The New York Giants open the 2026 season under the lights at MetLife Stadium against the Dallas Cowboys, and if Big Blue wants to start the year 1-0, they are going to have to play a physical, disciplined football game from the opening kick. The Giants have enough talent to make this interesting, but they cannot afford to give Dallas easy opportunities.
New York needs to control the line of scrimmage, protect Jaxson Dart, create pressure on Dak Prescott, and make the Cowboys earn every yard. Here are five keys to beating Dallas in Week 1.
1. Run the Ball
The Giants need to establish the ground game early and stay committed to it. Cam Skattebo gives New York the physical running style that can wear down a defense, while the addition of Najee Harris gives the Giants another proven option in the backfield.
That combination should allow the Giants to keep fresh legs on the field and attack Dallas in different ways. Running the football successfully also takes pressure off Jaxson Dart, especially if New York can stay ahead of the chains and avoid obvious passing situations where Dallas can simply attack the quarterback.
The Giants do not need to dominate on the ground, but they need enough production from Skattebo, Harris, and the offensive line to keep the Cowboys defense honest. Controlling the tempo on the ground would also help keep Dak Prescott and the Dallas offense standing on the sideline.
2. Get to Dak Prescott
The Giants have invested heavily in their pass rush, and Week 1 is the time for that group to make an impact. Kayvon Thibodeaux, Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, and rookie linebacker Arvell Reese give New York multiple ways to attack Prescott.
The Giants cannot allow Dak to sit comfortably in the pocket and work through his reads. Pressure does not always have to result in a sack, because forcing him off his spot, collapsing the pocket, getting hands into passing lanes, and speeding up his internal clock can all disrupt the Dallas offense.
New York has enough athleticism up front to create problems, and the key will be turning that talent into consistent pressure. If the Giants can make Prescott uncomfortable from the opening drive, it could change the entire rhythm of the game.
3. Do Not Allow Explosive Plays
Dallas is going to move the football at times, but the Giants cannot allow them to do it in huge chunks. One missed tackle, one busted coverage, or one bad angle can completely change a game, especially against an offense with the ability to strike quickly.
New York needs to keep everything in front, tackle well in space, and prevent short completions from turning into explosive gains. If Dallas has to put together long, sustained drives, it gives the Giants pass rush more opportunities to create negative plays and gives the defense more chances to force a mistake.
Make Dallas earn everything.
That should be the mindset for the Giants defense throughout the night, because limiting explosive plays could be the difference between forcing a field goal and giving up a quick touchdown.
4. Keep Jaxson Dart Clean and Out of the Blue Tent
This may be the most important key of the night. The Giants need Jaxson Dart upright, comfortable, and most importantly, out of the blue medical tent.
Dart plays with an aggressive style, and that is part of what makes him exciting, but New York cannot afford to have its quarterback taking unnecessary hits. The offensive line has to protect him, the running game has to help keep the Dallas pass rush honest, and Dart himself has to recognize when a play is over.
That means throwing the ball away when necessary, getting out of bounds, sliding instead of taking an extra hit, and living to play the next snap. The Giants need Dart for the entire season, not just for one highlight-reel play in Week 1.
If New York can keep him clean and allow him to settle into the game, he should have opportunities to make plays with both his arm and his legs.
5. Win the Turnover Battle
Season openers can get sloppy, with timing still developing and both teams adjusting to regular-season speed. The Giants need to make sure Dallas is the team making more of those mistakes.
Protecting the football is especially important with a young quarterback. New York does not need Dart forcing throws into tight windows or trying to create something when nothing is there, while the defense needs to hunt for takeaways whenever opportunities appear.
With Thibodeaux, Burns, Carter, and Reese attacking Prescott, there should be chances for strip sacks, rushed throws, and tipped passes. One takeaway can flip the field, and multiple turnovers can completely change the game.
If the Giants can finish Sunday night on the positive side of the turnover margin, they give themselves a much better chance to leave MetLife 1-0.
Final Thoughts
The Giants do not need to play a perfect game to beat Dallas, but they do need to play a smart one. Run the football with Cam Skattebo and Najee Harris, let Kayvon Thibodeaux, Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, and Arvell Reese get after Dak Prescott, eliminate explosive plays, keep Jaxson Dart upright and out of the blue tent, and win the turnover battle.
Do those five things, and Big Blue has a real opportunity to make a statement on opening night and start the 2026 season 1-0.
