Because of this famous draft, entire franchises changed their foundation. With the first pick, the San Diego Chargers selected Ole Miss product and younger brother of Peyton, Eli Manning. With the fourth pick in the draft, the New York Giants selected NC State product Phillip Rivers. Apparently disillusioned with the pick, Eli Manning was traded just minutes after being drafted. Giants GM Ernie Accorsi traded Rivers to the Chargers for Manning, as well as three picks (in which the Chargers drafted Kicker Nate Kaeding, Linebacker Shawne Merriman, and the other was traded to TB for Offensive Lineman Roman Oben). Ten years later, the glaring question still remains… Which team got the better end of the deal?

In terms of pure statistics, Manning’s completion percentage is lower, his passer rating is lower and he has thrown many more interceptions than Rivers. Rivers has been much more consistent throughout his career and had a significantly better season than Manning in 2013. But, we are not just judging statistics. As the great Vince Lombardi said, “winning is everything.”

Rivers is a good, maybe great, quarterback. Is it his fault that the Chargers have been nothing special the past few seasons? Probably not. However, his teams are 4-5 in the playoffs and that his passer rating dips from 95.6 to 79.2 in those nine games. In the playoffs, Manning has a record of 8-3, numerous fourth-quarter comebacks, the all-time record for most passing yards in a single postseason (1219 yards in 2011), a passer rating of 89, and, most notably, 2 Super Bowl MVP’s.

This is what separates Manning from Rivers. Manning’s knack for clutch plays allows him to thrive in big games, while Rivers crumbles under pressure. Rivers does have the edge numbers-wise during the regular season, but he does not have the postseason prowess or the championships that Manning has. It seems like Manning rises during the playoffs and Rivers sinks. Although the Chargers received other important pieces in the deal with the draft picks they acquired, it did not lead to rings. In a league where winning is everything, there is one stat that matters: since 2004 when these quarterbacks were drafted, the Giants have two Super Bowl victories, and the Chargers have none. Therefore, the Giants got the better end of the deal.

The post Eli Manning and Phillip Rivers: A Decade Later first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

 <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">1892</post-id>

Elite and Reliable

tmerritt51

New York Giants News

Believe In Eli

Derek Jeter

twitter

Elite and rEliable The NFL Draft is coming along with its annual…

The post Elite and Reliable first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

Elite and rEliable

The NFL Draft is coming along with its annual hope and anticipation that it brings for every team and their fan base. But I don’t talk about any team as far as I am concerned I talk about THE team, The New York Giants. It was ten years ago where I was there to witness the New York Giants draft the best quarterback in team history, Eli Manning.

Now recently it has been reported that Eli is having surgery on his ankle and it goes to show that maybe one day he could be injured or maybe he won’t be the lifetime QB for the Giants. Should the Giants look for his eventual replacement or at least a plan B if the NFL’s active iron man does not continue the streak? Is Curits Painter the person you are confident in? (lol. Sorry I had to laugh at that one) Do you think they can develop Ryan Nassib? Or is that person not on the roster yet?

I ask you to not worry about what has not happened yet. We have no reason to believe that Eli will not be starting week 1 and every game next season. That assumption should be a big part of his legacy, which is what I want to explore/ celebrate because it is going on ten years of Eli, consistently showing up.

Eli Manning still to this day is as polarizing as he was back then when he was refusing to go to San Diego and seemed to just want to be a New York Giant from the start. He was not scared of the spotlight of New York and the scrutiny that he knows he would have to face. Eli has a quiet confidence, being a leader with his actions showing his teammates to not get too high or low with moments/mistakes on the field because focus and a full game’s effort is needed for a win, just follow him there.

Eli is the New York Giants all-time leader in all the passing stats that matter along with the major stat being Most Super bowl MVPs by a Giant. Along with the being the NFL’s active iron man at 162 starts and counting.

