The NFL has announced several rule changes for the 2025 season. These updates affect how overtime is played, how kickoffs are handled, and how replay assist will be used. There are also a few updates to free agency rules. Let’s break them down in a simple, easy-to-understand way.

Overtime Now Guarantees Possessions.

For the first time, regular season overtime will follow the postseason model. That means both teams are guaranteed at least one possession, even if the first team scores a touchdown.

However, the overtime period will still be limited to 10 minutes. If the game remains tied at the end of those 10 minutes, it will end in a tie—just like before.

This change brings a more balanced and fair approach to overtime, ensuring that both teams get a shot with the football.

Kickoffs Designed for More Action.

Another major change involves kickoffs. When a kickoff results in a touchback, the ball will now be placed at the 35-yard line instead of the 30.

The goal is to reduce touchbacks and encourage more returns, adding excitement and strategy back into the play.

Replay Assist Gets a Boost.

The NFL is expanding its replay assist system. Now, officials can use replay to overturn certain penalties—but only when the video evidence is clear and obvious.

The types of penalties eligible for review include:

Hits to defenseless players

Facemask grabs

Horse collar tackles

Tripping

Running into or roughing the kicker

This change aims to improve accuracy without slowing the game down too much.

Free Agency and “Tush Push” Update.

Teams are now allowed to hold Zoom calls and schedule visits with free agents during the legal tampering period. This rule will be tested for one year to see how it works.

Meanwhile, a proposal to ban the “tush push” quarterback sneak was discussed—but didn’t get enough support to pass. So, for now, that play stays in the game.

Make-or-Break Week for Daboll and Schoen.

With the NFL Draft just a week away, the New York Giants are staring down a franchise-altering decision—and time might be running out for head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen.

The pressure isn’t new. Their seats have been warm for months. But now, under the lights of draft week, the scrutiny is at a boiling point. On FS1’s Breakfast Ball, Craig Carton didn’t sugarcoat the situation: “The reason the Giants brought in both Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston is because their coach and their GM are basically on a prove-it year.”

Shedeur Sanders at No. 3? Mara May Be Calling the Shots.

Then came the shot from Danny Parkins: “If the Giants draft Shedeur Sanders, it’s not Brian Daboll or Joe Schoen who made the decision.”

https://twitter.com/BrkfstBallOnFS1/status/1912125810904871048

That’s a direct nod to team owner John Mara, who claims to stay out of personnel decisions—but seems to do the opposite when the stakes are high. He’s already made it clear that “finding a quarterback of the future” is priority number one. And when asked about how long Daboll and Schoen have to turn things around? His response was sharp: “Better not take too long because I’ve just about run out of patience.”

Giants Need to Win Now—And Get the Future Right.

Let’s not kid ourselves—this is a front office under fire. The Giants are picking at No. 3 in a draft with no surefire QB prospect, tasked with finding a franchise quarterback while trying to avoid another rebuild.

Organizational failure always starts at the top, and this one feels like it’s been brewing for years. I like Brian Daboll. I really do. But this is the biggest gamble of his career—and it’s being played with the owner’s fingerprints all over the cards.

🛍️ Rep the Team, No Matter What!

QB Market Watch: Who Needs a Signal Caller? The 2025 NFL Draft…

The post Predicting the QB Market in the 2025 NFL Draft first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

QB Market Watch: Who Needs a Signal Caller?

The 2025 NFL Draft isn’t considered deep at quarterback. Most experts agree there are only two to four quarterbacks with true first-round grades. But that doesn’t mean teams lacking stability under center can afford to sit back and wait.

A few big names stand out — Cam Ward (Miami), Shedeur Sanders (Colorado), Jaxson Dart (Ole Miss), and Jalen Milroe (Alabama) — as possible Day 1 picks. However, there are also intriguing Day 2 or 3 options, such as Kyle McCord (Syracuse) and Tyler Shough (Louisville), who could develop into solid pros with the right coaching and patience.

Let’s break down the teams that should seriously consider drafting a quarterback in 2025. Let’s start the list with the Giants — after all, this is a New York Giants blog.

New York Giants

The Giants are holding the No. 3 and No. 34 overall picks, and it’s hard to imagine they don’t at least consider drafting a quarterback — especially with uncertainty swirling around the futures of Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and Tommy DeVito.

If Cam Ward, widely projected to be the first overall pick, is off the board to Tennessee, that leaves Shedeur Sanders as the next high-profile option. However, it wouldn’t be surprising if GM Joe Schoen and HC Brian Daboll decide to pass on Sanders. While he’s an exciting talent, questions remain about his fit and readiness for an NFL offense.

