Giants Overcome Costly Mistakes to Take Down Cardinals

by Marco Ceo

The Giants overcame turnovers and penalties to defeat the Cardinals 36-24. Deonte Banks’ late pick-six sealed the Week 4 win as New York improved to 3-1.

The New York Giants gave the Arizona Cardinals opportunities to spoil their afternoon, but timely defensive plays and an explosive finish helped them escape with a 36-24 victory in Week 4. Despite turnovers, penalties and an inconsistent running game, New York improved to 3-1 and remained unbeaten at home.

After last week’s dramatic win over the Titans, the Giants once again relied on a late interception to finish the job. Deonte Banks delivered the deciding blow with a game-sealing pick-six, marking the second straight week the Giants secured a victory with a late interception. There is plenty to clean up, but a team dealing with significant injuries continues to find ways to win—and now enters October atop the NFC East.

Deonte Banks Turns Frustration Into Redemption

Banks experienced both extremes of a pressure-packed finish. In roughly five minutes, he went from being flagged for a questionable pass interference call to putting the game away with an interception return for a touchdown.

After missing several weeks, Banks returned with the kind of moment that can help rebuild a player’s confidence. His previous struggles won’t disappear because of one play, but responding to adversity with the biggest takeaway of the afternoon was an encouraging step forward.

Jameis Winston Delivers Big Plays—and Costly Mistakes

Following Winston’s difficult outing against the Rams, his ability to connect downfield against Arizona was an encouraging sign.

Three touchdown passes and two interceptions told the story of another eventful Winston performance. A difficult first quarter had some fans calling for J.J. McCarthy before Winston settled in and began connecting on the bigger throws the offense needed.

The arm strength that had appeared to be missing earlier suddenly returned, allowing New York to challenge Arizona downfield. Those throws helped bring the offense to life, but the interceptions also gave the Cardinals opportunities to stay in the game.

That is the balance the Giants need Winston to find: keeping his willingness to attack while cutting down on avoidable mistakes. He made enough plays to win Sunday, but better ball security would make life easier for everyone involved.

Malik Nabers Leads as Other Targets Step Up

Malik Nabers provided a much-needed spark with a 100-yard receiving performance and a touchdown. He is gradually finding his rhythm again, giving Winston a dangerous option as the offense works toward greater consistency.

Malachi Fields added his first NFL touchdown catch, continuing to improve and make important receptions when called upon. Theo Johnson also contributed a clutch catch and his first touchdown of the season, giving the Giants another timely boost.

Isaiah Likely remained a valuable third-down target, helping New York convert 7 of 15 opportunities. His ability to make key grabs and extend possessions continues to be an important part of this offense.

Running Game Struggles, but Commitment Helps

The Giants managed just 87 rushing yards at 3.3 yards per carry, making it difficult to consistently stay ahead of the chains. The ground game never became a reliable source of production, leaving the offense searching for other ways to move the ball.

New York stayed committed to the run, an important part of making life easier for Jameis Winston. The production needs to improve, but that persistence helped create opportunities through play action and gave Winston another way to find openings in Arizona’s defense.

Arvell Reese and the Pass Rush Make Their Presence Felt

Arvell Reese delivered another impressive performance, finishing with nine tackles, one tackle for loss and an interception. He was consistently around the football, making stops and helping a defense that needed to come up with answers throughout the afternoon.

The pass rush also showed improvement, producing two sacks and repeatedly putting pressure in Jacoby Brissett’s face. Abdul Carter became more disruptive late in the game, contributing during a stretch when the Giants needed to make the quarterback uncomfortable.

With Brian Burns out for the season, New York needs multiple players to help generate that pressure. Sunday’s showing offered an encouraging sign that the defense can get those contributions across the lineup.

Takeaways Save the Day, but Cleanup Is Necessary

The Giants finished with three takeaways, giving themselves chances to overcome their own mistakes. Banks’ pick-six was the defining moment, but the defense’s ability to create extra possessions mattered throughout the game.

On the other side, turnovers and penalties continued to make the afternoon harder than it needed to be. New York cannot expect a game-saving interception every week, making cleaner execution a priority as the schedule moves forward.

Winning while making mistakes shows resilience, but correcting those mistakes is the next step. The Giants have an opportunity to build on this start if they can stop giving opponents extra chances.

Dominic Zvada and Jordan Stout Remain Reliable

Dominic Zvada continued his perfect start on NFL field-goal attempts, showing that distance and difficult weather have yet to shake his confidence. His ability to connect from beyond 50 yards and deliver in the rain has given the Giants a dependable option when drives stall.

Jordan Stout also continued to contribute through field position, pairing booming punts with the placement to pin opponents deep. That combination helps the defense and remains a valuable part of New York’s early success.

Giants Take a 3-1 Record Into a Divisional Test

Losing Jaxson Dart and Burns for the season raised serious questions about the Giants’ outlook. Instead of allowing those injuries to define their start, New York has reached 3-1, won all three home games and moved into first place in the NFC East.

The Cardinals game showed both why the Giants are winning and what could threaten that progress. They have players capable of delivering in crucial moments, but turnovers and penalties continue to leave too much hanging in the balance.

Next up are the Washington Commanders and a chance to earn another divisional victory. Cleaning up those mistakes would put the Giants in a stronger position to protect their early NFC East lead.
