Jack Gregory Named 74th On Giants Top 100 Players List
The New York Giants have announced that Jack Gregory, a legendary defensive end, has been ranked 74th on their list of the top 100 players in franchise history. Gregory, who played for the Giants in the 1970s, was a dominant force on the field.
Gregory’s Dominant Career with the Giants.
Gregory played 96 games for the Giants between 1972 and 1978. During this time, he was credited with 75.5 sacks. Although sacks were not an official stat until 1982, Gregory’s numbers remain impressive. In his first season with the Giants, he led the NFL with 21.0 sacks, earning a Pro Bowl selection and All-NFL honors.
A Legacy Built in the NFL and Beyond.
Before joining the Giants, Gregory played for the Cleveland Browns. The Giants traded a first-round draft pick to the Browns to acquire him in 1973. Gregory’s father, also named Jack, briefly played for the Browns in 1941. Gregory’s collegiate career began at the University of Tennessee–Chattanooga, where he was an honorable-mention All-America tight end. He later transferred to Delta State University, where he set a school record for receiving yards as a tight end and also played defensive end.
Jack Gregory’s legacy extends beyond his time with the Giants. He is unofficially credited with 103 career sacks, including one against Joe Namath in the first-ever Monday Night Football game in 1970. His contributions to the game were recognized in 2000 when he was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. The Giants’ decision to honor Gregory as one of their top 100 players solidifies his place in NFL history.
