The New York Giants on Tuesday that they have picked up Justin Pugh’s option, this will keep him with NYG through the 2017 season.

The Giants today picked up the fifth-year option on the contract of Justin Pugh, their 2013 first-round draft choice and a stalwart on their offensive line.

In his first three seasons, Pugh started all 44 games in which he played – 31 at right tackle, including all 16 as a rookie, 12 at left guard, and 1 at left tackle.

Pugh has been a solid addition the the O-Line, I’m glad the Giants picked up his option.

The post Giants pick up Justin Pugh’s option for 2017 season first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

Giants Vs Bills Breakdown

Much is written about the New York Giants this year. This team could easily be 3-0, but in reality this team could also be 0-3. I’ve asked our friends at billsdaily (@billsdaily) to help dissect this team match up in the season.

For the Giants

1. O-Line holds together

The Giants o-line shows signs of gluing together. The recent youth movement is gaining confidence and experience as multiple players have stepped up their game. Justin Pugh continues to play multiple positions well. His versatility was noticed stepping into left tackle last week in Ereck Flowers absence. Flowers should be ready to return this week only helping the Giants run game support.

2. Eli Manning playing smart and quick.

Head coach Tom Coughlin is well aware of the Rex Ryan’s defense they will face the Sunday.

“They’re good, they’re physical, they’ve got good size, they can rush the passer, they can defend the run, the linebacker corps has done an outstanding job, the middle ‘backer had two interceptions the other day, one for a touchdown. That’s a pretty good day’s work,” Coughlin said.

Expect Eli to get the ball out of his hands quickly with short receiving routes. Mixing it up between Odell Beckham and Shane Vereen should keep Bills defense off-balance and open up longer shots down the field.

3. Force Tyrod Taylor to make tough decisions.

Taylor has played well his first three games shown the ability to throw the deep ball and create plays outside of the pocket. Losing both Sammy Watkins and LaShawn McCoy (both listed as doubtful) Will make Taylor lean on less reliable options. The Giants defense has done well, causing some key turnovers. Mid game changes in coverage and schemes could confuse Taylor into being less careless with the ball.

For The Bills

The Bills are coming off a confidence building road win against division rival Miami and they feel they can play with any team in the league. Even though they only play the Giants once every four years they have not fared well against them. The game is in Orchard Park where the Bills have a significant homefield advantage. If they do these three things that will help them get their second straight victory.

1. If Tyrod Taylor continues to play like he has so far this season.

Tyrod Taylor has far exceeded expectations so far in his first three career starts. He is the only NFL QB to rank in the top five in completion percentage (74.4%), yards per attempt (9.15) and touchdown passes with 7. They are the third ranked scoring offense and lead the league in big plays with 17 20+ yard plays. If they have similar success against a Giants defense that ranks dead last in pass defense they can build a lead and allow the defense to do what it does best and tee off on Eli Manning.

2. If they make Manning uncomfortable

Eli Manning is tough to sack so they may not bring him down that often but they need to get pressure and make him uncomfortable in the pocket. If the offense continues to hum along than the defense will be able to be aggressive and tee of. They need to confuse Manning with the unbalanced blitzes coming from all angles. That can pressure him into making mistakes that can give the Bills the advantage in this game.

3. If they get out to an early lead.

That will allow the crowd to stay very loud which will make communication tough for Manning. That along with pressure will diffuse the impact the Giants talented receiving corps will have on the game especially with the possibility of Victor Cruz coming back to the lineup.

Closing

This is going to be considered a tough game for the G-Men. Vegas placed us a six point underdogs. We usually thrive in the underdog roll. Don’t be surprised if the Giants pull the win for 2-2. Please leave your comment below and don’t be afraid to share the post!

The post Giants Vs Bills Breakdown first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.
