As training camp gets closer, one question continues to pop up among Giants fans: Should the New York Giants bring back Bobby Okereke?
It’s a fair question. Despite spending the offseason on the free-agent market, Okereke remains unsigned. Considering his production just a couple of seasons ago, it’s surprising that an experienced linebacker is still waiting for his next opportunity.
So, should the Giants consider a reunion?
Bobby Okereke Wasn’t Great, But He Wasn’t Bad Either
There’s no denying that Okereke took a step back last season. Like much of the Giants defense, his production dipped as the team struggled through an inconsistent year. Still, it’s difficult to argue that his performance was poor enough to keep him off an NFL roster.
Just one season earlier, Okereke was one of the Giants’ most reliable defenders. He was on the field for virtually every defensive snap, consistently led the team in tackles, and served as one of the leaders of the defense. Players don’t usually go from that level of production to being unable to help an NFL team overnight.
Why Is He Still Available?
That’s the part that makes this situation so interesting. When a veteran with Okereke’s résumé remains unsigned this late into the offseason, fans naturally start asking questions. Is there an injury concern that hasn’t been made public?
Is he waiting for the right opportunity? Or are NFL teams simply waiting until training camp, when injuries inevitably create a need for experienced linebackers? Without inside information, it’s impossible to know. But from the outside, it feels unusual.
Would a Reunion Make Sense?
The Giants have gotten younger on defense and are looking to build a tougher, more physical identity under head coach John Harbaugh. That doesn’t mean there’s no room for a veteran.
If Bobby Okereke were willing to return on a veteran minimum contract, bringing back an experienced linebacker who already knows the organization could be a low-risk move. He understands the expectations, has proven he can handle a heavy workload, and could provide valuable depth and leadership throughout a long NFL season.
That doesn’t mean he would automatically earn a starting job, but adding experienced competition is rarely a bad thing.
There May Be No Hurry
Veteran free agents often remain available well into training camp. Every summer, injuries create openings across the league, and experienced players suddenly become valuable additions. It’s entirely possible that Okereke is simply waiting for the right fit instead of rushing to sign with the first team that calls.
Whether that’s the Giants or another organization remains to be seen.
Final Thoughts
The New York Giants have moved forward with a younger roster, but Bobby Okereke’s continued availability is still surprising.
While a reunion may not be the team’s top priority, it shouldn’t be dismissed either. If the price is right and both sides have interest, bringing back a proven veteran could strengthen the linebacker room without a significant financial commitment.
