Heading into the Draft, I Had Other Names in Mind.

With the NFL Draft just around the corner, I couldn’t help but think back to 2014—a bold move that changed the Giants’ offense. It’s Throwback Thursday, and today we’re looking at when the Giants drafted wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. with the 12th overall pick.

Honestly, I was surprised. Odell felt a bit undersized to be a true WR1, and I wasn’t convinced he’d be the right fit for Eli Manning. At the time, I was really hoping the Giants would go after Mike Evans. He had that big frame and seemed like the perfect red zone target. Sammy Watkins didn’t impress me much either, so I was skeptical about taking a wide receiver that early.

The Giants Had Options—and I Thought They’d Go O-Line.

Going into that draft, it seemed like offensive line was a major need. I thought Taylor Lewan or Zack Martin made a lot of sense for where we were. The offensive line had struggled, and protecting Eli had to be a top priority. There were also whispers about tight end Eric Ebron, another big target who might have added a different dimension to the offense.

Some mock drafts even had the Giants taking Aaron Donald. As great as he turned out, I never saw the Giants going that route. Jerry Reese, the GM at the time, always seemed to keep the defensive tackle position stocked. He also had a knack for finding talent at wide receiver, so in hindsight, maybe we should’ve trusted his instincts more.

Odell’s Talent Was Unforgettable—Even If It Was Brief.

Once Odell hit the field, everything changed. Despite the questions about his size, his speed, hands, and route-running were electric. That one-handed catch against Dallas? Instantly iconic. He brought energy and excitement back to the Giants’ offense, even if his time in New York was shorter than we’d hoped.

Looking back, I may not have seen it coming, but Odell Beckham Jr. was a game-changer.

Let’s address the obvious: this article is being written much later than usual. The disgust over how the season has played out made it difficult to revisit this game. However, as fans deserve a recap, here we are. We’ll also publish Sunday’s game against the Falcons later today, keeping the accountability going, even in tough times.

Malik Nabers Shines Despite the Loss

Malik Nabers managed a bright moment with his first touchdown since Week 3. Now sitting at 901 yards for the year, he’s just 99 yards shy of being the Giants’ first 1,000-yard receiver since Odell Beckham Jr. in 2018. If not for missing time with a concussion, Nabers would already have hit that milestone.

The Quarterback Situation Remains Grim

Tim Boyle threw the Giants’ first touchdown pass since Week 9, ending a month-long drought. Neither Drew Lock nor Tommy DeVito managed a touchdown during that span. DeVito, once a source of magic in 2023, now looks like the undrafted free agent he is. Injuries to both DeVito and Lock leave Boyle as the likely starter. The Giants should focus on finding a backup off the street to finish the season.

A Defense Outmatched by Lamar Jackson

The Ravens’ offense toyed with the Giants’ defense. Lamar Jackson barely needed the run game, as Baltimore’s passing attack tore through a battered secondary. Dane Belton, filling in for Tyler Nubin, stood out with 15 tackles and a sack, but the defense overall looked overwhelmed.

Familiar Calls for Change

For the ninth straight week, fans flew a banner over MetLife calling for change. John Mara insists Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll are safe, but history suggests he could change his mind. At 0-8 at home and on a nine-game losing streak, the Giants could finish winless at MetLife in 2024.

With three games left, the focus shifts to draft position. If the Raiders win another game, the Giants could lock in the No. 1 pick. As for Daniel Jones? He’s likely relieved to be watching this disaster unfold from the Minnesota sidelines.

There was some hope last offseason that joining forces with quarterback Lamar Jackson would usher in a statistical renaissance for Beckham, but he started slowly, suffered an ankle injury after just two weeks, and didn’t top the 50-yard mark in a game until Nov. 5. Even while Jackson played at an MVP level, it was rookie WR Zay Flowers who ended up emerging as the de facto WR1, though Beckham did finish second in yardage while averaging a career-high 16.1 yards per catch.

