Giants Comeback Falls Short, but McCarthy Offers New Hope

by Marco Ceo

J.J. McCarthy sparked a late rally, but costly mistakes doomed the Giants against the Saints. His performance gives New York renewed hope and a quarterback decision heading into Houston.

McCarthy Gives the Giants a Spark

The Giants’ comeback falls short, but McCarthy offers new hope after a frustrating 34–27 loss to the Saints in Week 6. New York showed life late, turning a 34–10 deficit into a competitive finish behind its backup quarterback. Unfortunately, the rally could not erase the turnovers, penalties and defensive breakdowns that put the Giants in that position. The result leaves John Harbaugh with plenty to address, including a decision about who should start at quarterback.

McCarthy Changes the Conversation

J.J. McCarthy gave the Giants an immediate boost after replacing Jameis Winston, throwing for 243 yards and a touchdown despite an interception. His mobility helped him escape pressure, extend plays and create opportunities downfield. An offense that had struggled to find its footing suddenly looked capable of threatening New Orleans. Although the comeback fell short, McCarthy made a compelling case for a larger opportunity.

One productive quarter does not guarantee that McCarthy is the answer, but it should put him firmly in the conversation to start against Houston. Winston’s inconsistency had already been evident during the Giants’ win over the Cardinals, and his performance against New Orleans did little to strengthen his hold on the job. McCarthy brought a different energy, using his mobility to extend plays and create opportunities downfield. Harbaugh now must decide whether that spark warrants a change under center.

Giants Leave Their Running Game Behind

The Giants faced the NFL’s 30th-ranked run defense but failed to take advantage of what appeared to be a favorable matchup. They had previously shown the value of a physical ground attack during their hard-fought win over Tennessee, but that identity was missing against New Orleans. McCarthy finished as New York’s leading rusher with 26 yards on two attempts, highlighting how little the running backs contributed. Keeping Cam Skattebo on the sideline appeared to disrupt the offense’s rhythm and left the Giants without a dependable rushing attack.

Holding Skattebo accountable for ball security is understandable, but the response also needs to leave the offense with a workable plan. His ability to fight through contact and pick up tough yards can help prevent difficult passing situations. If the coaching staff no longer trusts him as its lead back, it needs to identify someone who can handle that responsibility. Whether the answer is already on the roster or requires exploring outside options, abandoning the run cannot become the solution.

Costly Mistakes Turn a Lead Into a Deficit

The Giants appeared to be in a comfortable position with a 10–3 lead before Charlie Jones’ kickoff-return fumble helped change the game. The turnovers and penalties against Arizona had already provided warning signs, but New York again struggled to avoid costly mistakes. Missed tackles extended possessions for the Saints, while penalties made it harder to regain control. Against a New Orleans team that entered at 1–4, those breakdowns turned a promising start into a desperate comeback attempt.

The defense also failed to record a sack of Tyler Shough despite generating some pressure. Brian Burns’ absence continues to hurt, and Kayvon Thibodeaux did not provide the impact the Giants needed. His personal-foul penalty stood out on an afternoon when New York needed drive-ending defensive plays. The Saints also rushed for 175 yards at 4.6 yards per carry, exposing problems that went beyond the pass rush.

Nabers and Likely Provide Reasons for Optimism

Malik Nabers delivered another outstanding performance, finishing with 12 receptions for 165 yards. It was his third consecutive game over 100 receiving yards, continuing an encouraging stretch for the Giants’ top target. Even when the offense struggled, Nabers remained a consistent source of production. His connection with McCarthy during the rally offers something to build on if the Giants make a quarterback change.

Isaiah Likely also played a major role, catching six passes for 99 yards and a touchdown. Since joining the Giants in free agency, he has become a dependable option in the passing game. Likely nearly hauled in the potential game-tying catch, coming close to helping New York complete its comeback. Along with Nabers, he gave the Giants enough receiving production to make the missed opportunity sting even more.

Giants Must Carry Their Late Energy Into Houston

Dominic Zvada provided another positive by converting both field-goal attempts following his difficult outing in the rain. The Giants also deserve credit for continuing to compete after falling behind by 24 points. McCarthy helped restore belief, and New York made the Saints work to finish the game. Still, that fight does not excuse the mistakes that made such a dramatic rally necessary.

Despite going two straight games without a victory, the Giants will enter Week 7 atop the NFC East. They now head to Houston seeking their first road win against a Texans team coming off a victory over Jacksonville in London. A clearer rushing plan, better tackling and fewer penalties will be essential regardless of who starts at quarterback. McCarthy offered hope against the Saints, but the Giants need a complete performance to turn that hope into a win.