Instead, the Giants may opt to draft a blue-chip player at No. 3 — someone who can make an immediate impact — and then circle back for a quarterback at No. 34 or with a move up from that spot. If that’s the case, Jaxson Dart or Jalen Milroe become intriguing targets. Both are raw but have athletic upside and strong arms that Daboll might believe he can mold into long-term starters.

This strategy would be a gamble, but it also reflects the tightrope the Giants’ leadership is walking. Schoen and Daboll need to win now, but they also need a quarterback who can grow with the team. Dart or Milroe wouldn’t be expected to start right away, allowing the veterans to hold the fort while a young prospect develops behind the scenes.

With pressure mounting and the future uncertain, the Giants’ approach to the quarterback position could define this regime’s legacy — for better or worse.

Tennessee Titans

Will Levis hasn’t cemented himself, and their backups are over 30 with limited starts. Owning the No. 1 overall pick likely puts them in line for Cam Ward, a strong-armed, athletic option who could fit into their new offensive identity..

Cleveland Browns

Deshaun Watson’s injuries and inconsistency have left the Browns in limbo. Kenny Pickett hasn’t impressed, and while Joe Flacco is back, that’s not a long-term solution. With the second and 33rd picks, Cleveland is in a strong position to reset the quarterback room early in the draft.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers are one Rodgers decision away from needing a new plan. Even if he signs, Pittsburgh’s long-term outlook isn’t secure with only Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson behind him. A first-round developmental QB makes a lot of sense here.

New Orleans Saints

Derek Carr is under contract through 2026, but that doesn’t tell the full story. His salary spikes to $40 million in 2026 — and none of it is guaranteed. More pressing, however, is the shoulder injury he sustained late last season. While the team has been optimistic publicly, there’s growing concern that Carr’s recovery could impact his availability for the 2025 season.

Given that uncertainty, it makes sense for the Saints to consider drafting a quarterback — especially with a new head coach in Kellen Moore now leading the way. Taking one at No. 9 might be a stretch unless Shedeur Sanders falls into their lap.

New York Jets

The Jets should let Justin Fields sink or swim in 2025. Tyrod Taylor, 35, is a capable veteran. Unless a top prospect is sitting there at No. 7 or 42, drafting a QB doesn’t feel urgent — but this is the Jets we’re talking about.

Los Angeles Rams

Matthew Stafford, 37, is near the end, and Jimmy Garoppolo, 33, is a temporary backup. Stetson Bennett remains unproven after missing most of his rookie year. If a QB like Dart falls to them at 26, the Rams may finally invest in their future at the position.

Las Vegas Raiders

Geno Smith, now 35, is under contract through 2027, but he’s clearly a short-term bridge. The Raiders appear to view Aidan O’Connell as a backup. With Carter Bradley still unproven, a Day 2 option like Shough or McCord may be worth a look.

Seattle Seahawks

Seattle handed Sam Darnold a sizable deal, but it’s not ironclad. They can move on next year if needed. With five picks in the top 92, GM John Schneider could easily take a swing if someone like Sanders drops to them. Their current backups, Sam Howell and Jaren Hall, are set to hit free agency next year.

Brooklyn are you ready for the Bolts & FXFL? The Bolts will bring professional football to Coney Island and it all kicks off tonight at MCU Park against The Boston Brawlers. Here is some info found on the Brooklyn Bolts website.

First, the Brooklyn Cyclones brought professional sports back to the borough for the first time in over 40 years. Now MCU Park will once again play host to a historic moment in Brooklyn sports history as the Brooklyn Bolts, a member of the newly formed FXFL, kick off their Inaugural Season this October.

The idea behind it is to give young men a chance to keep playing football, be able to be seen by scouts, and get film that they can show scouts so they can play—and at the same time have the seasons coincide with the National Football League so that if the NFL needs a player, there’s one ready to go. says Bolts Head Coach John Bock.

The FXFL kickoff will consist of 4 inaugural teams located in Miami, Boston, Omaha and of course said Brooklyn.

Our long-term goal is to establish a partnership with the NFL and we feel can do that on many platforms. Said Commissioner FXFL Brian Woods. It would give them a way to work with younger players that they don’t currently have. We can help them train prospective NFL officials – in the NBA, every referee entering the league (in recent years) comes from NBA Developmental League. We can be a testing ground for proposed rules, too.
