Based purely on talent, Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is near the top of the heap, boasting plus athleticism, a great arm, and the confidence to attempt just about any throw. His numbers haven’t been as impressive. After passing for 5,014 yards and 38 touchdowns in his sophomore season, the former Oregon Duck saw his output dip to 4,739 yards and 25 TDs in 2022, and then 3,134 yards with just 20 TDs last year. A

finger injury cost Herbert the final four games, but even projecting his numbers comes out to a relatively disappointing 4,098 yards and 26 TDs.

The only constant throughout Herbert’s four seasons has been change, playing under a trio of offensive coordinators (Shane Steichen, Joe Lombardi, and Kellen Moore). That continues in 2024 as new head coach Jim Harbaugh has brought Greg Roman along as OC. On the personnel side, the standout receiver tandem of Keenan Allen (Chicago Bears) and Mike Williams (New York Jets) are both gone, as is tight end Gerald Everett (Bears).

On the field, Allen, who caught 380 passes over the last four seasons, is the biggest loss. It’s the change off it that could make an even bigger difference, however, as the tandem of Harbaugh and Roman have made no secret about their desire to control the line of scrimmage and run the football. It’s a philosophy that was driven home by the selection of offensive tackle Joe Alt with the fifth overall pick in this year’s draft. LA also overhauled the running back room, signing former Baltimore Ravens J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards as the top two backs.

Fantasy football: 3 tight end sleepers to target in 2024

At receiver, the Bolts will try to replace Allen and Williams with returning talent Joshua Palmer (38-581-2 in 2023) and last year’s first-rounder Quentin Johnston (38-431-2), free-agent signee DJ Chark Jr. (35-525-5) with the Carolina Panthers), and second-round selection Ladd McConkey. There are some interesting names here, particularly if Johnston can develop into the player that thought they were getting with the 21st overall pick a year ago, but nobody comes with the track record of Williams, much less Allen.

Fantasy football outlook

A change in coaching, a change in offensive philosophy, and a change in personnel. Add it all up and it’s a lot to overcome for anyone, especially when you consider that Herbert has already seen his numbers trend in the wrong direction the past couple of years. That’s the glass half-empty perspective.

The optimistic viewpoint centers on Herbert’s skill set and a belief that you don’t pay a quarterback north of $50 million per season to have him throw 20 passes a game. He’s a tremendous talent, and he has shown a willingness throughout his career to target whoever is on the field in any situation, so don’t expect him to be gun shy with lesser known wideouts. Whether they can deliver is yet to be known.

While he’s best viewed as a QB2, Herbert carries viable upside. He may prove to be frustrating to play in fantasy, however.

The post Evaluating Justin Herbert’s fantasy football outlook first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

In terms of name value, wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. still moves the needle. When it comes to production on the field, however, OBJ has had little impact since his first season with the Cleveland Browns, when he caught 74 passes for 1,035 yards and four touchdowns in 2019. That includes last season as Beckham posted a 35-565-3 line with the Baltimore Ravens.

There was some hope last offseason that joining forces with quarterback Lamar Jackson would usher in a statistical renaissance for Beckham, but he started slowly, suffered an ankle injury after just two weeks, and didn’t top the 50-yard mark in a game until Nov. 5. Even while Jackson played at an MVP level, it was rookie WR Zay Flowers who ended up emerging as the de facto WR1, though Beckham did finish second in yardage while averaging a career-high 16.1 yards per catch.

A free agent once again, Beckham landed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins. Despite checking in as the No. 3 receiver behind receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, the speed-oriented nature of head coach Mike McDaniel’s offense at least creates a level of intrigue for Beckham. As noted, the veteran hasn’t had much of an impact over the past four years, but the time he looked the most dangerous was during his postseason run with the Los Angeles Rams in 2021: 21 receptions, 288 yards, and two TDs in four games before tearing his ACL during the Super Bowl.

We have a nearly 30-year track record of creating fantasy football champs. Sign up for The Huddle today to gain an award-winning edge on the competition!

