Giants Fall to Commanders 27-22: What’s Next?

by Marco Ceo

The New York Giants have suffered their fourth straight loss, falling to the Washington Commanders 27-22 at MetLife Stadium. This defeat drops the Giants to 2-7, leaving fans wondering what the rest of the season holds.

Commanders Sweep Giants in 2024 Season Series

The Commanders are no longer the easy win on the schedule. With a 7-2 record and a commanding lead in the NFC East, the Commanders completed the season sweep of the Giants. This marks a troubling trend as the Giants struggle to find their footing.

Offensive Performance.

Daniel Jones Shows Improvement in the Second Half.

Quarterback Daniel Jones had a stronger second half, completing 16 of 20 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Jones even ended his touchdown drought at MetLife Stadium, a streak that had lasted since Week 17 of 2022. Using his mobility, Jones also showcased his toughness by breaking through defenders for a rushing touchdown. While a potential third touchdown was nullified due to a questionable pass interference call on Darius Slayton, Jones displayed resilience in his efforts.

Tyrone Tracy’s Contribution and Theo Johnson’s Redemption.

Running back Tyrone Tracy contributed in the first half with 50 rushing yards but saw limited action in the second half, adding only 16 more yards as the Giants shifted to a pass-heavy approach. Tight end Theo Johnson struggled early but redeemed himself with a touchdown catch that brought the Giants closer at 27-22. With his 6’6” frame, Johnson’s potential for making big plays should be utilized more often.

Defensive Struggles.

Pass Rush Falls Short.

The Giants’ top-ranked pass rush failed to sack Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels. The defense couldn’t make stops on crucial third downs, allowing Daniels to keep the Commanders’ offense on the field. Without pressuring the quarterback, the Giants’ defense left themselves vulnerable and paid the price.

Special Teams and Looking Ahead.

The Giants’ decision to go for two points on touchdown drives may have cost them. The game wasn’t out of reach, and missing those extra points left the Giants in a hole they struggled to escape. With a 0-5 home record and the trade deadline looming, questions arise about potential roster moves. Will the Giants look to trade key players like Darius Slayton or Azeez Ojulari?

What’s Next?

The Giants’ final game before the bye week will be in Germany against the Panthers. Can they pull off a win? At this point, the outcome is uncertain, but the team desperately needs a change in momentum.