As great as all these accomplishments are, still Eli is not respected in the league like he should be (granted it is hard to make this argument after last year, it was just a bad year overall for the whole team). Eli was drafted with a solid QB class when 4 were taken in the first round (Phillip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger, J. P. Losman) and 3 are still in the league with Pro Bowl appearances while 2 have multiple Super Bowl wins (Eli, Ben) and Eli is the only one that has a Super Bowl MVP actually 2.

Even with this obvious evidence, what QB is better when you watch shows on any sports network such as ESPN it seems like the consensus is that Rivers and Roethlisberger are head and shoulders better. Now I admit with Big Ben there should be a comparison that is close but Eli has not had the off field baggage that Ben has had and lets be honest Ben was horrible in his first Super Bowl win.

Edge: Eli

Phillip Rivers was technically drafted by the Giants but was immediately traded to the Chargers for Eli (Giants also gave up the draft picks that ended up being Shawne Merriman and Nate Kaeding) and I would still take that trade all day since it meant 2 Super Bowl wins and counting for the Giants. Now this comparison is the one that frustrates me because I do not understand how Rivers always seems to get the edge over Eli when critics are talking even though there is nothing that backs that stance up other than some stats but stats can be manipulated. So I will try to state my argument.

They say Rivers is more accurate from stats I have seen its like 63 percent to Eli’s 58. Is that a huge difference and lets be honest how many of Rivers throws were to Tomilson, Sproles, and Gates over the years. If most of his throws were to those guys how long was he actually throwing the ball down the field? Eli takes chances we know that so his percentage will be lower and he passes mainly go to WRs that are down the field. I will use this poker analogy you can’t win what you don’t put in the middle.

Eli pushes everything into the middle sometimes it pays off 2 Super bowls and sometimes it doesn’t but he is trying. Rivers 0 Super bowl appearances and how many times were the Chargers the favorites to comes out of the AFC or at least in the top 3 since Rivers has been there. When the Giants won the Super bowls were they even favored to win the NFC East?

Edge: Eli (I don’t care what the stats say I am using the eye test)

This argument just gets me mad so I cut it short but any Rivers fans you are welcome to find me and debate me on twitter.

The point of this article is this, we as New York Giants Fans are lucky, Eli is our QB. Whether he is frustrating you by throwing an INT or he orchestrating another 4th quarter comeback, you know he will be playing and trying his best to win the game. That is all we can ask from him because I can careless about his stats there is only one thing that matters, who is getting the W.

Are there better QB’s in the league, of course there is, I can’t really argue that point. But Eli wanted to be a QB for the New York Giants from the start and hopefully all the way to the end. In that time span I know what I get from Eli (risk taker, winner, and will always show up), and I know what I won’t get (off field issues, me first player, and taking off plays).

This season seems to be shaping up for Eli to show the critics why he was the 1 overall pick ten years ago and that day ten years ago will be celebrated by me because I am not looking forward to the day that Eli stops showing up.

The post Elite and Reliable first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

 <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">1880</post-id>

Why Extending Eli’s Contract Might Not Be In The Big Blue Plans

James Doino

New York Giants News

Derek Jeter

Hakeem Nicks

Hard Knocks

Why Extending Eli’s Contract Might Not Be In The Big Blue Plans…

The post Why Extending Eli’s Contract Might Not Be In The Big Blue Plans first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

Why Extending Eli’s Contract Might Not Be In The Big Blue Plans

Who is Russ Lande?…And what is his significance in regards to this article?

(South Orange, New Jersey, USA) is Sporting News’ NFL Draft Expert, Former NFL Scout & Front Office Executive. I’ve been reading Russ for years now, and his in depth analysis is more than not, spot on.

Well James, what does Russ Lande have to do with the Giants extending Eli Manning’s contract?

Absolutely, positively, nothing. However, a Easter egg that Russ dropped recently, a Easter egg that went unnoticed by most Giants fans could be the clue to the future of our NY Giants. But we will get to that quote in a minute, let us first examine some other things in reference to Easy E.