Despite some lean years, it’s hard to argue that Beckham won’t have an opportunity here. Last season, the Dolphins led the NFL in passing offense, but only Hill (1,799 yards) and Waddle (1,014) finished in the NFL’s top-100 in receiving yardage. The rest of Miami’s receivers — Cedrick Wilson, Braxton Berrios, Robbie Chosen, River Cracraft, and Chase Claypool — combined for 66 receptions, 807 yards, and six touchdowns; none of them reached 300 yards on the season.

On paper, Beckham is an upgrade, and he brings a couple of silver linings from last year into his new role. First, there was his aforementioned 16.1 YPC, which speaks to some resurgent big-play ability, and second, he played in 14 games, matching his highest total since 2019. If he can stay healthy and develop some chemistry with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, Beckham has a chance to emerge as a dangerous third option for the Dolphins.

Fantasy football outlook

The style and prolific nature of Miami’s offense dictates you at least keep tabs on the veteran, however, and if OBJ shows signs of being a meaningful contributor he could be worth scooping up as roster depth with a little upside. The likeliest path to fantasy production is an injury taking Waddle or Hill off the field for a long stretch of time.

Entering his age-32 season and four full years removed from his last semi-impactful effort, Beckham isn’t someone you can rely on.

The post Will Odell Beckham Jr. even matter in fantasy this season? first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

New York Giants rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers is the team’s highest-rated player in Pro Football Focus’ PPR 400 for the upcoming 2024 NFL season.

In a fantasy mock draft based on the PPR (Point Per Reception) scoring system, analyst Nathan Jahnke listed the top 400 offensive players in ranked order.

Nabers was ranked 42nd overall and No. 22 among wide receivers. Running back Devin Singletary — the 31st rated at his position — was ranked 98 overall.

Wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson came in at No. 171 overall and No. 72 among wideouts. Quarterback Daniel Jones got no love at all, ranked 202nd overall and 30th overall at his position.

Others placed on the list: rookie running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. (No. 199 overall, No. 62 running back); wide receiver Jalin Hyatt (No. 212, No. 81 wide receiver); wide receiver Darius Slayton (217, 84); tight end Daniel Bellinger (250, TE 31); rookie tight end Theo Johnson (301, 39); quarterback Drew Lock (347, QB 38), the Giants’ defense (349, DEF 26) and kicker Graham Gano (391, PK 31).

Former Giants star running back Saquon Barkley, now with the Philadelphia Eagles, placed 13th overall on the list and fifth among running backs.

There are few surprises on the list given the Giants’ performance in 2023.

There is little to no confidence in Jones as he is ranked near the bottom of the starting quarterback rung and plenty of confidence in Lock, who despite telling the media that he’s firmly the backup, is ranked right outside the starter’s category.

Three newcomers — Nabers, Singletary, and Tracy — were ranked relatively high considering the rookies have yet to play a live down in the NFL and Singletary is on his third team in as many years.

The post Fantasy football: Malik Nabers is Giants’ highest-ranked player in PFF’s PPR 400 first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

Are The NY Giants Relevant Now? NY Giants 2020 Draft Review

The NY Giants 2020 NFL Draft went off without a hitch. Who thought that streaming would be an issue? The team held the 4th pick in 1st round and took Georgia OT Andrew Thomas. At the conclusion of the draft, Big Blue made 10 picks over the 7 rounds. For the most part, reviews from outlets such as CBS and the New York Post have been favorable. With that said… let’s get straight to the point. Will these draft picks assist the team in improving on a 2019 4-12 record?

What do the Odds Makers Say?

The Giants are projected to have a sub .500 record. A record that puts them at the bottom of the barrel within the NFC East. From the 2020 NFL Draft, Vegas oddsmakers have not exactly gone out of their way to adjust the teams OVER / UNDER win total line. As of today, the NY Giants OVER / UNDER win total line sits at 6 games. Comment below… what side of the fence are you sitting on? Are you leaning toward NYG OVER Or UNDER 6 Wins?

