Giants Receive Third and Sixth-Round Picks in Exchange for Toney
The New York Giants announced on Thursday that they have traded wide receiver Kadarius Toney, their 2021 first-round pick, to the Kansas City Chiefs. This trade is pending Toney passing his physical with the Chiefs. In return, the Giants will receive Kansas City’s compensatory third-round pick and their original sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
The third-round pick that the New York Giants will acquire was awarded to the Chiefs as a compensatory selection. This pick came after the Chicago Bears hired Ryan Poles as their general manager. Poles was previously the Chiefs’ executive director of player personnel, which led to the compensatory draft pick.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll commented on the trade, stating, “We just thought it was for the best of the team and wish Kadarius well.”
The Giants originally selected Toney 21st overall in the 2021 NFL Draft after trading down with the Chicago Bears. In that trade, the Giants moved back from the 11th overall pick to 20th, where they selected Toney. Additionally, the Giants received the Bears’ fifth-round pick (No. 164) in the 2021 draft, along with first and fourth-round picks in the 2022 draft. Those 2022 picks turned into the seventh overall and 112th overall selections.
This move signals the Giants’ focus on building for the future, as they continue to reshape the team under the leadership of Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen. The additional draft capital will help the Giants add more talent to their roster in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft.
