The New York Giants recently announced their list of the Top 100 players in franchise history. John Mendenhall, a dominant defensive tackle from the 1970s, earned the 77th spot.

Mendenhall’s Impact on the Giants’ Defense.

Mendenhall was a force to be reckoned with during his eight seasons with the Giants. Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 255 pounds, he was drafted in the third round in 1972 out of Grambling. He made an immediate impact, starting all 14 games in his rookie season and earning a spot on the All-NFL Rookie Team.

During his time with the Giants, Mendenhall was known for his exceptional run defense and his ability to rush the passer. He played in 101 games, starting 99 of them. His toughness and determination on the field set him apart from his peers. Teammate George Martin, who joined the Giants in 1975, credited Mendenhall with helping him transition into the league. Mendenhall’s influence extended beyond his play; he was a mentor and a leader on and off the field.

Mendenhall’s Legacy.

Mendenhall was part of a formidable Giants defense that included greats like Harry Carson, Brad Van Pelt, and Brian Kelley. He teamed up with Martin to create a strong defensive front that was known for its tenacity. Mendenhall’s impact on the Giants is still felt today, and his place among the Top 100 Giants players is well-deserved.
