New York Giants Hire Matt Nagy as Offensive Coordinator

The New York Giants have completed another major piece of John Harbaugh’s coaching staff, hiring Matt Nagy as the team’s new offensive coordinator.

Nagy arrives in East Rutherford after spending the previous three seasons as the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator. His biggest responsibility will be helping develop rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart while building an offense around playmakers like Malik Nabers. With Harbaugh now in place as head coach, the Giants are hoping Nagy can help turn an offense that has struggled in recent years into one capable of competing with the NFL’s best.

Matt Nagy Brings Championship Experience

Matt Nagy, 47, brings plenty of NFL experience to the Giants.

Before returning to Kansas City, he spent four seasons as the Chicago Bears’ head coach from 2018 through 2021. Prior to that, he established himself as one of the league’s rising offensive coaches while working under Andy Reid with the Chiefs.

Over the last three seasons, Nagy served as Kansas City’s offensive coordinator, helping the Chiefs remain one of the NFL’s premier offenses. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Giants identified Nagy as the right coach to oversee the development of Jaxson Dart while leading John Harbaugh’s offense.

Developing Jaxson Dart Is the Top Priority

There’s no question what Nagy’s biggest assignment will be.

The Giants invested heavily in Jaxson Dart as their quarterback of the future, and now it’s up to the coaching staff to help him reach his potential. Nagy has spent years around elite quarterback play and one of the NFL’s most successful offensive systems.

He’ll also have one of the league’s brightest young receivers in Malik Nabers to build around, giving the Giants a solid foundation as they begin a new era on offense.

If Dart develops into the franchise quarterback everyone hopes he can become, this hire will be viewed as one of the most important decisions John Harbaugh made.

My Take

I’ll be honest, I’m a little iffy on this hire.

From everything that’s been reported, it sounds like Todd Monken was John Harbaugh’s first choice to run the offense. Monken had spent the previous few seasons as Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator in Baltimore, and there was already a proven working relationship between the two.

However, once Monken accepted the Cleveland Browns head coaching job, Harbaugh had to pivot. That’s when Matt Nagy entered the picture.

On paper, Nagy has an impressive résumé. He’s been an NFL head coach, won Super Bowls as part of the Chiefs organization, and spent years learning under Andy Reid. Those are all positives.

My hesitation comes down to one thing: play-calling experience.

From everything we’ve seen, Andy Reid has remained heavily involved in calling plays in Kansas City. During Nagy’s time in Chicago, there were also stretches where play-calling responsibilities shifted.

Being an offensive coordinator is one thing. Calling plays on Sundays is another.

That doesn’t mean Nagy can’t succeed. Sometimes a coach simply needs the opportunity to run his own offense. But if this was truly Harbaugh’s Plan B after missing out on Todd Monken, it’s fair to wonder whether the Giants landed the coach they originally envisioned.

I’m absolutely willing to give Nagy a chance because, at the end of the day, all that matters is whether he helps Jaxson Dart become the franchise quarterback we’ve all been waiting for. If that happens, nobody will care whether he was Plan A or Plan B.

Final Thoughts

With Matt Nagy now leading the offense and Dennard Wilson taking over the defense, John Harbaugh has assembled an experienced coaching staff for his first season in New York.

Now comes the hard part.

The Giants have invested in a young quarterback, assembled talented pieces around him, and brought in a coaching staff with plenty of NFL experience. The expectation is that this group can finally build a consistent offensive identity while helping Jaxson Dart continue his development.

Time will tell if Nagy proves to be the right choice, but he’ll certainly be one of the most closely watched assistants on Harbaugh’s staff throughout the 2026 season.
