Don Chandler Named 73rd on Giants Top 100 Players List
The New York Giants recently honored Don Chandler as one of the top 100 players in franchise history, ranking him 73rd. Chandler’s legacy is well-known, as his career shaped both the Giants and the Green Bay Packers.
The Start of Chandler’s Giants Career.
Chandler almost didn’t make the Giants’ roster in 1956. He was ready to leave training camp alongside future Hall of Famer Sam Huff. Both rookies were unsure of their future in football. However, Vince Lombardi, then the Giants’ offensive coordinator, intervened. Lombardi famously told Chandler, “You may not make this ball club, but you’re sure as hell not quitting on me.” Chandler stayed and played a critical role in the Giants’ success.
Chandler’s Giants Contributions.
In 1956, Chandler punted for the Giants and helped them secure an Eastern Conference title. Over 112 games, he accumulated 23,019 yards on 525 punts. Only Dave Jennings and Sean Landeta have punted more for the team. After Pat Summerall retired in 1961, Chandler became the Giants’ placekicker.
A New Chapter with the Packers.
In 1965, Chandler was traded to the Green Bay Packers. He reunited with Lombardi and helped the Packers win three consecutive NFL championships, including the first two Super Bowls. Chandler’s contributions to both the Giants and Packers remain legendary, earning him a spot on the 1960s All-Decade Team.