Change isn’t constant: “I definitely don’t want change and think he’s a terrific offensive coordinator. Kevin has been my quarterback coach from Day One and my offensive coordinator. It’s been a lot of his offensive stuff from Day One.” That is how Eli felt about getting rid of Kevin Gilbride. Whether you want to call him delusional or loyal, I will leave that to you. It does however provide of glimpse inside Eli’s thinking.

Change is coming: Enter new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo. While Coach Coughlin has said a lot of the offense will remain the same, there are sure to be some wrinkles provided by McAdoo. If not, then why even hire the guy? Can Manning handle the changes? It is easy for us to say yes he can, but that answer may be a bit naive as well. How do we know not only that Eli can accept the changes, but that he can thrive in a new offense? Eli’s game is throwing the ball down the field, chunks of yardage, that is not McAdoo’s vision. McAdoo will bring short passes, screens and that change will not only require the WR’s, RB’s and O-Line to adapt, but Eli as well.

Is he 33 already?: Yes he is, and there is no fountain of youth in the swamps of Jersey. The 49ers once said good-bye to Joe Montana. The Colts waved good-bye to Peyton. The Packers jettisoned Brett Favre. For us to sit here as Giants fans and blindly just say Eli is here for the duration of his career is ignorant and small sighted. Extending Eli now for 17-20 million a season til he is in his late 30’s or early 40’s is, well, not very smart. That’s a good way to cripple our salary cap figure for the next 5-6 season. Even with the salary cap going up over the next handful of years being fiscally responsible is imperative to keeping the NYG brand competitive for years to come.

Now if you read the Big BluePrint on BleedBigBlue.com you read how I thought the Giants should extend Eli now. So why am I being hippocratic now? Enter Russ Lande…Russ was quoted by Ian O’Connor, a columnist for ESPNNY.com during the NFL combine…

“This week, I had a higher up in NFL tell me none of this year’s QB’s are as good as (Ryan) Nassib” – from Russ Lande via Ian O’Connor.

Wow!…Can that be true? You all know the hard on I have for Johnny Manziel, so reading this quote got me thinking. What if the Giants know something we don’t? What if Nassib is a gem? What if Nassib is our Aaron Rodgers?

I was screaming for Nassib to get some run last season after we had nothing to play for. #PlayNassib. But what if Big Blue brass said we don’t want Nassib playing with this offensive line and the rest of the fuck ups we had out there last season. What if Nassib is the future?

I was also screaming at the top of my lungs that Nassib should have been playing last year, much like Kirk Cousins, to be put on display to possibly trade him for some picks. But what if the Giants simply don’t want to trade him because they see the future in this kid? And what does that mean to Eli?

Eli is 33 years old with 2 years and a shit load of money left on his contract. A new offensive coordinator who is only 3 years his senior is in town, with rumors everywhere that he might be Coughlin’s successor. And a much less expensive 4th round pick named Ryan Nassib waiting in the wings.

From what I have read and learned about Nassib, he seems to be a better fit for McAdoo’s timing offense then Eli does.

“I told you I’ve known this kid since high school. I am so happy for this kid. He’s a passionate kid with an edge. He’s got some footwork issues, but if you want to talk about a kid with an edge to him who will make his teammates better, this is the kid. He’s a tough kid. He lives in the weight room.”…”Thick-bodied arm talent who can distribute the ball at every level. Plus velocity when balanced and clean in his footwork. Strong, quick release, gets the ball out in a hurry on hitches and slants. Accurate to all parts of the field when in rhythm. Comes off initial read, can look off safety to come to the opposite side of the field. Willing to shovel the ball or make a last-ditch throw to make a play instead of taking a sack. Displays the ability to step up within applies enhancers: who this know.
the pocket or move to either side to create space to throw. Flashes air, touch, and accuracy on fades in the end zone. Puts a lot of air under deep balls, giving his man a chance to make a play. Sells play action and screens well. Places the ball on the run, especially to his right. Competitive player who directs his teammates well and does not give up on any game. Tough enough to take big hits, bull for a first down with his feet.” Mike Mayock

