The Giants overcame costly mistakes to escape Washington with a 27-27 overtime tie. Jameis Winston’s comeback helped New York hold first place in the NFC East heading into Week 6.
The New York Giants overcame a sluggish start and survived costly mistakes to hold first place in the NFC East after a 27-27 overtime tie with the Washington Commanders in Week 5. On a rainy, windy afternoon, Jameis Winston helped rally New York from a two-score deficit, but missed field goals and a late fumble kept the Giants from finishing the job.
Losses by the Cowboys and Eagles left the Giants with a 1.5-game division lead heading into Week 6. That makes the result easier to accept, even if New York left Washington knowing it had opportunities to come away with more than a tie.
After overcoming costly mistakes to beat the Cardinals in Week 4, the Giants found themselves battling familiar problems in Washington.
Jameis Winston Turns a Rough Start Into a Comeback
Jameis Winston’s afternoon was a tale of two halves. He struggled badly before halftime, leaving the offense searching for answers and raising the question of whether J.J. McCarthy should get a longer look.
McCarthy entered for a few plays, although penalties wiped out some of his throws. Those limited opportunities offered little clarity before Winston finally found his rhythm after the break.
Winston looked much sharper in the second half, helping the Giants erase a two-score deficit and finishing with three touchdown passes. His turnaround kept New York alive, but the Giants need more consistency to avoid relying on another comeback.
Malik Nabers and Isaiah Likely Lead the Passing Attack
Malik Nabers delivered another encouraging performance as he continues getting back into the rhythm of playing regularly. He finished with 11 catches for 121 yards and a touchdown, giving Winston a reliable target as the Giants worked their way back into the game.
Isaiah Likely was equally productive, catching 11 passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns. Together, Nabers and Likely provided the offensive spark New York needed after its frustrating start.
Performances like this show why the Giants made Isaiah Likely a major offseason addition.
Missed Field Goals Leave Points on the Board
Dominic Zvada entered the game perfect on the season, but the difficult weather contributed to a rough afternoon. He missed three of his five field-goal attempts, including an overtime kick that would have given the Giants the lead.
Zvada still connected twice in the rain and wind, and New York’s missed opportunities extended well beyond the kicking game. Unfortunately, a late turnover prevented him from getting another chance at a potential game-winning field goal.
Cam Skattebo’s Fumble Adds to Ball Security Concerns
Cam Skattebo had started finding a rhythm late in the game, delivering important runs and picking up first downs. Then came the mistake that overshadowed that progress: a lost fumble late in overtime.
The Giants have to address ball security among their running backs, especially when one possession can decide the outcome. Skattebo’s turnover put New York in danger of losing a game it had fought hard to salvage.
Washington ultimately helped the Giants escape by mishandling the clock in the final seconds of overtime. The Commanders’ lack of game awareness allowed New York to leave with a tie despite another costly mistake.
Five Sacks Cannot Hide the Giants’ Run Defense Problems
The Giants’ pass rush had productive moments, recording five sacks of Jayden Daniels. Dru Phillips accounted for two of those sacks, providing a bright spot on an otherwise difficult defensive afternoon.
Containing Daniels as a runner was a different story. He rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns, repeatedly hurting New York with his mobility and making a stronger case for assigning a defender to spy on him.
Washington finished with 202 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries, averaging 6.7 yards per attempt. As encouraging as the sacks were, the Giants could not consistently get the stops they needed on the ground.
Giants Return Home With NFC East Lead Intact
The Giants remain winless on the road, and this was another chance to change that. Considering the missed kicks, struggles against the run and overtime fumble, though, avoiding a loss still matters.
Their dramatic win over the Titans was another example of finding a way through a difficult game at home.
New York now returns home, where it is 3-0, with an opportunity to build on that success in Week 6. Better ball security, a steadier offensive start and improved run defense will be essential to protecting its division lead.
The Giants did enough to avoid a loss and hold first place, but the mistakes that nearly cost them in Washington cannot become a weekly habit. Their comeback showed resilience; turning that effort into wins will require cleaner football in the weeks ahead.
