Giants Claim Safety Anthony Johnson: Schoen Explains Waiver

by Marco Ceo

New York Giants Secure Anthony Johnson on Waivers

The New York Giants were awarded one player, safety Anthony Johnson, off waivers on Wednesday. General Manager Joe Schoen confirmed that Johnson was the only player the Giants claimed, despite the potential to add more players.

Why Only One Claim?

During a Wednesday evening press conference, Schoen addressed why the Giants did not pursue more players. He explained, “Sometimes it’s fantasy football. People aren’t cutting good football players. You’re not going to put in 15 claims across the league that are going to change your roster.”

Schoen highlighted that most players available on waivers are typically depth players. “A lot of times it’s depth players that can come in and, again, get you through a season, or a depth safety if an injury occurs and they have to go start,” he said.

Underwhelming Waiver Period

Despite prior indications that the Giants would be aggressive during the waiver process, this period proved to be underwhelming. Schoen emphasized that finding impact players on waivers is rare, but it can happen. “History says you can find some good football players during this time. Again, we’re pretty thorough in our process in identifying who may or may not help us,” Schoen explained. He also noted that claiming a player means cutting another, which can affect the position room. Therefore, the Giants were strategic in their approach, choosing only to claim Johnson.

In summary, the Giants’ waiver wire activity fell short of expectations, with the team opting for a calculated approach, securing just one player while preserving the integrity of their current lineup.
