Why the New York Giants Should Extend Kayvon Thibodeaux Now

by Marco Ceo

The Giants Don’t Need to Choose Between Their Pass Rushers.

The New York Giants have several important contract decisions on the horizon, but one player stands out as someone they should lock up sooner rather than later. Kayvon Thibodeaux may not command the same salary as the NFL’s top edge rushers, but there’s a strong argument that the Giants should negotiate an extension now before his value climbs even higher.

With the team’s salary cap in good shape and a talented young core in place, extending Thibodeaux could prove to be a smart long-term investment.

Kayvon Thibodeaux Brings More Than Just Sacks

Pass-rushing numbers often dominate conversations about edge defenders, but Thibodeaux offers much more than that. While Brian Burns is one of the league’s most explosive pass rushers and Abdul Carter has tremendous upside, Thibodeaux provides a more complete skill set.

He has consistently shown the ability to set the edge against the run, hold his ground, and play disciplined football. Those traits don’t always generate headlines, but they are critical for a successful defense.

A defense needs players who can stay on the field in every situation. Thibodeaux has demonstrated that he can contribute whether the offense is running the ball or dropping back to pass. That versatility makes him an important piece of what the Giants are building under head coach John Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson.

Three Elite Edge Rushers Can Change Everything

Some fans may wonder if the Giants can justify paying Thibodeaux with Burns already under contract and Carter expected to become a cornerstone of the defense. The better question may be: why wouldn’t they?

The NFL has become a league where teams rotate pass rushers to keep them fresh throughout the game. Injuries are inevitable over a 17-game season, and having three high-level edge defenders gives the Giants a luxury that few teams possess.

Even if Thibodeaux isn’t the team’s top sack producer every year, his ability to play the run, generate pressure, and complement Burns and Carter creates one of the deepest pass-rushing groups in football.

That kind of depth can be the difference between a good defense and a championship-caliber one.

Leadership Matters Too

There’s another reason to prioritize a contract extension: Thibodeaux’s presence off the field.

By all accounts, he has become a respected voice in the locker room and a leader within the organization. Teams aren’t just paying for production anymore. They’re investing in culture, consistency, and players who help establish the identity of the franchise.

Those qualities become even more valuable as younger players develop around them.

The Giants Should Be Proactive

Waiting another season could end up costing the Giants significantly more money if Thibodeaux puts together a career year. While he may not be seeking the same contract as the NFL’s highest-paid edge rushers, his market value is unlikely to decrease if he continues to produce.

The Giants have the financial flexibility to get a deal done today. Rather than risking a bidding war later, they could secure one of their foundational defensive players now and maintain one of the league’s deepest edge-rushing rotations for years to come.

Sometimes the smartest contracts are the ones signed before everyone else realizes just how valuable the player has become. This is why the New York Giants should extend Kayvon Thibodeaux now!
