The New York Giants may not be making headlines with their kicker competition, but it’s a battle worth keeping an eye on as training camp approaches. After what I saw during OTAs, I believe Dominic Zvada Could Win the New York Giants Kicker Job, and right now I’d consider him the front-runner heading into camp.
With OTAs now complete, the Giants have wrapped up their spring practices and will soon report for training camp. While nothing has been officially decided, I think Zvada has put himself in a great position to win the job.
The Giants Have Narrowed the Competition
Earlier this offseason, the Giants made the decision to release Jason Sanders, trimming the competition down to Ben Sauls and rookie Dominic Zvada. That’s when I really started paying attention to this battle.
It’s easy to overlook the kicker position during the offseason, but every year we see games decided by one kick. If the Giants expect to compete this season, they’ll need confidence in whoever earns the job. At this point, I think Zvada has earned that opportunity.
A Different Approach Under John Harbaugh
One thing that has stood out to me is how differently the Giants have handled the position compared to last season.
Under Brian Daboll, it felt like the team was constantly reacting to injuries. Graham Gano battled multiple injuries, kickers were shuffled on and off the roster, and there never seemed to be much stability.
This offseason has felt much more organized. I don’t know if that’s entirely because of John Harbaugh, but I have to believe his background in special teams has played a role. Harbaugh built his coaching career on paying attention to every phase of the game, and special teams has never felt like an afterthought for his teams.
To me, that’s one of the biggest differences between last season and this offseason.
Why This Competition Matters
Some fans won’t think much about the kicker competition until someone misses a game-winning field goal.
Good football teams pay attention to the little things, and having a reliable kicker can be the difference between making the playoffs and watching from home. If the Giants are going to play the physical, disciplined brand of football John Harbaugh wants, they need stability on special teams. That’s why this competition is worth following throughout training camp and the preseason.
My Take
As we wait for training camp to begin, I think Dominic Zvada is the favorite to win the kicking job. Of course, nothing is guaranteed. One bad preseason game or a hot streak from Ben Sauls could change the conversation quickly. Still, if I had to make my prediction today, I’d expect Dominic Zvada to be kicking for the New York Giants when they open the regular season.
