Veteran WR Released to Make Room on 90-Man Roster.
After signing 13 undrafted rookie free agents this week, the Giants were forced to release one more player on Friday to stay within the 90-man offseason roster limit. The team chose to part ways with wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey.
While the move raised some eyebrows initially, it’s less surprising when looking at the bigger picture. The timing may have been unexpected, but Humphrey faced long odds of making the final 53-man roster.
Humphrey’s Exit Reflects WR Room Crowding.
The 26-year-old wideout was signed in March to a one-year deal worth $1.245 million. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 225 pounds, Humphrey brought size and veteran experience to the group. Last season, he logged 31 catches for 293 yards and one touchdown with the Denver Broncos. Over six seasons, he’s totaled 62 career receptions across stints with the Broncos, Patriots, and Saints.
Despite not drafting any wide receivers in April, the Giants added five undrafted rookie wideouts: Jordan Bly, Antwane Wells, Dalen Cambre, Beaux Collins, and Da’Quan Felton. Their arrival created a numbers crunch at the position and ultimately cost Humphrey his spot.
Rookie Minicamp Underway in East Rutherford.
The timing of Humphrey’s release coincides with the start of rookie minicamp. Friday marked the first on-field session, with the final practice scheduled for Saturday.
With a crowded receiver room and a focus on youth, the Giants are clearly prioritizing competition and upside as they shape their 2024 roster.
Stay tuned for more minicamp updates and roster developments as the offseason continues.