“The Syracuse star is the best combination of present capability and future potential of all the quarterbacks in the draft. He clearly has the required skills to play quarterback in the NFL – and very well. Nassib more than capably ran an NFL offense at Syracuse, posting great statistics as a senior, including a 62.4% completion percentage. I believe Nassib has plenty of room for growth. Syracuse didn’t run a full NFL offense, keeping the passing offense mostly in the horizontal timing range, though Nassib’s arm strength is clearly strong enough to throw more vertical combinations. That’s where Nassib’s growth potential lies…..Nassib is the type of quarterback teams – the players – want. He’s a guy teams are going to respect. He plays tough and not like a quarterback in a skirt. And he’s the type of quarterback that can put the team on his shoulders and carry them to wins. While he many not be the most physically imposing quarterback in the draft with the highest ceiling, there’s enough for me to think he’ll eventually be this draft’s best quarterback.” Jason Piere of SB Nation

Is it at all possible that the Giants are more than happy to give Eli until the end of his current contract and move on with a 38 year old head coach named Bob McAdoo and a young QB named Ryan Nassib? Similar to the changing of the guard that took place in Green Bay a couple of years ago?

We all sit here and speculate, we predict and argue with each other, and there is nothing wrong with that, that is what fans do. But sometimes, behind the walls of your favorite team, they have a plan that doesn’t reveal itself for years. It needs room to grow and mature so it can be moved into the spotlight.

We’ve sat here for months debating Eli’s cap number and his contract extension, his past accomplishments. And we’ve made predictions for his future, some good, some bad. But none of us know for sure the thinking going on in the front office. We can speculate and argue til we are Big Blue in the face, but sooner rather then later the Giants will have to extend, release or trade our two time Super Bowl MVP…it’s inevitable, and it’s approaching quickly.

Russ Lande said “This week, I had a higher up in NFL tell me none of this year’s QB’s are as good as (Ryan) Nassib” …What if Eli isn’t as good as Nassib either, and the Giants know it.

Maybe Nassib wasn’t thrown into the fire because they didn’t want the kid shell shocked or ending up getting murdered behind that line. I mean, was there really any reason for Curtis Painter to be in uniform at all?…It didn’t make sense at the time, but after reading that quote from Russ, it makes more sense now.

The Giants decisions about Eli, whether to extend him or not, could come down to the development of a 4th round pick who ran the Saints offense in Syracuse with now Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone, and if the kid can play, how long do wait? Aaron Rodgers sat on the pine for 4 years before he got his chance to play. Did that help Rodgers or did the Packers cost themselves by waiting to long to hand over the keys to the NKOTB?…

Eli can not play QB forever, and hopefully the Giants stole the future in the 4th round last year…only time will tell.

Steve Young replaced Broadway Joe. Andrew Luck replaced Peyton. Aaron Rodgers replaced that Brett Faar-vra guy. Someone someday is going to replace Eli Manning, the only questions are who?…and when?

Do you think the Giants might be setting up a situation where Ryan Nassib takes over for Eli Manning?…Would you extend Eli? I do not love seeing him get the ever-loving shit beat out him for no good reason at all.

Secondly, I believe the Giants should give Eli an extension (as long as it makes sense financially) that will make Eli a Giant until he takes his last snap from under center.

Third, Eli should be benched for the last 3 games of the season.

PLAY

NASSIB …Not cause Eli should be benched, but so Eli doesn’t get killed. Where is the Wu-Tang Clan when you need them? Hey Eli, Protect Ya Neck…

I don’t want to hear he needs time with his wide outs, or you don’t bench him cause he’s a Super Bowl MVP or Coughlin saying this is our team, none of it. Enough. We sound ridiculous.

