Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants episode four recap.

Episode 4 of Hard Knocks focused heavily on the New York Giants’ offseason preparations for the 2024 NFL Draft. Let’s dive into the 3 main takeaways.

Giants Consider Draft Day Trade: Reflections on a Familiar Dilemma

As the 2024 NFL Draft approached, the New York Giants considered trading up with the New England Patriots to select North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye at No. 3. Co-owner John Mara couldn’t help but recall the 2004 draft day trade for Eli Manning.

“We’re in a great position. I’m just nervous about giving away too much… very similar to 20 years ago,” Mara said to assistant GM Brandon Brown two weeks before the draft.

Despite knowing that Jayden Daniels would be off the board, the Giants hoped to land Maye. However, GM Joe Schoen emphasized to Mara that they wouldn’t pursue the trade if the Patriots’ asking price was too steep.

“I think we’re in striking distance, so we should take a chance,” Schoen said. “If you’ve got a chance to get a top three in the draft, the hit rate is way better. But if it requires a blockbuster deal, we’ll stick with Daniel Jones and continue building around him.”

Schoen Reassures Daniel Jones Amid Giants’ QB Market Exploration

At the start of Episode 4, GM Joe Schoen was upfront with Daniel Jones about the Giants exploring the quarterback market. Schoen reassured Jones that their interest in other quarterbacks didn’t reflect a lack of confidence in him. Instead, it was due to Jones missing 17 games over the past two years due to a neck injury and an ACL tear.

“We didn’t play our best football in the first six games before you got injured,” Schoen explained. “We’re exploring all options, but it doesn’t mean we’re taking a quarterback. We still believe in you. My job is to do what’s best for the organization, so we have to consider all possibilities. This doesn’t mean we’ve given up on you, and it doesn’t guarantee we’ll draft someone else.”

Schoen admitted that the uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position had left him feeling unsettled, emphasizing the importance of having a reliable player in that role.

Malik Nabers. Be there, please.

When the Giants realized they couldn’t draft their preferred quarterback, they shifted focus to securing the best available playmaker. The team seemed to rank the top wide receivers as follows.

The Giants’ top wide receiver choices were led by Malik Nabers, who was highly favored by wide receivers coach Mike Groh, even over Marvin Harrison Jr. Head coach Brian Daboll and GM Joe Schoen also had a strong preference for Nabers. Following Nabers, the team ranked Marvin Harrison Jr. as their second choice, with Rome Odunze coming in third.

“We have to get an offensive weapon,” Schoen told Director of Player Personnel Tim McDonnell. “I’d be thrilled with Nabers and even okay with Odunze. If we can get Marv or Nabers, we’re turning the card in.”
