Daboll Sees Positives Despite Jones’ Two Interceptions
New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones made his preseason debut on Saturday against the Houston Texans, his first game back since tearing his ACL in Week 9 of the 2023 season. While the game didn’t go as planned, with Jones throwing two interceptions, Giants head coach Brian Daboll remains optimistic about the quarterback’s performance.
Daboll acknowledged the interceptions but pointed out that Jones showed promise in his first game back. “I thought there were two plays we’d like to have back. But I thought he played fast,” Daboll said. The coach emphasized that live game reps were crucial for Jones, especially after such a long recovery. “This was good for him to get out there and get some live reps with a rush and the ability to get hit. He had that scramble. But I’d say he operated well in the pocket,” Daboll added.
Regarding the interceptions, Daboll provided a detailed breakdown. The first, a pick-6, came on a play the Giants would all like to forget. “Obviously, the backed-up play, we’ve talked about that one. We’d all like to have that one back,” Daboll admitted. For the second interception, a deep ball intended for rookie Jalin Hyatt, Daboll noted the need for better execution: “It’s a one-on-one throw down the sideline. Got to do a good job of saving some space and giving him an opportunity.”
Despite the turnovers, Daboll saw many positives in Jones’ overall performance. “I thought he made a lot of good decisions as the game went on. Made some nice throws and the guys created some separation,” Daboll concluded. For Jones, the game was a critical step in his return, and Daboll believes it sets a foundation for improvement moving forward.