Eli is getting killed out there. He looks like the QB from the movie “Necessary Roughness” running around after the snap yelling “Blow

the whistle, blow the whistle.” The shots he is taking are coming from the front side, up the middle and the blind side. He got hit once in San Diego from the blind side and I do not have a clue how he got up. He is one tough son of a bitch.

He has all off-season and pre-season to work with the wide receivers. I’d rather him be healthy.

But he’s a 2 time Super Bowl MVP James. Yeah I know, and that is exactly why he is too valuable to be left in these games with receivers who are making him hold onto the ball to long due to running the wrong routes and because this offensive line is tragic.

PLAY NASSIB —

Coughlin will say…”There is not much we can do, our team is our team.”

And I reply Bullshit!!! Yes this is your team this year, but it will not be the same “not ready for primetime players” that have shamed the Giants uniforms all season long.

Maybe benching Eli sends a message throughout the locker room. Maybe it says we are beginning the process of evaluating every position for next year. Shape up or get out. Maybe benching Eli makes those lineman look at each other and say “Wow, we must be bad if they benched the franchise QB cause we are inept in all areas and going to get him killed.”

But what about his consecutive game streak? That is a nice story for individual players. The Giants as a franchise can not worry about trivial things like streaks and individual achievements. We have an entire team to rebuild.

How does playing Nassib help us rebuild James? Because in order to rebuild you need picks in the draft. Is trading Nassib a definite if he plays for the last 3 games?…No. What is definite is you don’t know what you would get for him without playing him.

Look what is going on in Washington….Yes they benched RGKnee because of all his bullshit and him being a diva and all of the above…but check out this quote from Shanahan…

On what will happen moving into the offseason if Kirk Cousins plays well in the next three games:

“Well that’s the problem that you want to have. You want to have everybody playing good. We made a decision a long time ago that Robert is our quarterback. He’s our quarterback of the future. We made this decision based on what we think is best for him and it could be the best for our organization. If he (Kirk Cousins) lights it up, we’ve got a lot of options with Kirk. I hope that’s what happens.”

#Foresight #PlayNassib #EliProtectYaNeck

Eli is our QB, most likely for another 6 or 7 seasons. He has been healthy for his whole career, he is the face of franchise, and throwing him out there when he has been pummeled all year-long, in my eyes, is irresponsible.

Eli should be a Giant for life. Nassib most likely is not.

Eli has been sacked more times through 14 games this season than any other entire season in his career. Hold on read that again…Eli has been sacked more times through 14 games this season than any other entire season in his career. Let that sink in…then realize he has Seattle and Detroit coming up, and both teams are playing for something and will go after him with all they have. Someone, please, blind fold me.

This season has been the ugliest one I can remember in all my years as a Giants fan…and it could get worse.

Mark my words and you heard it here first. Kirk Cousins is going to be trading for picks. Teams are desperate for QB’s with potential that don’t cost a lot of money. The Redskins for all their woes recognize that, and they are doing their best to put Cousins on display for the league to see. They need players, not back up QB’s and the Redskins like the Giants have their QB for the next 5-10 years in place. But RGKnee needs help…So does Eli.

Would you rather an extra 2nd ,3rd or 4th round pick next year?…Or Nassib on your bench?

Desperate times call for desperate measures…some times being to full of pride can hurt more than help. Coughlin and Reese should recognize that, and instead of making excuses for not playing Nassib they should move heaven and earth to make sure it does happen, with the future of Eli and the Giants in mind.

The Seahawks and the Lions… Someone get Eli a suit of armor.

Hey Eli Protect Ya Neck!!!

The post Hey Eli Protect Ya Neck!!! first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

 <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">1498</post-id>

New York Giants Desperation Mode

Guest Blogger

Manning Bowl

Believe In Eli

Derek Jeter

Peyton Manning

New York Giants Desperation Mode What type of desperation mode should the…

The post New York Giants Desperation Mode first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

New York Giants Desperation Mode

What type of desperation mode should the Giants be in? Starting 0-3 for the first time in Coughlin’s NY coaching career, which means most of these players have never been in a hole like this… Except Myers, he was on the Raiders.

