Erich Barnes Named 86th On Giants Top 100 Players List.
The New York Giants have named Erich Barnes as the 86th best player in franchise history. His legacy as a Giant is undeniable, with his impact still felt today.
Barnes’ Time with the Giants.
Barnes played four seasons with the Giants, helping the team reach three NFL Championship Games. He earned Pro Bowl selections in each of those years, cementing his status as one of the best defensive backs of his era.
NFL Achievements.
Barnes had a remarkable 14-year NFL career, which included six Pro Bowl selections. In 1961, his first season with the Giants, he earned first-team All-Pro honors. He was also a second-team All-Pro in 1959, 1962, and 1964. Over his career, Barnes intercepted 45 passes, 18 of which came during his time with the Giants.
One of Barnes’ standout moments came on October 15, 1961. He set a franchise record with a 102-yard interception return for a touchdown. That season, he recorded seven interceptions, returning them for 195 yards.
Life After the Giants.
After the 1964 season, Barnes was traded to the Cleveland Browns. Interestingly, Barnes had grown up as a Browns fan in Elkhart, Indiana. He continued his career there, playing seven seasons with the team.
Barnes’ impact on football was recognized with inductions into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Purdue University Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.
