Giants second-year quarterback performs well over backups at minicamp

The New York Giants got a pleasant reminder that they have as good a QB3 as there is in the NFL during day one of minicamp on Tuesday.

Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito completed 12-16 passes in the team’s first mandatory spring run-through, Ed Valentine of Big Blue View shared. Though it’s in the lead-up to the season, the second-year passer took care of the football and hit his targets, showing that his wheels are well-greased after six months off.

Giants: Tommy DeVito’s 2023 midseason tear hasn’t been enough to garner QB1 or 2 roles

The 25-year-old completed 64 percent of his passes for 1,101 passing yards and eight passing touchdowns in nine games, six of which he started last year. Though he won NFC Offensive Player of the Week once and shone as a Rookie of the Year candidate, that wasn’t enough to earn him the QB1 nod for the upcoming NFL campaign.

Daniel Jones was named the Giants’ starter once again for the 2024 season. New York’s marquee offseason acquisition Drew Lock is listed as their QB2, though a series of reports last winter and this spring of the former Seattle Seahawks talent having a chance to unseat Jones for the starting gig have him primed to step into that role at the first sign of trouble.

DeVito could be useful as a reserve QB for the Giants in 2024

No matter, DeVito has a good claim to see time at some point in the year. He could be useful and effective in a level similar to Taysom Hill’s spot play for the New Orleans Saints behind Drew Brees in 2018 as a dual-threat sparkplug that can jolt the Giants’ offense during cold stretches. While Giants head coach Brian Daboll has not expressed that the New Jersey native would have a set role like that, anything could be possible for a Giants offense that has a couple of committees brewing.

New York will conclude minicamp on Thursday, June 13. This gives DeVito one more opportunity to show off his arm before the team starts preparing for preseason later this summer. His play could also dictate whether or not the Giants opt to use him as a trade piece.