Kansas City, with Alex Smith and the Walrus at the helm, have started 3-0 for the first time in who knows how many years. In the preseason, when the schedules were released, I’m sure Giants fans were happy to mark this one down as a W and to put Andy Reid into place. It’s not looking so hot right now.

The only thing I can say about the Giants is that the have to fire their O Line and D Line coaches. It is absolutely miserable to watch the big men play in blue. Zero pressure in opposing QB’s, fewer sacks by our whole team then some individual players have. Eli is munching dirt the entire game. It’s disgusting. If the big men don’t show up, the games will continue to get ugly early and often. And Eli, holy hell he looks awful, when you have more picks than td’s you know it’s a bad season.

Let’s hope the Giants can put a stop to this madness, give KC their first L and get Big Blue’s first W. Otherwise it might just be downhill from here.

The post New York Giants Desperation Mode first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

 <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">1020</post-id>

New York’s elite athletes.

Marco Ceo

Uncategorized

Carmelo Anthony

Derek Jeter

Eli Manning

Elite

How do you rank New York’s Elite Athletes. Nobody disliked him more than his own Big Blue fans. It’s well known across all sports that New York is one of the hardest places to play. No player is under more media scrutiny and more fan pressure than a New York athlete. But 12 months ago, Eli had already won a Super Bowl against the undefeated New England Patriots and Giants fans still wouldn’t give the guy a break.

3 years earlier, Eli Manning played the greatest game of his life. A year after watching his beloved brother win his first Super Bowl with the Colts, poor Eli was up against the undefeated Patriots. Everyone thought this would be a blood bath. People were planning on a repeat of Super Bowl XXXV, where the Giants were shellacked by the Baltimore Ravens 34-7.
Eli looked like Phil Simms during that post-season. He was accurate, decisive, explosive. In that Super Bowl, Eli went 19 for 34 and threw 2 touchdowns and a pick. All of a sudden, there’s a lot of #10 jerseys walking around New York. A lot of Giants fans were saying things like “I didn’t think he had it in him” or “he sold his soul for that Super Bowl ring”. Everyone seemed content to pat Eli on the back and tussle his hair. Way to go kid.

But why wasn’t he basking in the glory his brother had enjoyed the previous year? Why was the conversation still all about Peyton, Tom and Drew? Eli Manning had just won a Super Bowl, so why was he still hocking watches like the guys on 42nd street while the Holy Trinity were out there on Gatorade commercials or selling underwear or luxury cars?
Eli is a mouth-breather. He has vacant eyes. He always looks lost, dumfounded and confused. He’s got the personality of a wet rag. But he’s got two rings. When he threw a fuss about being drafted by the Chargers and got himself traded to the Giants, I know a ton of Giants fans that were unhappy about that. “If it weren’t for his brother, or if it weren’t for his dad…” “Who does he think he is?” A year after he won his first Super Bowl, it was a fluke of genius – that for the post season he played completely out of character for himself. Two years after he won his first Super Bowl, it’s “he’ll never be like that again.” Three years later, when he was getting all of his passes deflected for interceptions, “he’s a bum!”

Now? “Oh, Eli Manning! He’s the best playoff quarterback of the last 5 years!” I love asking Giants fans about Eli Manning nowadays. You can almost see the crow feathers. Whenever I ask a Giants fan about Eli, there’s always a smirk, like they’re thinking about all of those disparaging things that have been said about poor old Eli over the years. Eli’s only real problem is his inconsistency. He shines in the post season, but his irregular play through 16 games can prevent him from getting there, where can he can silence his naysayers. Even if they’re the ones wearing his jersey.

The post You cant spell elite first appeared on Bleedbigblue.com.

 <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">31</post-id>