A free agent once again, Beckham landed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins. Despite checking in as the No. 3 receiver behind receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, the speed-oriented nature of head coach Mike McDaniel’s offense at least creates a level of intrigue for Beckham. As noted, the veteran hasn’t had much of an impact over the past four years, but the time he looked the most dangerous was during his postseason run with the Los Angeles Rams in 2021: 21 receptions, 288 yards, and two TDs in four games before tearing his ACL during the Super Bowl.

Despite some lean years, it’s hard to argue that Beckham won’t have an opportunity here. Last season, the Dolphins led the NFL in passing offense, but only Hill (1,799 yards) and Waddle (1,014) finished in the NFL’s top-100 in receiving yardage. The rest of Miami’s receivers — Cedrick Wilson, Braxton Berrios, Robbie Chosen, River Cracraft, and Chase Claypool — combined for 66 receptions, 807 yards, and six touchdowns; none of them reached 300 yards on the season.

On paper, Beckham is an upgrade, and he brings a couple of silver linings from last year into his new role. First, there was his aforementioned 16.1 YPC, which speaks to some resurgent big-play ability, and second, he played in 14 games, matching his highest total since 2019. If he can stay healthy and develop some chemistry with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, Beckham has a chance to emerge as a dangerous third option for the Dolphins.

Fantasy football outlook

The style and prolific nature of Miami’s offense dictates you at least keep tabs on the veteran, however, and if OBJ shows signs of being a meaningful contributor he could be worth scooping up as roster depth with a little upside. The likeliest path to fantasy production is an injury taking Waddle or Hill off the field for a long stretch of time.

Entering his age-32 season and four full years removed from his last semi-impactful effort, Beckham isn’t someone you can rely on.

The #NYG will say the #CLE offer blew them away. I still believe that was the only way they would trade Odell Beckham Jr. Should it have blown them away? Debatable but I’d say no. One thing: Never believe “don’t give up on talent” again.

Just talked to Odell Beckham Jr, who said he had a “brief” convo w/Dave Gettleman. “At this point I have no idea what to think. I’m trying to process it right now.” Said leaving #NYG is “bittersweet, but it is what it is. It’s life.”

1. The Giants are trading for Josh Rosen

We’ve already discussed the Kyler Murray rumors so we’ll leave that one alone for now. But Odell being traded? Our star wide receiver is up for grabs? His real favorite sport? I think not.

If you recall, rumors were floating around all season about Odell being traded. There were reports that the 49ers, Rams, and other teams were ‘in talks’ to get him. Look how well those rumors panned out.

Think about this as well; David Gettleman, after signing Odell to his monster 5 year 95 million dollar deal said, “We didn’t sign him to trade him”. That doesn’t sound like talk from a GM that wants to trade.

Now look at it from a more practical view. If we end up keeping Eli as our starter what would happen if we got rid of his favorite target? Sure we’ve got other great talent that can catch, but would we be helping ourselves in the long run? The simple answer is no.

And lastly… golf… yes. We heard rumors about Odell being a member in many golf courts and practicing each Saturday, even thinking about getting into competitions! Well, we think that is not a bad idea, he could even make commercials and get a lot a money, just thing about how much does a new golf drivers cost? Right? We are just gonna sit back and relax. Let’s see where this goes.

Josh Rosen Trade Rumors

Let’s switch gears a little bit here and tackle the Josh Rosen rumors. This one is a little more interesting to me. So the Cardinal’s (who hold the first pick) new head coach, Kliff Kingsbury, had been on record before stating that he “would take him (Murray) with the first pick of the draft”.

Think about that for a second. Why would a team need two first round talent quarterbacks? They wouldn’t; Josh Rosen could be available for a trade.

Logically a huge question is what would it cost the Giants to get him. I’m no expert on draft values so I’ll share what 24/7 Sports commented as a possible scenario for a trade.

“Some have speculated the Giants would have to trade the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft to acquire Rosen, but we don’t buy it. More likely, the Giants would send a package of draft picks to acquire Rosen that would include the No. 38 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft (the Giants’ second-round pick), a late-round 2019 draft pick, and a conditional 2020 draft pick.”

That seems like a doable scenario to me. Would the Giants actually benefit though? I think Rosen could develop well given the opportunity to sit behind a similar veteran quarterback in Eli Manning.
