The New York Giants Open the John Harbaugh Era With an Impressive Win Over The Dallas Cowboys
It’s only Week 1, and we certainly don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves. But after the New York Giants opened the 2026 season with a 28-20 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football, Giants fans finally have a reason to be excited about what this season could become.
The Giants didn’t just beat Dallas. They controlled long stretches of the game, played physical football on both sides of the line of scrimmage, and looked like a team with a clear identity in John Harbaugh’s first game as head coach. For a franchise that has spent too many recent seasons digging out of an early hole, starting 1-0 with a divisional win feels significant.
Jaxson Dart Delivers in the Opener
If the Giants are going to take a major step forward this season, it starts with Jaxson Dart, and the second-year quarterback couldn’t have asked for a much better beginning. Dart completed 23 of 29 passes for 230 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, finishing with a 134.2 passer rating while also adding 54 yards on the ground.
More importantly, Dart looked comfortable running the offense. He was accurate, made plays in critical situations and repeatedly helped the Giants extend drives, with New York converting nine of its first 10 third-down opportunities before the final kneel-down sequence.
Dart also made some NFL history, becoming the first quarterback to open a season with at least three touchdown passes, 50 rushing yards and a passer rating of 130 or higher. That’s quite a way to start Year 2.
Isaiah Likely Makes an Immediate Impact
One of the Giants’ biggest offseason additions didn’t take long to make his presence felt. Isaiah Likely caught all eight of his targets for 78 yards and two touchdowns in his Giants debut, giving Dart another dangerous weapon in the passing game.
Both touchdowns came from Dart, including a 15-yard score in the second quarter and another from two yards out in the third. Likely’s presence alongside Malik Nabers could add an entirely different dimension to the Giants offense this season.
Nabers also made his return after last season’s knee injury and finished with six receptions for 69 yards on nine targets. Having Nabers and Likely on the field together gives Dart two legitimate matchup problems for opposing defenses.
Giants Establish Their Identity on the Ground
If Sunday’s opener was our first look at what John Harbaugh wants Giants football to become, the message was pretty clear: physical, tough and able to control the line of scrimmage.
The Giants rushed for 165 yards while holding Dallas to just 69. Cam Skattebo led the way with 81 yards on 18 carries and scored the first touchdown of the Giants’ season on a three-yard run.
New York’s ability to run the football became even more important in the second half. The Giants controlled possession for more than 21 minutes after halftime and limited Dallas to only two possessions, allowing Big Blue to protect its lead and finish the game on its terms.
The Defense Did Its Part
The Giants offense will get plenty of attention after scoring four touchdowns, but the defense deserves its share of the credit. Dallas finished with only 244 total yards, including 69 on the ground, while Dak Prescott was held to 175 passing yards.
The Cowboys averaged just 3.8 yards per rushing attempt. For a Giants team that wants to win with physicality, controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the football was one of the most encouraging developments of the night.
A Different Feeling at MetLife Stadium
There was also something about the atmosphere surrounding this win that felt different. The Giants opened the John Harbaugh era at home, under the lights, against the Dallas Cowboys, and gave the MetLife Stadium crowd something to feed off from the opening drive.
New York never trailed, marching 83 yards on its first possession and finishing the drive with Skattebo’s touchdown to immediately establish the tone. Instead of waiting for something to go wrong, the Giants dictated the game and made Dallas respond to them.
That energy continued throughout the night, with the MetLife crowd becoming a factor in key moments. Dart acknowledged afterward that Giants fans helped swing momentum and create chaos for the Cowboys offense, something that was noticeable even for those watching the game from home.
Don’t Get Ahead of Ourselves, But…
This is where we have to pump the brakes just a little because it’s still only Week 1. NFL teams can look completely different by Week 4, Week 8 or December, and one victory doesn’t tell us what the 2026 Giants will ultimately become.
Still, there were questions throughout the NFC East entering this season. There were questions about Dallas and Washington, while Philadelphia entered the year with changes of its own, and there were certainly plenty of questions surrounding the Giants.
On Sunday night, we started getting some answers. The Giants looked physical, Dart looked confident, the running game worked, the offensive line moved people, the defense stopped the run, and Harbaugh’s team finished the game when it had the opportunity.
That’s a pretty good list of positives for Week 1.
Could This Giants Season Get Interesting?
That’s really the question coming out of Sunday night. Nobody should be making playoff plans after one game, but if the Giants can build on this performance and get off to a hot start, the outlook for the 2026 season could change very quickly.
For the first time in a while, Giants fans can look ahead at the schedule and wonder what might be possible instead of wondering when things are going to fall apart. Next comes another major test, this time on the road against the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football.
It’s one week at a time, but after a 28-20 victory over Dallas to begin the John Harbaugh era, Big Blue has our attention. This season suddenly has the potential to be a lot of fun.