Some Of the Crew at Bleed Big Blue are optimistic that this team will be improved, while others are a little more NEGATIVE. Regardless, this year, when football returns (hopefully sooner, rather than later) we would play this OVER / UNDER NFL 2020 WINS game on StatementGames. In the past, you have heard us chat about StatementGames and the innovation they are bringing to the Fantasy Football industry. A 1-minute overview of how their platform is positioned can be seen in the video below:

https://youtu.be/Izy3jkCqGXo

From the video notice how their game combines traditional elements of Fantasy sports with prop betting. In addition to the StatementGames Web Site, the games they published can be accessed via the iOS App or Google Play App. This is a FREE 2 Play platform that gives you an opportunity to WIN REAL Cash!

Here is how this NFL 2020 OVER / UNDER WINS game works. Once you get into the game: 1. Review the list of all 31 NFL teams and their projected WIN Totals. 2. Make 10 Picks. From the list make 10 OVER / UNDER WIN Total projections. 3. Rank your projections in order of confidence from 10 through 1. (10 Being your most confident selection) 4. Make sure you save your selections

You are going to be playing in leagues of 8-12 NFL fans. As the season plays out, you will receive points for selections that become correct. Finish in the top three and receive StatementGames credits. Exchange your credits for cash REWARDS but if you WIN… and one of your selections was New York Giants UNDER 6 WINS… we hope you CHOKE on your REWARD!

New York Shuts Down DraftKings And Fan Duel.

An agreement was made between the Attorney General’s office, DraftKings & Fan Duel to stop paid fantasy sports effective immediately. Below is a snippet of DraftKings Official statement.

We are writing to let you know that, effective today, as part of a settlement reached with the Attorney General’s office, DraftKings will stop offering paid fantasy sports contests in New York State.

We understand that this news may be disappointing and we know that you are as passionate as we are about playing fantasy sports in NY. We will continue to work with state lawmakers to enact fantasy sports legislation, as we believe this to be the best path forward for New Yorkers to play the fantasy games they love.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman also released his own statement.

“As I’ve said from the start, my job is to enforce the law, and starting today, DraftKings and FanDuel will abide by it. Today’s agreement also creates an expedited path to resolve this litigation should that law change or upon a decision by the appellate division,”

With all the articles being published on this from sites like Bestuscasinos.org, it really looks like the debate of gambling vs skilled gaming is now heating up. Tune in and get interested.

Larry Donnell Fantasy Gem As the 2014 preseason came to an end,…

Larry Donnell Fantasy Gem

As the 2014 preseason came to an end, few offenses looked worse than the New York Giants’. Though they did not lose a preseason game, the first-team offense was woeful, as Eli Manning completed 20 passes out of 31 attempts for just 188 yards, and one touchdown in five games. Starting wideouts Victor Cruz and Rueben Randle combined for only seven catches, while first-round draft pick Odell Beckham, Jr. sat out the preseason with a lingering hamstring injury (he has yet to return).

The tight ends were even worse. Adrien Robinson, Daniel Fells, and Larry Donnell split reps, and it was impossible to tell which one would end up starting come the regular season. It didn’t really matter. No Giants tight end was going to do much in 2014, and anyone playing fantasy football knew it.

So when the Giants began the regular season in embarrassing fashion, getting hammered by Detroit 35-14 on Monday Night Football, most people failed to even register the fact that Larry Donnell played a pretty good fantasy game, catching five passes for 56 yards and a touchdown. He was targeted in the end zone no fewer than three times, and led the Giants in receptions, receiving yards, and targets.
In week two, the Giants were again humbled, this time by the Arizona Cardinals, but again Larry Donnell fantasy gem emerged, grabbing seven of his nine targets for 81 yards. He followed it up with a team-high six receptions against Houston in week three.

