Giants Kick Off Preseason with Promising 14-3 Win Over Lions.

The New York Giants opened their 2024 preseason with a 14-3 victory over the Detroit Lions, last season’s NFC runner-up, on a rainy Thursday night at MetLife Stadium. Despite the challenging weather, the game offered plenty for Giants fans to feel hopeful and provided some highlights.

Both teams rested the majority of their starters, which led to a low-scoring affair. However, the Giants’ new running back committee and young secondary provided encouraging performances.

Game Highlights:

Running Game: The Giants, utilizing their new running back committee, rushed for an impressive 155 yards, averaging 5.7 yards per carry. Eric Gray was the standout, running four times for 52 yards and scoring both of the Giants’ touchdowns. He also caught all four passes thrown his way for an additional 46 yards. Dante Miller, another running back, showed off his speed with 63 yards on 12 carries.

Defense: The Giants’ defense was stout, holding the Lions to just 110 passing yards and six first downs. The young secondary, in particular, impressed by limiting Detroit’s longest reception to 26 yards, which came late in the game. The Giants also excelled in crucial situations, holding the Lions on all four fourth-down attempts and preventing them from scoring in the red zone (0-3) and goal-to-go situations (0-2).

Defensive Standouts: Dyontae Johnson had an active night before leaving with a bruised ankle in the third quarter. He recorded four tackles, including two for a loss and a sack. Defensive end Boogie Basham contributed with four tackles, a sack, and two passes defensed, showcasing his versatility on the line.

Quarterback Play: Tommy DeVito took over at quarterback after Drew Lock exited with a hip injury late in the first quarter. DeVito managed two scoring drives and played nearly error-free football, demonstrating poise in his preseason debut for 2024.

Injuries:

  • Drew Lock left the game after injuring his hip, completing 4-of-10 passes for 17 yards and an interception. General Manager Joe Schoen later assured fans that Lock was fine and could have returned if necessary.
  • Defensive lineman Ryder Anderson left in the second half to get X-rays on his hand/wrist after being evaluated on the sideline.
  • Dyontae Johnson, after bruising his ankle, was briefly sidelined but returned to the field after receiving treatment.

This preseason opener was a positive step for the Giants, particularly in evaluating the depth of their roster. As the preseason continues, the performances of players like Eric Gray, Tommy DeVito, and Tre Hawkins will be crucial in shaping the team’s lineup for the regular season. Fans can look forward to seeing how these young players build on this strong start
