Energy Builds, Yet Giants Stick to Script on Draft

Eight Days Out, Schoen Sounds Familiar

We’re eight days away from the NFL Draft, and Joe Schoen is saying all the right things—again. The Giants GM held a pre draft press conference, and if you’ve heard one, you’ve heard them all. He’s polished, professional, and somehow manages to talk for 20 minutes without revealing much of anything.

Schoen says the Giants are “in a pretty good spot” and that they “have a process in place that we believe in.” That quote might sound familiar because it’s essentially a copy-and-paste from every other pre-draft media appearance he’s made since 2022.

Quarterback Talk… But No Urgency

Of course, the question came up—will the Giants draft a quarterback? Schoen’s answer: maybe. It’s “not mandatory,” thanks to the recent signings of Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston. He complimented the depth of the current class but made it clear they’ll only take one “if the board lines up.” In other words, the Giants won’t force it. Again, sounds familiar.

Leadership is important at the position, Schoen added. A quarterback needs to motivate and be the “face of the franchise.” That’s one of the few direct quotes that might raise eyebrows—but it’s still vague enough to apply to half the QBs in this draft.

Draft Strategy? Keep Guessing

Schoen confirmed the team has gotten calls about trading up and down. He said they’ll be “open to all options” and are willing to “run out the shot clock” next Thursday. As usual, it sounds like the Giants are ready for anything… or at least they want everyone to think that.

There’s also been no decision yet on the fifth-year options for Kayvon Thibodeaux and Evan Neal. Schoen says that will come after the draft. As for Neal, he’s apparently motivated and having a strong offseason.

Notes on Prospects, But No Commitments

The team is holding a medical meeting on Penn State’s Abdul Carter, but Schoen doesn’t expect any red flags. Meanwhile, Heisman winner Travis Hunter drew some attention for his rare ability to play both ways. Schoen praised his mindset and said the team wouldn’t hesitate to use him on offense and defense—if they pick him.

A Masterclass in Saying Nothing

If there’s one thing Schoen has mastered, it’s the art of the non-answer. His press conferences are full of cautious optimism and well-rehearsed generalities. It’s smart, strategic, and—let’s be honest—kind of boring.

He says all the right things, but don’t expect any real hints until Roger Goodell steps to the podium.