Despite three solid games in a row, Donnell was still owned in less than 20 percent of fantasy leagues as of Thursday morning.
This will change dramatically before the Giants play their next game though, as Donnell exploded for three touchdowns and 54 yards against the Redskins on Thursday night, and he is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon. He currently leads the team in receptions, targets, and obviously, touchdowns.
But Donnell is not the only Giants tight end outperforming expectations. Even backup Daniel Fells has found the end zone three times, which is more times than Jimmy Graham (a first-round fantasy pick in most leagues), Rob Gronkowski, Greg Olsen, Jason Witten, Zach Ertz, and Vernon Davis.

The success of the Giants’ tight ends is only possible because of the sudden resurgence of Eli Manning, who is off to one of the best fantasy seasons of his career. For starters, he has a 9-to-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He has thrown for just under 1,000 yards, and has even scampered for a rare rushing touchdown. After his 300-yard, four-touchdown performance on Thursday night, Eli Manning needs to be considered for a roster spot in all fantasy leagues.

Finally, 29-year-old running back Rashad Jennings is taking full advantage of his first real lead-back opportunity. After years of backing up Maurice Jones-Drew in Jacksonville, and then Darren McFadden in Oakland, Jennings is finally a featured runner in New York. So far, he has gained 331 yards on the ground, run for two touchdowns, and been heavily involved in the passing game, too. He has played like a true premier ball-carrier, and he currently ranks among the top five fantasy running backs.
The Giants offense had everybody fooled for a while, but their newfound consistency and production can no longer be ignored. They are a goldmine of waiver claims and free agent pickups for your fantasy league.

Deep Football Thoughts – Week 3

Trash Talk Is Coming From All Angles

The other day I get a notification on the FaceBook from an old high school friend who now lives in Texas. Yuk.

Dominique Lamay Denton posted to ‎James Doino

QB’s:

Jay Cutler – Bears – Love him this week as there will not be a lot of running room for Forte and the Jets can’t match up with the Bears WR’s.

Kurt Cousins – Redskins – Better fit for Gruden’s offense then RGKnee and the Eagles are in the top ten in the league for the most fantasy points given up to QB’s

Russell Wilson – Seahawks – Wilson will have his way and account for at least 3 TD’s — Book it.

Tom Brady – Patriots – Raiders at home after two tough matchups to open the season. Handsome goes off.

RB’s

Joique Bell – Lions – Starting to out carry and straight up out play Reggie Bush – Look for a big game against a porous Packers run defense.

Stevan Ridley – Patriots – Playing the Raiders at home. #EnoughSaid

Chris Ivory – Jets – Ivory will find the end zone at least once against the Bears.

Khiry Robinson – Saints – If you don’t know the name now you will be hearing it a lot over the next month. Pick him up.

Donald Brown – Chargers – He’s been a major fantasy contributor whenever he plays…he’s playing Sunday and will be the feature back for a offense that loves to run the ball.

WR’s:

Desean Jackson – Redskins – Playing his former team on the road and this guy loves playing the villain. Tough to sit him this week.

Marquis Colston – Saints – Colston had a off game last week but will get healthy against the Vikings.

Mike Wallace – Dolphins – Looks like the old Wallace of late…the strong 2014 campaign continues.

Victor Cruz – Giants – Salsa anyone? – Cruz finds the end zone in week 3.

DeAndre Hopkins – Texans – Just play him and inbox me with your thank you’s.

Cecil Shorts III – Jaguars – Boom! That just happened.

TE’s:

Jared Cook, Rams — Niles Paul, Redskins — Greg Olsen, Panthers — Charles Clay, Dolphins and of course….Zach Ertz, Eagles.

Picks Against the Spread –

Rough week 2 – (2-6) …the Trifecta took a beating last week. Week three got off to a good start last night as I provided a good buddy of mine with this advice…”Falcons -7” – So lets try to get back to the winning ways this week …Get it? Got It? Good!

Season Record — 21-18-2

Panthers -3 over the Steelers

Vikings @ Saints – Over 50

Jets +2.5 over the Bears

Cowboys -2 over the Rams

Redskins @ Eagles – Over 50.5

Giants +2.5 over the Texans

Seattle -4 over the Broncos

Enjoy the games this week and as always….Bleed Big Blue!!

The post Deep Football Thoughts – Week 3 first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.
