New York Giants Head Coach Brian Daboll Takes Control of Play Calling for 2024 Season
Head coach Brian Daboll has officially confirmed that he will be calling the plays for the Giants this year. No surprise to those closely following the team.
This decision, however, comes with some concerns.
Daboll’s Strength as a Play Caller.
Daboll hasn’t called plays since becoming the Giants’ head coach, but he has plenty of experience from his time as the Bills’ offensive coordinator. His play-calling skills were a key factor in Buffalo’s offensive success.
Last season, Daboll stepped in at times to take over play calling from Mike Kafka, who was debuting as an offensive coordinator in 2022. While some may see this as undermining Kafka, Daboll’s experience gives him confidence in making this move.
The Risk of the Decision
The Giants’ offense regressed last year, raising questions about whether Daboll’s decision will turn things around. Some blame key injuries, while others cite poor quarterback and offensive line play.
In the offseason, Daboll blocked Kafka from interviewing for Seattle’s play-calling offensive coordinator job. While Kafka is staying, he won’t be calling the plays in 2024. Daboll essentially forced him to remain in East Rutherford — only to demote him.
The NFL is a tough, cold business, but this is Daboll’s team. He has the right to run his offense as he sees fit, as long as the Giants choose to keep him.
